The in situ grazing rate and nutritional condition of copepods were studied during October/November 1985, by analyzing gut fluorescence (feeding), body size and lipid composition (nutritional state), and electron transport system (ETS) activity (respiration rate) of copepods from surface-and deep-water in Kosterfjorden on the Swedish west coast. These parameters were related to the physical and biological environment, as defined by light, hydrography, autotrophic and bacterial production and seston in the water column. The results show a gradual build-up of the autumn phytoplankton bloom in the uppermost meters, with a peak in total autotrophic production in mid October of ca 550 mg C m–2 d–1, and a bacterial net production corresponding to 15% of this. Phytoplankton exudates made up, on average, 47% of the primary production and more than 50% of this was utilized by the bacteria. Copepods occurring in the surface-water exhibited grazing rates corresponding to between 11 and 18% of their body C d–1 and potential growth rates of 0 to 9% d–1. Copepod populations in the surface water were composed of individuals with higher average body-weight and lower lipid-proportion than those from the deep-water.Calanus finmarchicus in the deep-water showed characters indicating diapause condition, while this was not observed forAcartia clausi. Differences in lipid content and composition indicate thatC. finmarchicus, Pseudocalanus sp. andA. clausi represent three successive points on a scale of tolerance for fluctuations in the food environment. During the years 1982 to 1986, the life cycles and population dynamics of three scyphozoans, Aurelia aurita (L.), Cyanea capillata (L.) and C. lamarckii (Person and Lesueur), were studied in the Gullmar Fjord on the Swedish west coast. The settling of planulae, strobilation of scyphistomae and release of ephyrae were followed on ceramic settling plates in the laboratory and in the field. Weekly to bi-weekly hauls with Bongo nets were used to study the abundance of ephyrae and medusae. The results show great differences in the life cycles and ecology of the three species. A. aurita utilizes the best season for scyphistoma growth (August to September) and strobilates during the highest zooplankton abundance in October. C. capillata strobilates during the spring (March to May), and the abundance of C. capillata medusae is more dependent on immigration from the North Sea than A. aurita. C. lamarckii does not reproduce at all in the Gullmar Fjord and is totally dependent on immigration from the North Sea. The possibility of interspecific competition between A. aurita and C. capillata is discussed. A preliminary experiment showed that scyphistomae of A. aurita eat planula larvae of C. capillata during the autumn.  相似文献

The fate of chloroacetic acids (CAA) in forest soils was studied using radio-indicator methods. We showed that chloroacetic acids are both microbially degraded and simultaneously formed by chloroperoxidase-mediated chlorination of acetic and humic acids. The degree of biodegradation of chloroacetic acids in soil depends on their concentration. Dichloroacetic acid (DCA) is degraded faster than trichloroacetic acid (TCA). Chlorination of acetic acid led to a fast formation of dichloroacetic acid, whereas chlorination of humic acids gave rise to trichloroacetic acid. Both processes lead to a steady state in soil, participate in the chlorine cycle and possibly also in decomposition of organic matter in forest ecosystems.  相似文献

The Hamilton–Zuk hypothesis proposes that females prefer male secondary sexual traits because they are honest indicators of parasite resistance. Despite the attention that this hypothesis has received, its role in sexual selection remains equivocal. This study presents the first field test in guppies of two key predictions of the Hamilton–Zuk hypothesis: (1) that within populations, the most highly ornamented males have the fewest parasites and (2) that among populations, males in high parasite populations have the most conspicuous ornaments. Five hundred male guppies from 19 distinct populations in the Northern Range of Trinidad were inspected for Gyrodactylus parasites and photographed. Eight measures of orange spot ornamentation were used to test the predictions: hue, saturation, lightness, relative area, number, and area-weighted hue, saturation, and lightness. Parasite load had no significant effect on any of these measures. There was also no relationship between orange spot ornamentation and parasite abundance among populations. Guppies from high-predation environments had significantly more parasites, and their orange coloration was lighter and less saturated than that in guppies from low-predation environments. Despite previous lab results, this study found no relationship between parasite load and male orange spot ornamentation.  相似文献

Summary The contest behavior of larvae from a dense and a sparse population of the caddisfly Agrypnia pagetana was studied in the laboratory. Fights were generally of short duration, and most fights were won by owners in both populations. Take-over contests lasted longer than non-takeover ones, indicating that owners in general used a more persistent strategy. Ownership was more important in the sparse population than in the dense population, but contest duration did not differ between the two populations. Effect of weight asymmetry was most pronounced in the dense population, and here the larger larvae usually won. However, when the intruding larvae were much larger than the owner, a low number of take-over contests were probably related to the inferior fit (low resource value) of small cases to the intruding larvae. In both populations the frequency of case takeover contests was low when the case fit to the intruder was low. We conclude that A. pagetana larvae use fighting strategies typical for contests over resources of low value relative to contest costs.  相似文献

In intrasexual conflicts, contestants can rely on relative or absolute size of status badges to mediate aggressive behavior. Most studies focus on the response of focal animals to variation in status badges of their competitors; few have simultaneously considered the traits of both participants under experimental conditions. By simulating territorial intrusions, we tested the importance of two sexual traits [forehead patch size (FPS) and wing patch size (WPS)] in territorial behavior of males in a Hungarian population of the collared flycatcher, Ficedula albicollis. We presented a stimulus male to an unpaired resident male to examine whether the characteristics of the territory owner or those of the challenger were associated with the latency of the first attack of the owner, which is a good predictor of the territorial behavior in general. WPS of the stimulus male was a significant determinant of the latency of the first attack, as males with a larger WPS elicited quicker attacks from the residents than males with a small WPS. From the residents’ perspective, age appeared to influence their territorial behavior, as yearlings had shorter attack latencies than older males. Additionally, latency could be considered an individual-specific attribute because it varied consistently among males, even when the WPS of the stimulus male was controlled, and it was associated with pairing success. Contrary to findings in a Swedish population, FPS seemed to be unimportant in male–male competition in our population, which suggests population differences in the role of the two plumage traits. Our results indicate that in a territorial conflict, the characteristics of both participants are important.  相似文献
