The objective of this project is to demonstrate how the ambient air measurement record can be used to define the relationship between O3 (as a surrogate for photochemistry) and secondary particulate matter (PM) in urban air. The approach used is to develop a time-series transfer-function model describing the daily PM10 (PM with less than 10 microm aerodynamic diameter) concentration as a function of lagged PM and current and lagged O3, NO or NO2, CO, and SO2. Approximately 3 years of daily average PM10, daily maximum 8-hr average O3 and CO, daily 24-hr average SO2 and NO2, and daily 6:00 a.m.-9:00 a.m. average NO from the Aerometric Information Retrieval System (AIRS) air quality subsystem are used for this analysis. Urban areas modeled are Chicago, IL; Los Angeles, CA; Phoenix, AZ; Philadelphia, PA; Sacramento, CA; and Detroit, MI. Time-series analysis identified significant autocorrelation in the O3, PM10, NO, NO2, CO, and SO2 series. Cross correlations between PM10 (dependent variable) and gaseous pollutants (independent variables) show that all of the gases are significantly correlated with PM10 and that O3 is also significantly correlated lagged up to two previous days. Once a transfer-function model of current PM10 is defined for an urban location, the effect of an O3-control strategy on PM concentrations is estimated by calculating daily PM10 concentrations with reduced O3 concentrations. Forecasted summertime PM10 reductions resulting from a 5 percent decrease in ambient O3 range from 1.2 microg/m3 (3.03%) in Chicago to 3.9 microg/m3 (7.65%) in Phoenix.  相似文献

Pesticide-humic interactions are known to have environmental significance in modifying the toxicity and mobility of agricultural chemicals. to test this, interaction between gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane (gamma-HCH) released from the sand coated with gamma-HCH and humic acid was investigated using thin layer chromatography and spectral studies such as UV (ultraviolet), IR (infrared), mass and FAB (fast atom bombardment) mass spectrometry. These studies revealed the evidence of loose interchelation between gamma-HCH and humic acid. the significance of the results in relation to detoxification of gamma-HCH in aquatic ecosystems are discussed.  相似文献

Redox behavior of three pollutants, namely endosulfan (EN), o-chlorophenol (OCP) and direct orange 8 (DO8) were investigated electrochemically using sodium montmorillonite clay modified glassy carbon electrode. Influence of pH, scan rate and concentration were studied on the voltammetric response. Suitable medium for the electrochemical studies of EN was pH 1.0 and for other two pollutants pH 13.0. EN exhibited one well-defined reduction peak accounting for irreversible 2e(-) transfer and leading to the removal of one chlorine atom. OCP underwent one electron oxidation to the formation of phenoxy radical resulting in an oxidation peak. DO8 showed two peaks for reductions and two peaks for oxidation as a result of the reduction of azo group and oxidation of phenoxide group. These electrochemical reactions of the three pollutants reveals the suitability of clay modified electrode for the electroanalysis. A differential pulse stripping voltammetric procedure for the determination of these pollutants was developed. The limits of determination for EN, OCP and DO8 are 5-300, 10-800 and 50-800 ppb, respectively.  相似文献

Octenyl succinate starch of degree of substitution (ds) 0.03, 0.07, and 0.11 was synthesized in an aqueous medium. These compounds were then tested for the susceptibility to enzymatic degradation. The multiple-enzyme regime of -amylase, amyloglucosidase, and pullulanase was chosen for the evaluation. This combination of enzymes had been proven to degrade 99.5% of unmodified starch to glucose and hence was chosen for this study. It was found that even small amounts of subsituent caused a considerable decrease in the extent of degradation. The net extent of degradation decreased with increasing ds. Surprisingly, the amount of glucose from all three substituted substrates was quite similar, suggesting the effect small amounts of subtituent had on the enzymatic activity.  相似文献

This study investigates the presence of environmental kuznets curve (EKC) for green house gases (GHG) measured by CO2 emission in Malaysia for the period 1970 to 2011. The study also examines the potential of the renewable source of energy to contain GHG. The long-run significant positive coefficient of GDP indicates that the GHG are increasing with economic growth while the insignificant coefficient on GDP square rejects the EKC transition. These results indicate a high GDP level for the EKC turning point for Malaysia. Therefore, it can be stated that only economic growth cannot reverse the environmental degradation in Malaysia. The government should have to come up with some policy measures to achieve CO2 emission reduction targets that Malaysia has pledged to achieve in Paris Submit (2015). The renewable energy production is found to have significant negative effect on CO2 emission. So government should focus on the renewable source of energy production and should frame a special policy for renewable energy production.  相似文献
