Activists’ investigations of animal cruelty expose the public to suffering that they may otherwise be unaware of, via an increasingly broad-ranging media. This may result in ethical dilemmas and a wide range of emotions and reactions. Our hypothesis was that media broadcasts of cruelty to cattle in Indonesian abattoirs would result in an emotional response by the public that would drive their actions towards live animal export. A survey of the public in Australia was undertaken to investigate their reactions and responses to. The most common immediate reaction was feeling pity for the cattle. Women were more likely than men to feel sad or angry. Most people discussed the media coverage with others afterwards but fewer than 10 % contacted politicians or wrote to newspapers. We conclude that the public were emotionally affected by the media coverage of cruelty to cattle but that this did not translate into significant behavioral change. We recommend that future broadcasts of animal cruelty should advise the public of contact details for counseling and that mental health support contacts, and information should be included on the websites of animal advocacy groups to acknowledge the disturbing effect animal cruelty exposes can have on the public. 相似文献

Experts can provide valuable information to fill knowledge gaps in published research on management effectiveness, particularly for threatened ecosystems, for which there is often limited evidence and the need for prompt intervention to ensure their persistence. One such ecosystem, alpine peatland, is threatened by climate change and other pressures, provides vital ecosystem services, and supports unique biodiversity. In a workshop, we gathered and synthesized into an accessible format information from experts on interventions used, threat context, and intervention effectiveness for Australian alpine peatland and used this knowledge to evaluate local relevance of the global literature for this threatened ecosystem. Experts identified 15 interventions used to conserve Australian peatlands, most of which enhanced or restored peatland condition and effectively addressed diverse threats. Experts’ perspectives and global studies were strongly aligned, suggesting that research on peatland management may be broadly relevant across contexts, despite the distinct characteristics of Australian systems. Our workshop-based expert elicitation approach provided insights into current management practices unavailable in the literature. 相似文献

Analyzing soils for contaminants can be costly. Generally, discrete samples are gathered from within a study area, analyzed by a laboratory and the results are used in a site-specific statistical analysis. Because of the heterogeneities that exist in soil samples within study areas, a large amount of variability and skewness may be present in the sample population. This necessitates collecting a large number of samples to obtain reliable inference on the mean contaminant concentration and to understand the spatial patterns for future remediation. Composite, or Incremental, sampling is a commonly applied method for gathering multiple discrete samples and physically combining them, such that each combination of discrete samples requires a single laboratory analysis, which reduces cost and can improve the estimates of the mean concentration. While incremental sampling can reduce cost and improve mean estimates, current implementations do not readily facilitate the characterization of spatial patterns or the detection of elevated constituent regions within study areas. The methods we present in this work provide efficient estimation and inference for the mean contaminant concentration over the entire spatial area and enable the identification of high contaminant regions within the area of interest. We develop sample design methodologies that explicitly define the characteristics of these designs (such as sample grid layout) and quantify the number of incremental samples that must be obtained under a design criteria to control false positive and false negative (Type I and II) decision errors. Cephalopod mollusks exhibit highly plastic life cycle traits influenced primarily by the interactive effects of food availability,
light cycle and temperature, with the latter perhaps the most influential. Hatchlings of the tropical reef squid Sepioteuthis lessoniana were hatched from field-collected eggs in the laboratory and cultured at different temperatures to evaluate the effect of
temperature on growth rates. All groups showed rapid, sustained growth rates from hatching to a size of 10–25 g. Beyond this
size range, growth was slower and not clearly exponential in form. Growth rate was closely linked to temperature. Squids grown
at approximately 27 °C attained a size of 10 g in as little as 45 days at sustained growth rates of 12.2% body weight day−1 (%bw day−1), while squids cultured at 20 °C required almost 100 days to attain the same size at rates of 5.7%bw day−1. At an age of 55 days and approximately 1 g body weight, juvenile squids cultured at 20 °C were able to accelerate growth
rates from 5.7%bw day−1 to over 12%bw day−1 when temperature was raised to 27 °C. They maintained this growth rate to a size of about 10 g and an age of at least 75 days
post-hatching, indicating that body size and not age is the limiting factor for this rapid post-hatching growth. By comparison,
conspecifics cultured near 27 °C from hatching had shifted out of the rapid post-hatching growth phase by day 50 at sizes
between 10 and 50 g. The hatchlings from temperate to subtropical Japan had consistently higher growth rates at comparable
temperatures than hatchlings from tropical Okinawa. When plotted as growth rate versus temperature, the Japanese group had
a clearly higher slope to the relationship than the tropical populations, equivalent to a 2%bw day−1 difference in growth rate at 25 °C. Age at first egg-laying was decreased at higher culture temperatures; however, overall
life span was not.

Composition B (Comp B) is a commonly used military formulation composed of the toxic explosive compounds 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), and hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX). Numerous studies of the temporal fate of explosive compounds in soils, surface water and laboratory batch reactors have been conducted. However, most of these investigations relied on the application of explosive compounds to the media via aqueous addition and thus these studies do not provide information on the real world loading of explosive residues during detonation events. To address this we investigated the dissolution and sorption of TNT and RDX from Comp B residues loaded to pure mineral phases through controlled detonation. Mineral phases included nontronite, vermiculite, biotite and Ottawa sand (quartz with minor calcite). High Performance Liquid Chromatography and Attenuated Total Reflectance Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy were used to investigate the dissolution and sorption of TNT and RDX residues loaded onto the mineral surfaces. Detonation resulted in heterogeneous loading of TNT and RDX onto the mineral surfaces. Explosive compound residues dissolved rapidly (within 9 h) in all samples but maximum concentrations for TNT and RDX were not consistent over time due to precipitation from solution, sorption onto mineral surfaces, and/or chemical reactions between explosive compounds and mineral surfaces. We provide a conceptual model of the physical and chemical processes governing the fate of explosive compound residues in soil minerals controlled by sorption-desorption processes. 相似文献

A chorion villus sample (CVS) biopsied at 11 weeks' gestation for raised nuchal translucency, revealed monosomy X (presumptive 45,X karyotype) by QF-PCR for rapid aneuploidy testing for chromosomes 13, 18, 21, X and Y. Long-term culture gave the karyotype: 47,XY,+ 21[66]/49,XYY,+ 21,+ 21 [22]. This discrepancy prompted redigestion of the combined residual villus fragments from the original QF-PCR assay. The repeat QF-PCR assay identified the presence of trisomy 21 and a Y chromosome consistent with a 47,XY,+ 21 karyotype. A double non-disjunction event early in embryogenesis in a 47,XY,+ 21 conceptus with subsequent cell lineage compartmentalisation of the three observed cell lines (45,X; 47,XY,+ 21 and 49,XYY,+ 21,+ 21) would account for these results. This is the first reported case to describe complete discrepancy at diagnosis between abnormal karyotypes detected by QF-PCR rapid aneuploidy testing and a cultured karyotype in the same CVS. ABSTRACT Ambient data from Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE) monitors are analyzed to evaluate the spatial structure of SO4 and NO3 aerosols in the mid-Atlantic region. Sub-weekly, seasonal, and annual data values are compared between the IMPROVE Washington, DC, site and three rural sites. Synoptic perturbations are compared between sites to quantify similarities in short-term temporal perturbations of SO4 and NO3. Based on these comparisons between the rural and urban IMPROVE monitors, the spatial structure of SO4 shows broad regional homogeneity that is recognizable from both the long-term average values and the short-term variations. NO3 data on a seasonal and annual basis show much larger spatial gradients between the urban Washington monitor and the three rural monitors than do SO4 data. Short-term NO3 perturbations at the three rural monitors also differ significantly from those at the Washington site. These dissimilarities in NO3 levels between the rural and urban IMPROVE monitors on both short-term and longer-term time scales indicate little homogeneity of NO3 aerosols in the mid-Atlantic region considered here. The volatility of NO3 aerosols and the removal rate of HNO3 via dry deposition could contribute to the spatial variability differences shown here between SO4 and NO3. 相似文献
