Using a novel high-sensitivity capillary electrophoretic method, vertical distributions of iodate, iodide, total inorganic iodine, dissolved organic iodine and total iodine in the North Pacific Ocean (0-5500 m) were determined without any sample pre-treatment other than UV irradiation before total iodine analysis. An extensive set of data demonstrated that the iodine behaviour in the ocean water collected during a cruise in the North Pacific Ocean in February-March 2003 was not conservative but correlated with variations in concentrations of dissolved oxygen and nutrient elements such as silicon, nitrogen and phosphorus. This suggests that the vertical distribution of iodine is associated with biological activities. The dissolved organic iodine was found in the euphotic zone in accord with observations elsewhere in the oceans. The vertical profile of dissolved organic iodine also appears to be related to biogeochemical activity. The concentrations of all measured iodine species vary noticeably above 1000 m but only minor latitudinal changes occur below 1000 m and slight vertical alterations can be observed below 2400 m. These findings are thought to reflect the stratification of nutrients and iodine species with different biological activities in the water column. 相似文献

We investigated the concentrations of wood preservatives in the wood chips produced in wood-waste processing facilities in 1988, 1998–1999, and 2001–2002. Among the wood preservatives used in the past in Japan, halophenols, including PCP, chlordane, and chlorpyrifos, had comparatively high detection rates and high average concentrations in the wood chips produced in 2001–2002. Aldrin and endrin were rarely detected, and DDT was already in low concentrations in those wood chips. Although several types of wood preservative were contained in the wood chips, their concentration levels depended on the sources of the wood wastes. In chips produced from wooden pallets, wooden forms for concrete working, or wood discarded from nondemolition sources, no organochlorine wood preservatives were detected, and chlorpyrifos and chlorophenols were detected at one order of magnitude lower than the average concentrations in chips produced from wood wastes discarded in house demolitions. 相似文献

near regions of heavy industry. The concentrations of particles larger than 1.0 μ m in diameter dramatically increased during
the Kosa phenomena on 6–8 and 18–24 March. The number concentrations of coarse particles (> 3.0 μm) showed distinct diurnal

Nuclear waste repositories need highly durable cementitious materials to function for over thousands of years while resisting leaching and degradation. The durability of cementitious material can be effectively improved by reducing permeability and by changing cement hydrates to a less soluble matrix. This paper describes the properties of carbonated new cementitious materials containing belite-rich cement and gamma-2CaO.SiO2 as main components. We developed a method to analyze atmospheric SO(x) (particulate SO(4)(2-)+ gaseous SO(2)) and NO(x) (NO + NO(2)) simultaneously using a battery-operated portable filter pack sampler. NO(x) determination using a filter pack method is new. SO(x) and NO(x) were collected on a Na(2)CO(3) filter and PTIO (2-phenyl-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-3-oxide-1-oxyl) + TEA (triethanolamine) filters (6 piled sheets), respectively. Aqueous solutions were then used to extract pollutants trapped by the filters and the resulting extracts were pre-cleaned (e.g. elimination of PTIO) and analyzed for sulfate and nitrite by ion chromatography. Recoveries of SO(2) and NO(x) from standard pollutant gases and consistency of the field data with those from other instrumental methods were examined to evaluate our method. SO(x) and NO(x) could be analyzed accurately with determination limits of 0.2 ppbv and 1.0 ppbv (as daily average concentrations), respectively. The synthesis of recycled plastics from recovered monomeric materials obtained from the depolymerization reaction of fiber-reinforced
plastics (FRP) was examined. The depolymerization reaction of FRP in the presence of N,N-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) smoothly yielded the corresponding monomers, which mainly consisted of dimethyl phthalates.
The polymerization reaction with this monomer failed to form the corresponding unsaturated polyesters due to contamination
by N-methyl-4-pyridone, a decomposition product of DMAP. An efficient purification of the recovered monomer was achieved by washing
with water, and the purified monomer successfully yielded the corresponding polymers. A hardness test revealed that the polymers
were as hard as the polyester made from virgin materials. The present modification provides a practical method for the preparation

To recycle municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) bottom ash, synthesis of hydrothermal minerals from bottom ash was performed to stabilize heavy metals. MSWI bottom ash was mixed with SiO(2), Al(OH)(3), and Mg(OH)(2) so its chemical composition was similar to that of hydrothermal clay minerals. These solid specimens were mixed with water at a liquid/solid ratio of 5. The reaction temperature was 200 degrees C, and reactions were performed for 24-240h. Generation of kaolinite/smectite mixed-layer clay mineral was found in the samples after the reaction of the mixture of bottom ash, SiO(2), and Mg(OH)(2). Calcium silicate hydrate minerals such as tobermorite and xonotlite were also generated. X-ray powder diffraction suggested the presence of amorphous materials. Leaching tests at various pHs revealed that the concentration of heavy metals in the leachates from MSWI bottom ash hydrothermally treated with SiO(2) and Mg(OH)(2) was lower than that in leachates from non-treated bottom ash, especially under acid conditions. Hydrothermal treatment with modification of chemical composition may have potential for the recycling of MSWI bottom ash. 相似文献

Dioxins and their surrogates were continuously monitored during the startup of two municipal waste in cinerators (MWIs). The surrogates studied included low-volatility organohalogen compounds (LVOH) sampled by online systems, as well as chlorobenzenes (CBs) and chlorophenols (CPs). The changes in levels of LVOH, CBs, and CPs corresponded well with the trend of the toxicity equivalent quantity (TEQ). The correlation of LVOH with TEQ was fairly good, whereas that of CBs and CPs with TEQ was not consistent. The correlation of LVOH with TEQ involved a memory effect related to the delayed emission of less volatile compounds. The isomer analysis of the dioxins present under startup conditions showed evidence of the memory effect, i.e., highly chlorinated isomers were emitted slowly, whereas low-chlorinated isomers and LVOH decreased rapidly as the temperature rose. LVOH cannot act as a perfect dioxin surrogate, but it can give a versatile, quick, and comprehensive warning of the presence of organohalogen compounds because it is free from the memory effect and covers many kinds of organohalogen compounds, including dioxins. 相似文献

Because of recent volume increases, appropriate management of plastic recycling, which generates various organic compounds, is required to ensure the chemical safety of the processes. The processing temperature and resin type are the important factors determining both the efficiency of the processes and the emission of chemicals. Therefore, we studied the thermal degradation of various plastics at various temperatures from 70 to 300 °C under oxygen-present conditions to identify the semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) emitted and to understand their thermal behaviors. The plastics examined were nitrogen-containing resins, such as polyamide 6, polyurethane, melamine formaldehyde, urea formaldehyde and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene. Major commodity plastics were also investigated for comparison. In total, more than 500 SVOCs were detected as emissions from plastics. While various nitrogen-containing SVOCs were detected from nitrogen-containing resins, the major commodity plastics released only these, which possibly were included as additives. These results indicate that the nitrogen atoms in the SVOCs emitted originated from the resins and additives, and not from ambient air at low temperature. As a result of the detection of raw materials, degradation chemicals and by-products of the polymers in the emissions, we found that the variation in chemical species is dependent on the resins. Additives were also emitted from all the resins, meaning that these chemicals were also released to the environment at the temperature examined. In most cases, the numbers and concentrations of SVOCs increased with increasing heating temperature. Evaporation rate of multi-component liquid such as motor gasoline is expected to change greatly with progress of evaporation because its composition changes. Therefore it is difficult to predict accurately amount of generated combustible vapor in the case that a multi-component liquid is spilt on a floor. Then, we assumed an evaporation model that composition of the vapor obeys the Raoult's law which considers the activity coefficient. Using the model, we calculated the vapor composition, the vapor pressure and the evaporation rate of the liquid. Then, comparison was done between the calculated values and the measured values obtained in this study. “Weight loss fraction” was used as a parameter signifying the progress of evaporation. The variations of the evaporation property were accurately predicted by the model. We derived a prediction model of the amount of generated combustible vapor from the relation between weight loss fraction and evaporation rate. It was found that the amount of generated vapor was expressed as a logarithmic function of time in case of a five-component liquid. Furthermore, we showed that the predicted flash point of a liquid using the composition obtained from the model was in good agreement with an experimental result. 相似文献
