Organochlorine compounds were analysed in three fish species of different feeding types from the area of Elephant Island in the Antarctic. In 1996, hexachlorobenzene (HCB) (means: 15-20 ng/g lipid), p,p'-DDE (5-13 ng/g lipid) and mirex (1-7 ng/g lipid) predominated, while PCBs were minor components (PCB 153: 0.4-2 ng/g lipid). Concentration patterns were species-dependent: PCB 180, PCB 153, mirex, nonachlor III, trans-nonachlor and the toxaphene compound B8-1413 were highest in the bottom invertebrate feeder Gobionotothen gibberifrons and lowest in the krill feeder Champsocephalus gunnari. Levels of p,p'-DDE, PCB 138 and heptachloro-1'-methyl-1,2'-bipyrrole (Q1), a natural bioaccumulative product, were highest in the fish feeder Chaenocephalus aceratus, whereas HCB was present in about equal concentrations in all species. Most compounds were taken up preferentially via the benthic food chain, the chlorinated bipyrrole via the pelagic food chain and HCB from the water. In antarctic fish, biomagnification was generally more important than bioconcentration. Between 1987 and 1996, most persistent organic pollutant (POP) levels showed significant increases in the benthos feeder and the fish feeder, while they remained nearly constant or increased less in the krill feeder. Hence, the former species represent indicator species for changing POP levels in Antarctica. Ratios (1996/1987) of average concentrations in G. gibberifrons were: PCB 138 0.7, HCB 0.8, B8-1413 1.5, PCB 180 1.7, PCB 153 1.8, p,p'-DDE 2.0, nonachlor III 2.9, trans-nonachlor 3.3, mirex 6.7. By comparison with trends in the northern hemisphere it is concluded that global distribution of HCB is close to equilibrium. Changing levels of other POPs reflect global redistribution and increasing transfer to antarctic waters probably due to recent usage in the southern hemisphere and climate changes. 相似文献

Octachlorostyrene could be identified and quantified in fish, water and sediment of the North Sea and adjacent estuaries by high resolution gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Lipid related octachlorostyrene levels in livers of various fish ranged from 20 to 3700 ng/g lipid. Comparing levels from 1972 and 1983 no remarkable differences could be observed among the samples investigated. In fish livers originating from the Mediterranaen, North Atlantic and the Red Sea octachlorostyrene was not detectable. 相似文献

The recent reintroduction of the gray wolf ( Canis lupus ) to Yellowstone signifies a constructive change, but the overall record in the United States on large carnivore conservation remains poor. Many developing countries are determined to do a better job of conserving predators, including their critical habitat and prey populations. We describe current efforts to protect tigers ( Panther tigris ), jaguars ( Panthera onca ), and large-scale forest habitat in Asia, Central America, and Africa. These initiatives take a comprehensive approach that includes biological field research, the identification of local human interests, and a growing recognition of the need for cooperation across political lines. Though often supported by U.S. technical assistance, this international experience could be used better to inform and improve carnivore conservation efforts in North America. Failure to improve our domestic performance or to fully appreciate the contributions of far less developed countries could weaken global efforts to maintain and restore populations of large carnivores. 相似文献

The aim of the present study was to determine the long-time trends in concentrations and depositions of major ions in wet precipitation samples collected at 11 sampling sites from the Austrian precipitation chemistry network in the period 1984-1999. The analytical results were treated by the use of least square linear regression method. It is shown that a serious decrease of sulfate (between 30% and 60% for the period) and hydrogen ion (between 60% and 102% for the period) concentrations and depositions is achieved at almost all sampling sites and in most of these cases the linear trend proves to be statistically significant. Nitrogen containing ions and base cations do not reveal a distinct trend of changing and in the majority of the sites the linear models are not adequate. In principle, an overall slight concentration and deposition decrease for these major ions is observed (up to 30% for the period of observation) but some substantial exceptions are also found (site Haunsberg or site Lobau). The changes in chloride concentration and deposition, too, do not indicate significant linear trend and, in general, are decreasing for the period of monitoring. In order to give some explanation of the exceptional behaviour of some of the major ions in several sites, an additional comparison with Austrian emission data (sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ammonium) and with data from five EMEP sites from neighbouring countries is performed. A significant West-East trend of acidity increase is found as well as a good correlation with the emission trends. An artificial sediment was tested for use in evaluating the potential hazard of toxicants on benthic organisms. The seawater-sediment system was assessed by use of the pyrethroid insecticide, fenvalerate, as the model toxicant for testing with larvae of the grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio, an ecologically important estuarine species. The sediment was prepared from commercially available components, and mixed with the toxicant to provide concentrations of 1, 10 and 100 microg fenvalerate kg(-1) dry sediment in 20 ppt seawater. Sediment free of the insecticide served as the control. Throughout the study, fenvalerate was not detected in the water column, but was measured in sediment at the nominal concentration of 100 microg kg(-1). The P. pugio population was adversely affected by fenvalerate. The effect occurred at metamorphosis, when larvae changed from pelagic individuals to benthic organisms. At this period, larvae were in direct contact with sediment. A portion of the population was tolerant of the insecticide. 相似文献

This study shows that biological assessments of water quality status using biomass estimates of wet, dry, and ash-free dry weights and counts of individual organisms from a small, headwater stream in southwestern Ohio provide essentially similar results concerning the impact of a sewage treatment plant discharge. Of the indices of biotic status for the stream segment employed for data evaluation; Diversity Index (D), Community Diversity Index (d), Trophic Condition Index (TCI), and Empirical Biotic Index (EBI), the latter two provided evaluations most consistent with benchmark water chemistry and physics information concerning the trophic status of the stream. In addition, the percent composition of macro-invertebrate taxa by pollutional category; clean water, facultative, and pollution tolerant, as ascribed using TCI and EBI ranges for individual taxa collected in combination of Ekman grab, rock-filled basket sampler and drift net samples, proves adequate for interpretation of biotic status. 相似文献
