Human adipose tissue samples obtained during autopsies in 5 Canadian municipalities within the Great Lakes basin were analysed for polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and dibenzofurans using gas chromatography-high resolution-mass spectrometry. The mean congener values for male and female donors in each municipality are comparable with previously reported data. No significant differences in congener levels between male and female and between municipalities were detected. A positive correlation between congener level and age was observed for several congeners as well as for the total congener concentration expressed as its 2378-TCDD toxic equivalent. 相似文献

A single i.p. dose (120 mg/kg) of thiram given to male Sprague-Dawley rats caused a significant increase in the activity of SGOT and SGPT 24 hr post-treatment indicating liver damage. A considerable diminution in the serum cholinesterase activity was also noted in the treated rats as against the control animals. Additional evidence for thiram-induced liver toxicity is provided by the observation that there was approximately 50% inhibition of the activity of hepatic microsomal benzphetamine N-demethylase with a concomitant decrease in the concentration of cytochrome P-450, an important component of the mixed-function oxidase system. Although not significant, hepatic glutathione levels were also depleted by thiram, probably making the liver susceptible to toxic injury. 相似文献

Two collaborative studies have been conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Exposure Research Laboratory (NERL) and National Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory to determine personal exposures and physiological responses to particulate matter (PM) of elderly persons living in a retirement facility in Fresno, CA. Measurements of PM and other criteria air pollutants were made inside selected individual residences within the retirement facility and at a central outdoor site on the premises. In addition, personal PM exposure monitoring was conducted for a subset of the participants, and ambient PM monitoring data were available for comparison from the NERL PM research monitoring platform in central Fresno. Both a winter (February 1-28, 1999) and a spring (April 19-May 16, 1999) study were completed so that seasonal effects could be evaluated. During the spring study, a more robust personal exposure component was added, as well as a more detailed evaluation of physical factors, such as air-exchange rate, that are known to influence the penetration of particles into the indoor environment. In this paper, comparisons are made among measured personal PM exposures and PM mass concentrations measured at the NERL Fresno Platform site, outside on the premises of the retirement facility, and inside selected residential apartments at the facility during the two 28-day study periods. The arithmetic daily mean personal PM2.5 exposure during the winter study period was 13.3 micrograms/m3, compared with 9.7, 20.5, and 21.7 micrograms/m3 for daily mean overall apartment, outdoor, and ambient (i.e., platform) concentrations, respectively. With increasing use of herbicides there has been growing concern that spray drift from treated land will affect vegetation on adjacent nature reserves and other areas of high conservation interest. A preliminary attempt was made to assess this risk by placing a range of native plant species at different distances downwind from standardised drift events and assessing lethal effects and sublethal damage. Five herbicides were tested: asulam, 'Finesse' (chlorsulfuron + metsulfuron-methyl), glyphosate, MCPA and mecoprop. Applications were made at the appropriate time of years for each herbicide (autumn, spring and summer), and at both low and high wind speeds. The maximum safe distance at which no lethal effects were found was 6 m from the sprayer, but for most herbicides the distance was 2 m or less. Generally, damage symptoms were found at greater distances than lethal effects, but in most cases there was rapid recovery by the end of the growing season. These observations are consistent with drift-deposition models, in which the fallout of herbicide droplets has been measured. It is suggested that buffer zones surrounding nature reserves should be in the order of 5-10 m for ground sprayers to minimise the risk of herbicide impacts on these habitats. 相似文献

Emission factors for selected volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate emissions were developed while processing eight commercial grades of polycarbonate (PC) and one grade of a PC/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) blend. A small commercial-type extruder was used, and the extrusion temperature was held constant at 304 degrees C. An emission factor was calculated for each substance measured and is reported as pounds released to the atmosphere/million pounds of polymer resin processed [ppm (wt/wt)]. Scaled to production volumes, these emission factors can be used by processors to estimate emission quantities from similar PC processing operations. 相似文献

There has been an historical decline in the seagrass beds in Maho and Francis Bays, St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands: presently (1986) there are only five small seagrass beds in shallows water. These seagrass beds are highly disturbed by heavy boat usage and are intensively grazed by the green turtle Chelonia mydas L. Fifteen to 50 boats anchor each night in the bays: anchor scars cause a loss of up to 6.5 m2 d-1 or 1.8% yr-1 of the seagrass beds. Seagrasses regrew into such scars only minimally within a period of 7 mo. The size of the green turtle population was estimated at 50 subadults and their feeding behavior was determined by direct observation and radiotelemetry. The behavior of the green turtles differed from other observations published on the species. Here, the turtles grazed all available Thalassia testudinum, their preferred seagrass food, rather than creating discrete grazing scars, and spent all their waking hours (9 h per day) feeding. Areal productivity of T. testudinum leaves (33 to 97 mg dry wt m-2d-1) in the bays was at least an order of magnitude lower than published values or than the productivity of another, lessdisturbed seagrass bed on St. John, despite having comparable leaf-shoot density. Leaf shoots were stunted, fragile, achlorotic, and had only two leaves as opposed to the five leaves per shoot more typically seen. The green turtle population was near the estimated carrying capacity of T. testudinum, based on the standing crop and productivity of T. testudinum and the grazing rate of the turtles. The effect of disturbance of T. testudinum from boats and turtles was assessed by excluding these with emergent fences. Within 3 mo of protection, the areal and shoot-specific productivity of T. testudinum leaves as well as leaf size increased significantly compared to unprotected areas. Conservation efforts are recommended in Maho Bays and Francis because seagrass productivity is low, disturbance rates are higher than recovery rates, the turtles cannot increase further their feeding rate in order to compensate for such factors, and there are few alternate sources of T. testudinum on the north shore of St. John.Contribution No. 175 from West Indies Laboratory, Teague Bay, Christiansted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands 00820, USA 相似文献

Results from plankton sampling in the northern North Sea with the Continuous Plankton Recorder (CPR) and the Undulating Oceanographic Recorder (UOR) during the Fladen Ground Experiment in 1976 (FLEX 76) are summarised. The first evidence of the spring outbreak of phytoplankton was on 19 April, the day after the first signs of vertical stability of the water column were observed. This was followed by spawning of the euphausiid Thysanoessa inermis and rapid increase in the numbers of Calanus finmarchicus. C. finmarchicus was the most abundant species over the FLEX period (19 March to 3 June) and, together with T. inermis, accounted for over 80% of the dry weight of the zooplankton standing stock. Gene flow among giant clam (Tridacna gigas) populations in Pacific does not parallel ocean circulation 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Tridacna gigas (L.) populations were sampled from 13 locations throughout the west Pacific in 1990–1991 and screened for allozyme variation at seven polymorphic loci. Significant genetic differences were found between the few large stocks of T. gigas remaining in the world. Cluster analysis identified two major regional groups of populations: a Central Pacific group consisting of Kiribati and the Marshall Islands, and a West Pacific group comprising all other populations. Within the latter group, the Great Barrier Reef populations were significantly differentiated from those in the Solomon Islands. The main routes of gene flow did not run parallel with known major surface currents as might be expected, but crossed them. Gene exchange was limited east-west between the Central and West Pacific groups and the GBR and the Solomon Islands. The lack of correspondence between the major surface currents and the routes of gene flow suggests that the genetic structure of T. gigas reflects historical patterns of migration that no longer occur, rather than presentday dispersal. These findings raise fundamental questions concerning the origin and maintenance of genetic diversity in Pacific faunas, and have important implications for the mariculture and conservation of T. gigas. 相似文献

Radiocarbon from nuclear fallout is a known health risk. However, corresponding risks from natural background radiocarbon
incorporated directly into human genetic material have not been fully appreciated. Here we show that the average person will
experience between 3.4 × 1010 and 3.4 × 1011 lifetime chromosomal damage events from natural background radiocarbon incorporated into DNA and histones, potentially leading
to cancer, birth defects, or accelerated aging. This human genetic damage can be significantly reduced using low radiocarbon
foods produced by growing plants in CO2 recycled from ordinary industrial greenhouse gas fossil fuel emissions, providing additional incentive for the carbon sequestration. 相似文献

On a small island such as Malta where many developers and policy makers place a large emphasis on social use and develoment
values, which encourages recreational/industrial development, it is often hard to promote the monetary value of coastal conservation
due to strong competition with the large tourism industry. An assessment of the ecological (conservation) and economic (use/development)
values of four popular Maltese bathing areas (Mellieha, St. George’s, Ramla and Ghajn Tuffieha Bay) was carried out by evaluating
their ability to provide a number of functions. This is dependent on the environments’ inherent characteristics within the
context of locally applicable time and space functions. Function Analysis is an innovative technique able to provide a means
for assessing changes in environmental quality of an area and evaluating the sustainability of applied management regimes.
This paper is a first example of an application of the Functional Analysis approach in Malta. Local application of this technique
indicates a need for additional refinement in application to coastal areas. Analysis showed that St. George’s, had the lowest
conservation value, Ramla and Ghajn Tuffieha bay had the highest conservation values, Mellieha Bay had high conservation value
and use/development potential. In this context, conservation value is understood to reflect values of biodiversity, information/knowledge
