Agricultural landscapes, although often highly altered in nature, provide habitat for many species of amphibian. However, the persistence and health of amphibian populations are likely to be compromised by the escalating use of pesticides and other agricultural chemicals. This review examines some of the issues relating to exposure of amphibian populations to these chemicals and places emphasis on mechanisms of toxicity. Several mechanisms are highlighted, including those that may disrupt thyroid activity, retinoid pathways, and sexual differentiation. Special emphasis is also placed on the various interactions that may occur between different agro-chemicals and between chemicals and other environmental factors. We also examine the indirect effects on amphibian populations that occur when their surrounding pond communities are altered by chemicals. 相似文献

Models assessing exposure to air pollution often focus on macro-scale estimates of exposure to all types of sources for a particular pollutant across an urban study area. While results based on these models may aid policy makers in identifying larger areas of elevated exposure risk, they often do not differentiate the proportion of population exposure attributable to different polluting sources (e.g. traffic or industrial). In this paper, we introduce a population exposure modeling system that integrates air dispersion modeling, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and population exposure techniques to spatially characterize a source-specific exposure to ambient air pollution for an entire urban population at a fine geographical scale. By area, total population exposure in Dallas County in 2000 was more attributable to vehicle polluting sources than industrial polluting sources at all levels of exposure. Population exposure was moderately correlated with vehicle sources (r = 0.440, p < 0.001) and weakly with industrial sources (r = 0.069, p = 0.004). Population density was strongly correlated with total exposure (r = 0.896, p < 0.001) but was not significantly correlated with individual or combined sources. The results of this study indicate that air quality assessments must incorporate more than industrial or vehicle polluting sources-based population exposure values alone, but should consider multiple sources. The population exposure modeling system proposed in this study shows promise for use by municipal authorities, policy makers, and epidemiologists in evaluating and controlling the quality of the air in the process of urban planning and mitigation measures. 相似文献

The California Air Resources Board, CARB, has participated in a program to quantify particulate matter (PM) emissions with a European methodology, which is known as the Particulate Measurement Programme (PMP). The essence of the PMP methodology is that the diesel PM from a Euro 4 vehicle equipped with a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) consists primarily of solid particles with a size range greater than 23 nm. The PMP testing and the enhanced testing performed by CARB have enabled an increased understanding of both the progress that has been made in PM reduction, and the future remaining challenges for new and improved DPF-equipped diesel vehicles. A comparison of measured regulated emissions and solid particle number emissions with the results obtained by the PMP participating international laboratories was a success, and CARB’s measurements and standard deviations compared well with the other laboratories. Enhanced measurements of the influence of vehicle conditioning prior to testing on PM mass and solid particle number results were performed, and some significant influences were discovered. For example, the influence of vehicle preconditioning on particle number results was significant for both the European and USA test driving cycles. However, the trends for the cycles were opposite with one cycle showing an increase and the other cycle showing a decrease in particle number emissions. If solid particle size distribution and total particle numbers are to be used as proposed in PMP, then a greater understanding of the quality and errors associated with measurement technologies is advisable.In general, particle counting instruments gave results with similar trends, but cycle-to-cycle testing variation was observed. Continuous measurements of particle number concentrations during test cycles have given detailed insight into PM generation. At the present time there is significant variation in the capabilities of the particle counting instruments in terms of particle size and concentration.Current measurements show the existence of a large number of volatile and semi-volatile particles of yet-to-be-resolved chemical composition in diesel exhaust, especially during DPF regeneration, and these particles are not included in the PMP methodology because they are smaller than 20 nm. It will be very challenging to improve our understanding of this class of diesel particulate matter. 相似文献

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) has closed or posted advisories at public beaches at Lake of the Ozarks State Park in Missouri because of Escherichia coli (E. coli) concentration exceedances in recent years. Spatial and temporal patterns of E. coli concentrations, microbial source tracking, novel sampling techniques, and beach‐use patterns were studied during the 2012 recreational season to identify possible sources, origins, and occurrence of E. coli contamination at Grand Glaize Beach (GGB). Results indicate an important source of E. coli contamination at GGB was E. coli released into the water column by bathers resuspending avian‐contaminated sediments, especially during high‐use days early in the recreational season. Escherichia coli concentrations in water, sediment, and resuspended sediment samples all decreased throughout the recreational season likely because of decreasing lake levels resulting in sampling locations receding away from the initial spring shoreline as well as natural decay and physical transport out of the cove. Weekly MDNR beach monitoring, based solely on E. coli concentrations, at GGB during this study inaccurately predicted E. coli exceedances, especially on weekends and holidays. Interestingly, E. coli of human origin were measured at concentrations indicative of raw sewage in runoff from an excavation of a nearby abandoned septic tank that had not been used for nearly two years. 相似文献

Behavioral responses have been applied for decades as tools for aquatic toxicity testing, but have received far less attention than studies assessing lethality, development or reproduction. With improved visual and non-visual assessment tools and increased knowledge of the importance of behavior for organism health and fitness, interest in behavioral analysis has increased in recent years. However, to our knowledge there has never been a quantitative assessment of the available techniques for organismal toxicity testing, so it is not clear whether behavioral studies represent valuable additions to environmental monitoring. We performed a meta-analysis comparing the relative sensitivities and average durations of behavioral studies to those assessing acute lethality, development and reproduction. Results demonstrate that the average duration of behavioral studies is consistently less than developmental or reproductive studies, and that behavioral endpoints are generally more sensitive than those assessing development or reproduction. We found effect sizes to be lower but power to be higher in behavioral and reproductive studies compared to studies assessing development, which likely relates to low sample sizes commonly used in developmental studies. Overall, we conclude that behavioral studies are comparatively fast and sensitive, and therefore warrant further attention as tools for assessing the toxicological effects of environmental contaminants. We suggest that research aimed at developing and optimizing techniques for behavioral analysis could prove extremely useful to the field of toxicology, but that future work must be directed at determining what specific behaviors are most sensitive to various classes of contaminants, and at understanding the relevance of changes to discrete behaviors for influencing organismal and population-level health and fitness. 相似文献

Background: There is need to understand biological markers and mechanisms in Gulf War illness (GWI).Goal: To examine whether and how eicosanoids – prostaglandins and leukotrienes – are altered in veterans with GWI.Methods: Seventy participants including 37 GWI and 33 healthy controls, shared exposure information, and had plasma eicosanoids assessed – prostaglandin F2 alpha (pgf2α), prostaglandin D2 (pgd2), leukotriene B4 (lb4) among others. Values were compared for GWI versus controls. Eicosanoid intercorrelations were compared in cases vs. controls. For the most significantly altered eicosanoid in GWI, exposure and symptom relations were assessed.Results: Prostaglandins and leukotrienes were depressed in GWI, strongest for pgf2α, then lb4. Eicosanoid intercorrelations differed in GWI vs. controls. Fuel-solvent, pesticide, radioactive chemicals and metal exposures related negatively to pgf2α; as, in GWI, did chemical attack and vaccines. Multivariate predictors included fuels-solvents and radioactive chemicals (negative); tetanus vaccine and herbicides (positive). Fuels-solvents and radioactive chemicals predicted lower pgf2α in cases, controls, and all participants controlled for case status. Lower pgf2α related to GWI “Kansas criteria” domains of pain, respiratory, and (borderline significantly) skin symptoms.Conclusion: Multiple eicosanoids are depressed in GWI, particularly pgf2α and lb4. Prior fuel-solvent exposures, radioactive chemicals, and (in GWI cases) vaccines were linked to lower pgf2α. 相似文献

One of the most often asked questions from regulators considering monitored natural attenuation (MNA) for a site is if there are mechanisms in situ that can completely detoxify the contaminant of concern. This article describes a method that uses data derived from compound‐specific isotope analysis (CSIA) to investigate if complete in situ degradation of trichloroethene (TCE) has occurred. MNA was the selected remediation strategy at the former England Air Force Base (fEAFB) in Louisiana. Previously declining concentrations of TCE, 1,2‐cis‐dichloroethene, and vinyl chloride had increased in selected wells, and less ethene was observed than expected on the basis of mass balance. Reductive dechlorination, partial or otherwise, could not explain observed trends, so the question at fEAFB had become: Was there an in situ mechanism for complete TCE detoxification (i.e., complete degradation to innocuous end products) at the site? CSIA was used for investigating this question at fEAFB. A previously developed formalism was adapted to interpret the CSIA data to answer the question. During the summer of 1966, a selected group of automobiles from the Cincinnati phase of the GSA study were used in an irradiation chamber study. The study was conducted to evaluate the photochemical air pollution potential of representative models of the equipped and unequipped automobiles. Only one set of automobiles, the unequipped Chevelles, produced exhaust capable upon irradiation of forming significant levels of oxidant and PAN. Neither the equipped Chevelles nor any of the Fords or Plymouths, whether equipped or unequipped, produced exhaust having the characteristics necessary to form oxidant or PAN upon irradiation. The eye irritation level reported by the panel upon irradiation of exhaust from unequipped Chevelles was much higher than that produced by the irradiated exhausts from any of the other types of automobiles. Overall, there does appear to be some small improvement with respect to eye irritation in comparing equipped with unequipped automobiles. To a large extent, the improvement in the air pollution potential of exhaust from equipped Chevelles compared to the unequipped Chevelles can be attributed to the reduction in the hydrocarbon to nitrogen oxide ratio. The irradiated exhaust from equipped Chevelles, except for aldehyde levels, is about the same in photochemical air pollution potential as are the exhausts from both equipped and unequipped Fords and Plymouths which are maintained under lean operating conditions. Such irradiation chamber measurements are related to exhaust not hydrocarbon reactivities. Hydrocarbon reactivities can be obtained by direct measurement of reactive and nonreactive hydrocarbons in the automotive emissions. 相似文献

Photooxidation of lower-reactivity paraffinic hydrocarbons with nitrogen oxide was investigated. Maximum oxidant yield occurred at much lower ratios of hydrocarbon to nitrogen oxide than in more reactive systems such as propylene-nitrogen oxide mixtures. Appreciable oxidant yields were obtained even from irradiation of propane-nitrogen oxide mixtures at low ratios of nitrogen oxide to propane. These results, and nitrogen dioxide and oxidant dosages computed from these measurements, substantiate the importance of reactivity characteristics in formulation of decisions on control of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides. 相似文献
