A model has been developed to assess the rate of evaporation of chemical compounds from surface waters. It is based on the two-boundary-layer model of Lewis and Whitman, on critically evaluated literature data and on specific experiments. The rate of evaporation is assessed as a function of the diffusion coefficient in air and water and of Henry's coefficient in water, being the physico-chemical parameters, and as a function of the wind speed, the water temperature and the water depth, being the environmental parameters. 相似文献

The photochemical formation of singlet oxygen in some Dutch surface waters has been investigated using the method developed by Zepp (1). However, when monitoring the consumption of oxygen beside that of 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), the compound added to chemically snare singlet oxygen, it was found that appreciable, but varying parts of DMF were used up by secondary reactions leading largely to the same products, viz. cis- and trans-diacetylethylene. When taking the oxygen consumption as a measure for the singlet oxygen production on the basis of the stoichiometry of the primary reaction, a fair correlation between the singlet oxygen production and the total organic carbon (TOC) content was found for this selection of Dutch surface water samples. The steady-state concentrations of singlet oxygen determined in this way were about one order of magnitude lower than those found by Zepp (1) and by Zafiriou (2). 相似文献

Summary A laboratory study was conducted with white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) to determine (1) if cohabitation and/or successful mating inhibits infanticide, and if so for how long, and (2) if males and females can discriminate between their own (familiar) and strange (unfamiliar) pups. Infanticidal males and females that were paired for 15 days and did not reproduce were not inhibited from killing pups, whereas infanticidal males and females that were paired until they reproduced were inhibited from committing infanticide at 4 days postpartum. Neither males nor females discriminated between familiar and unfamiliar pups with regard to engaging in infanticide. Approximately 50% of wild-caught males and females killed pups in the laboratory. Infanticidal pairs bred significantly sooner than did noninfanticidal pairs. The results are consistent with the promiscuous nature of P. leucopus males and territoriality of P. leucopus females.

ABSTRACT Because the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has changed the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for ambient particulate matter (PM), there is a great deal of interest in determining recent PM trends. This paper examines trends in PM10 (i.e., particulate matter less than 10 micrometers in diameter) for areas of the United States based on their attainment status—for PM10 and ozone nonattainment and attainment areas. The analysis also focuses on urban, suburban, and rural areas, and eastern and western areas. The time period of evaluation is from 1988 through 1995. To shed further light on the ambient PM10 trends, trends in ambient SO2, NO2, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are also analyzed. Finally, trends in emission inventories of SO2, NOx, VOCs, and PM10 are evaluated. Results of the analysis show that widespread and similar reductions in PM10 levels have occurred over the last seven years. Annual reductions range from 3.0% to 3.8%, with the greatest reductions coming in PM10 nonattainment areas, but with very significant reductions also in PM10 attainment areas, ozone attainment areas, and rural areas. The widespread reductions appear to be due to a set of controls or common factors that are having a fairly uniform effect in all of the areas. The consistency of the reductions in different areas suggests that the reductions may also be primarily in the fine particles (i.e., those less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter, or PM2.5), which are more readily transported than coarse particles. 相似文献

To estimate the human health risk of inhaled diesel particles, it is necessary to know their deposition and retention in the respiratory tract and the rate of dissociation of mutagenic compounds associated with the particles. The deposition of a chain aggregate aerosol of 67Ga2O3 with size and shape characteristics similar to diesel exhaust particles has been evaluated using Beagle dogs. Approximately one-third of the inhaled activity is deposited in the respiratory tract with most of the particles deposited in the lung. The mutagenic activity present in dichloromethane, dog serum, dog lung lavage fluid, saline, dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL) and albumin following incubation of these fluids with diesel exhaust particles was determined in the Ames Salmonella system. As observed by other investigators, large quantities of mutagenic activity were removed by dichloromethane. A very small amount of mutagenic activity was removed by the serum and lavage fluid over a 3-day incubation period. No activity was detected following elution with the other solvents. The finding that minimal mutagenic activity could be demonstrated in the biological media following incubation with diesel exhaust particles may be due to a lack of removal of mutagens from the particles or an inactivation of removed mutagens by protein binding or other processes. 相似文献

Visible injury caused by ozone is recorded every year in native plant species growing in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (USA). One of the most sensitive species, cutleaf coneflower (Rudbeckia laciniata L.), shows great variation in symptoms between and within populations but the causes of this variation and its ecological significance are currently unknown. This paper presents data relating to genetic variation, ozone concentrations, stomatal conductance and light (PAR) within populations. The data show that populations differ in genetic diversity, one consisting of only three genets while another was very diverse. In the former population, symptoms varied greatly within a single genet, pointing to a large micro-environmental influence. Measurements of ozone, stomatal conductance and PAR within plant canopies suggest that variation in symptom expression is unlikely to be due to differences in ozone flux and more likely to be due to variation in light. The variation in visible symptoms raises the question of what bioindicators actually indicate, and it suggests that symptoms should be interpreted with great caution until the underlying causes of that variation are fully understood. 相似文献

Declines in populations of and reproductive success of wood storks and other wading birds have occurred in the Florida Everglades
over the past several decades. These declines have been concurrent with major changes in the Everglades’ landscape characteristics.
Among the plausible hypotheses that relate to landscape change are the following: (1) general loss of habitat; (2) heavy loss
of specific habitat, namely, short-hydroperiod wetlands that provide high prey availability early in the breeding season;
and (3) an increase in frequency of major drying out of the central slough areas, which can affect prey availability late
in the breeding season.
These three hypotheses were compared using an individual-based model of wood stork (Mycteria americana) reproduction. This model simulated the behavior and energetics of each individual wood stork in a breeding colony on 15-min
time intervals. Changes in water depth and prey availability occurred on daily time steps. Simulation results showed a threshold
response in reproductive success to reduction of wetland heterogeneity. Model comparisons in which (1) only short-hydroperiod
wetlands were removed and (2) wetlands of both long and short hydroperiods were removed showed that, for the same loss of
total area, the specific habitat removal caused a much greater reduction in wood stork reproduction, indicating hypothesis
2 may be a more likely explanation than hypothesis 1. Reduction of initial prey availability in the central slough areas (simulating
