Agricultural intensification, at local and landscape scales, has caused a decrease in plant diversity and changes in species composition in cereal fields. To better understand the role of landscape complexity and farming systems in shaping plant assemblages, it is of interest to focus on functional traits rather than on floristic composition, which may help to highlight trends in vegetation patterns. We analysed the relative abundance of various functional attributes (different life forms, growth forms, wind-pollinated species and wind-dispersed species) at three contrasted field positions (boundary, edge and centre) of 29 organic and 29 conventional cereal fields distributed in 15 agrarian localities of NE Spain. Agricultural intensification affected the biological attributes of the vegetation in dryland Mediterranean cereal fields; local factors (farming system and position) had a more prominent role in affecting plant functional composition than the surrounding landscape. Local factors were important for life form distribution, growth form and pollination type, whereas landscape complexity mainly affected the proportion of wind-dispersed species. Therefore, depending on the objective of the study, it is important to select functional attributes sensitive to the different scales of agricultural intensification, especially because landscape complexity and land-use intensity are commonly related.  相似文献

Levels of total suspended particles, PM10, PM2.5 and PM1 were continuously monitored at an urban kerbside in the Metropolitan area of Barcelona from June 1999 to June 2000. The results show that hourly levels of PM2.5 and PM1 are consistent with the daily cycle of gaseous pollutants emitted by traffic, whereas TSP and PM10 do not follow the same trend, at least in the diurnal period. The PM2.5/PM10 ratio is dependent on the traffic emissions, whereas additional contribution sources for the >10 μm fraction must be taken into account in the diurnal period. Different PM10 and PM2.5 source apportionment techniques were compared. A methodology based on the chemical determination of 83% of both PM10 and PM2.5 masses allowed us to quantify the marine (4% in PM10 and <1% in PM2.5), crustal (26% in PM10 and 8% in PM2.5) and anthropogenic (54% in PM10 and 73% in PM2.5) loads. Peaks of crustal contribution to PM10 (up to 44% of the PM10 mass) were recorded under Saharan air mass intrusions. A different seasonal trend was observed for levels of sulphate and nitrate, probably as a consequence of the different thermodynamic behaviour of these PM species and the higher summer oxidation rate of SO2.  相似文献

It has been studied an immature coal (leonardite) as an adsorbent for removing PAHs [fluorene, pyrene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, benzo(a)pyrene and benzo(g,h,i)perylene] from water. To determine the efficiency of leonardite as an adsorbent of PAHs, factors such as pH, contact time and equilibrium sorption were evaluated in a series of batch experiments. There were no significant differences in the removal percentages for the various pH values studied, except for fluorene. The adsorption of fluorene was higher at lower pH values. The equilibrium time was reached at 24h. At this time, more than 82% of the pyrene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, benzo(a)pyrene and benzo(g,h,i)perylene had been removed. During the first 2h, the adsorption rate increased rapidly. After that time, however, there was a minor decrease. Equilibrium data were fitted to Freundlich models to determine the water-leonardite partitioning coefficient. Physical adsorption caused by the aromatic nature of the compounds was the main mechanism that governed the removal process. The polarity of the humic substances in leonardite may also have influenced the adsorption capacity.  相似文献

Artificial lights at night cause high mortality of seabirds, one of the most endangered groups of birds globally. Fledglings of burrow‐nesting seabirds, and to a lesser extent adults, are attracted to and then grounded (i.e., forced to land) by lights when they fly at night. We reviewed the current state of knowledge of seabird attraction to light to identify information gaps and propose measures to address the problem. Although species in families such as Alcidae and Anatidae can be grounded by artificial light, the most affected seabirds are petrels and shearwaters (Procellariiformes). At least 56 species of Procellariiformes, more than one‐third of them (24) threatened, are subject to grounding by lights. Seabirds grounded by lights have been found worldwide, mainly on oceanic islands but also at some continental locations. Petrel breeding grounds confined to formerly uninhabited islands are particularly at risk from light pollution due to tourism and urban sprawl. Where it is impractical to ban external lights, rescue programs of grounded birds offer the most immediate and employed mitigation to reduce the rate of light‐induced mortality and save thousands of birds every year. These programs also provide useful information for seabird management. However, these data are typically fragmentary, biased, and uncertain and can lead to inaccurate impact estimates and poor understanding of the phenomenon of seabird attraction to lights. We believe the most urgently needed actions to mitigate and understand light‐induced mortality of seabirds are estimation of mortality and effects on populations; determination of threshold light levels and safe distances from light sources; documentation of the fate of rescued birds; improvement of rescue campaigns, particularly in terms of increasing recovery rates and level of care; and research on seabird‐friendly lights to reduce attraction.  相似文献

The EU is committed to encourage biological treatments of organic waste as an alternative to landfill and also to enhance organic matter recycling. When these wastes are composted, the composition of the initial raw materials is very important in order to obtain a good quality product. In this article, the mineral composition of the organic fraction obtained from source-sorted collection (SC) and the organic fraction mechanically separated (MS) from mass-collected municipal solid waste was evaluated. Also, the compositions of these 2 raw materials that are used in the current Spanish municipal solid waste biological treatment facilities were compared. The mineral elements analyzed were the total content of the heavy metals Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, Pb and Cd, and the plant nutrients P, K, Na, Ca, Mg, Fe and Mn. The results obtained were expressed on dry matter basis and on mineral matter basis. Important differences were detected between SC and MS samples, on both dry and mineral matter basis. In general, nutrient contents are higher in SC than in MS, and heavy metal contents are significantly lower in SC. Our results also support the idea that the heavy metal migration from the non-compostable materials to the decomposable matrix takes place from the beginning of the process while both types of materials are in contact.  相似文献

A full-scale field study was carried out at two Spanish coal-fired power plants equipped with electrostatic precipitator (ESP) and wet flue gas desulfurisation (FGD) systems to investigate the distribution of boron in coals, solid by-products, wastewater streams and flue gases. The results were obtained from the simultaneous sampling of solid, liquid and gaseous streams and their subsequent analysis in two different laboratories for purposes of comparison. Although the final aim of this study was to evaluate the partitioning of boron in a (co-)combustion power plant, special attention was paid to the analytical procedure for boron determination. A sample preparation procedure was optimised for coal and combustion by-products to overcome some specific shortcomings of the currently used acid digestion methods. In addition boron mass balances and removal efficiencies in ESP and FGD devices were calculated. Mass balance closures between 83 and 149% were obtained. During coal combustion, 95% of the incoming boron was collected in the fly ashes. The use of petroleum coke as co-combustible produced a decrease in the removal efficiency of the ESP (87%). Nevertheless, more than 90% of the remaining gaseous boron was eliminated via the FGD in the wastewater discharged from the scrubber, thereby causing environmental problems.  相似文献

Several aquatic environments have been contaminated with heavy metals dumped via industrial effluents. Numerous studies have been published regarding the removal of single metals from aqueous solutions by microalgal biomass. However, such studies do not reflect the actual problem associated with industrial effluents because usually more than one metal species is present. Here we studied the biosorption capacity of Zn2+ and Cd2+ as single- and binary-metal systems by two microalgae, Scenedesmus obliquus and Desmodesmus pleiomorphus, isolated from a polluted site in Northern Portugal. For each metal independently, D. pleiomorphus showed a higher metal sorption capacity than S. obliquus, at concentrations ranging from 60 to 300 mg/l (except 150 mgCd/l). Maximum amounts of Zn2+ and Cd2+ removed were 22.3 and 60.8 mg/g by S. obliquus, and 83.1 and 58.6 mg/g by D. pleiomorphus. In binary-metal solutions, S. obliquus was in general able to remove Zn2+ to higher extents than Cd2+, whereas the opposite was observed with D. pleiomorphus. The simultaneous uptake of Zn2+ and Cd2+ by both microalgae was considerably lower than that of their single-metal counterparts, at equivalent concentrations. Although microalgal uptake from binary-metal solutions was lower than from single-metal ones, the wild microalgae selected were able to efficiently take up mixtures of Zn2+ and Cd2+ up to 300 mg/l of both metals—thus materializing a promising bioremediation vector for polluted waters.  相似文献
