This report shows that cesium can be immobilized in soils with an efficiency of 96.4% by ball milling with nano-metallic Ca/PO4. In Japan, the major concern on 137Cs deposition and soil contamination due to the emission from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant showed up after a
massive quake on March 11, 2011. The accident rated 7, the highest possible on the international nuclear event scale, released
160 petabecquerels (PBq) of iodine 131I and 15 PBq of 137Cs according to the Japanese Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency. Both 137Cs and 131I radioactive nuclides are increasing cancer risk. Nonetheless, 137Cs, with a half-life of about 30 years compared with 8 days for 131I, is a major threat for agriculture and stock farming and, in turn, human life for decades. Therefore, in Japan, the 137Cs fixation and immobilization in contaminated soil is the most important problem, which should be solved by suitable technologies.
Ball milling treatment is a promising treatment for the remediation of cesium-contaminated soil in dry conditions. Here, we
studied the effect, factors and mechanisms of soil Cs immobilization by ball milling with the addition of nano-metallic Ca/CaO/NaH2PO4, termed “nano-metallic Ca/PO4.” We used scanning electron microscopy combined with electron dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) and X-ray diffraction. Results
show that immobilization efficiency increases from 56.4% in the absence of treatment to 89.9, 91.5, and 97.7 when the soil
is ball-milled for 30, 60 and 120 min, respectively. The addition of nano-metallic Ca/PO4 increased the immobilization efficiency to about 96.4% and decreased the ball milling time. SEM/EDS analysis allows us to
observe that the amount of Cs decreased on soil particle surface. Use of nano-metallic Ca/PO4 over a short milling time also decreases Cs leaching. Therefore, ball milling with nano-metallic Ca/PO4 treatment may be potentially applicable for the remediation of radioactive Cs-contaminated soil in dry conditions. 相似文献

Mussel bed community structure of two intertidal mytilids, Septifer virgatus (Wiegmann) and Hormomya mutabilis (Gould), whose beds were contiguous vertically on a rocky intertidal shore (Wakayama Prefecture, Japan), was compared between 1982 and 1983. In the upper S. virgatus bed, crustaceans and bivalves were dominant in terms of both number of individuals and biomass. There were three barnacle species representative of the epizoans, two isopods and one amphipod as mobile fauna, and two bivalves as infauna. The lower H. mutabilis bed supported virtually no epizoans or mobile fauna. Infaunal free-ranging polychaetes and sipunculids were dominant in terms of both number of individuals and biomass. The H. mutabilis bed contained a much greater amount of sediment than did the S. virgatus bed, and the interstices among individual H. mutabilis and among their byssal threads were filled with sediment. The biomass of six of nine species dominant in the S. virgatus bed was negatively correlated with the amount of sediment. Recruitment of these faunal assemblages into artificial mussel clumps was examined in mussel enclosure experiments, and a negative sediment effect in H. mutabilis clumps was detected for one isopod and one limpet species. Factors causing the differences between two mussel bed communities are discussed, focusing on the effects of sediment. 相似文献

Despite the enormous cost of radiation decontamination, there has been almost no quantitative discussion on how much it would reduce the long-term external radiation exposure in the Evacuation Zone and Planned Evacuation Zone (restricted zone) in Fukushima. The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of decontamination and return options and to identify important parameters for estimating the long-term cumulated effective dose (CED) during 15, 30 and 70 year period using data on land-use, population and decontamination in the restricted zone (about 1100 km2) in Fukushima. 相似文献

Between November 1982 and August 1984 diving observations of two intertidal limpets' defensive behaviours in response to two predatory species were made near the Seto Marine Biological Laboratory of Kyoto University, in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, for over 800 h. The focus of the observations was a simple isolated rock, 0.9 m2 in area with an inclination of 75°. The pulmonate homing limpet Siphonaria sirius responded by fleeing from its home in response to the whelk Thais clavigera and by calmping tightly to its home scar in response to the starfish Coscinasterias acutispina. Both behaviours were successful for avoiding predation. After a whelk moved far away, limpets returned to their homes. The patellid limpet Cellana toreuma showed mantle folding behaviour or fled for an average distance of 8 cm vertically upwards in response to the whelk and for an average distance of 21 cm vertically upwards in response to the starfish. The amount of time predators spent foraging increased in the low intertidal zone relative to the mid and high zones, and most predator attacks were observed during the limpets' resting periods (submersion in late afternoon or nighttime). The upward directional flight displayed by C. toreuma was related to the upward orientation of the limpets' heads when they are in a resting position. Half of the limpets observed fleeing downward away from a starfish, a movement elicited by a downward attack, received a second attack. These limpets were preyed upon at the second encounter 67% of the time. The upward fleeing behaviour of C. toreuma resulted in the shifting of its resting site higher up the study site where fewer attacks occurred and where the mortality rate was at its lowest. It is suggested that the homing behaviour of S. sirius and the upward fleeing behaviour of C. toreuma are mechanisms by means of which interspecific competition between limpets is reduced and coexistence on a small rock surface is maintained. 相似文献

This article reports the first identification of paraben-chlorinated derivatives in river water. Parabens are widely used as preservatives in pharmaceuticals and personal care products. Parabens can be easily chlorinated by chlorinated tap water. The resulting chlorinated derivatives might pose a higher potential risk to humans and ecosystems than the corresponding parent parabens. However, the occurrence of such derivatives in rivers remains unknown so far. We studied 23 parabens and their chlorinated derivatives from rivers receiving effluents from sewage treatment plants in Shizuoka city, in the central Pacific region of Japan. The compounds were extracted by solid-phase extraction with a styrene polymer sorbent, trimethylsilyl-derivatized, and then identified by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Six chlorinated parabens and their primary degradation products, two chlorinated hydroxybenzoic acids, were found for the first time in river water. Moreover, in river water, chlorinated derivatives preferentially partition into the suspended-solid phase. 相似文献

This study assessed pesticide residues in soils, sediments, and vegetables in the Xuan Khe and Hop Ly communes located along the Chau Giang River in the Red River Delta, northern Vietnam. Samples were collected from agricultural areas within and outside of embankments built to prevent flooding. In Xuan Khe, the soils outside of the embankment were more clayey with higher organic matter contents compared with the inside, due to selective deposition during river flooding. Many of the soils contained significant amounts of pesticides including dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), dicofol, isoprothiolane, and metalaxyl although their levels were below the maximum allowable concentration set by the Vietnamese government. The spectrum of DDT derivatives found suggested that the source of DDTs was not contaminated dicofol. Soils in Hop Ly resembled soils in Xuan Khe but were relatively sandy; one field showed appreciable contents of DDT derivatives. The ratios of (p,p ′-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene + p,p ′-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane)/∑DDT in the surface and subsurface soils in Hop Ly were 0.34 and 0.57, suggesting that the DDTs originated from recent application. Pesticide residues in soils were not likely to translocate into vegetable crops, except for metalaxyl. High concentrations of cypermethrins in kohlrabi leaves could be ascribed to foliar deposition. 相似文献

This report shows that soil heavy metals can be totally immobilized by grinding with nano-Fe/Ca/CaO. Remediation of soils contaminated by heavy metals is a critical issue in Japan. Indeed, contaminated soils are notoriously difficult to remediate using available technologies. Major setbacks in typical immobilization techniques for heavy metals are wet conditions, forming secondary effluents and further treatment for effluents. Solidification with nano-Fe/Ca/CaO dispersion mixture is a promising treatment for the total immobilization of soil heavy metals As, Cd, Cr, Pb, and separation in dry conditions. Here, we studied the heavy metal immobilization by simple grinding with the addition of three mixtures: nano-Fe/CaO, nano-Fe/Ca/CaO, and nano-Fe/Ca/CaO/PO4. Samples were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) and scanning electron microscopy combined with electron dispersive spectroscopy (SEM–EDS). Results show that the addition of nano-Fe/Ca/CaO immobilized 95–99 % of heavy metals, versus 65–80 % by simple grinding. After treatment, 36–45 wt% of magnetic and 64–55 wt% of nonmagnetic fractions of soil were separated. Their condensed heavy metal concentration was 85–95 % and 10–20 %, respectively. Nano-Fe/Ca/CaO treatment reduced the concentration of leachates heavy metals to values lower than the Japan soil elution standard regulatory threshold of 0.01 mg/l for As, Cd, and Pb; and 0.05 mg/l for Cr. This technology can therefore immobilize totally soil heavy metals and reduce heavy metal by separation. 相似文献

Enhanced heavy metal immobilization in soil by grinding with addition of nanometallic Ca/CaO dispersion mixture 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
This study investigated the use of a nanometallic Ca and CaO dispersion mixture for the immobilization of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr and Pb) in contaminated soil. Simple grinding achieved 85-90% heavy metal immobilization, but it can be enhanced further to 98-100% by addition of a nanometallic Ca/CaO dispersion mixture produced by grinding. Observations using SEM-EDS elemental maps and semi-quantitative analysis showed that the amounts of As, Cd, Cr, and Pb measurable on the soil particle surface decrease after nanometallic Ca/CaO treatment. The leachable heavy metal concentrations were reduced after nanometallic Ca/CaO treatment to concentrations lower than the Japan soil elution standard regulatory threshold: <0.01 mg L−1 for As, Cd, and Pb; and 0.05 mg L−1 for Cr. Effects of soil moisture and pH on heavy metal immobilization were not strongly influenced. The most probable mechanisms for the enhancement of heavy metal immobilization capacity with nanometallic Ca/CaO treatment might be due to adsorption and entrapment of heavy metals into newly formed aggregates, thereby prompting aggregation of soil particles and enclosure/binding with Ca/CaO-associated immobile salts. Results suggest that the nanometallic Ca/CaO mixture is suitable for use in immobilization of heavy-metal-contaminated soil under normal moisture conditions. 相似文献

Goal, Scope and Background Cadavers for gross anatomy laboratories are usually prepared by using embalming fluid which contains formaldehyde (FA) as
a principal component. During the process of dissection, FA vapors are emitted from the cadavers, resulting in the exposure
of medical students and their instructors to elevated levels of FA in the laboratory. The American Conference of Governmental
Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) has set a ceiling limit for FA at 0.3 ppm. In Japan, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare
has set an air quality guideline defining two limit values for environmental exposure to FA: 0.08 ppm as an average for general
workplaces and 0.25 ppm for specific workplaces such as an FA factory. Although there are many reports on indoor FA concentrations
in gross anatomy laboratories, only a few reports have described personal FA exposure levels. The purpose of the present study
was to clarify personal exposure levels as well as indoor FA concentrations in our laboratory in order to investigate the
relationship between them.
Methods The gross anatomy laboratory was evaluated in the 4th, 10th and 18th sessions of 20 laboratory sessions in total over a period
of 10 weeks. Air samples were collected using a diffusive sampling device for organic carbonyl compounds. Area samples were
taken in the center and four corners of the laboratory during the entire time of each session (4-6 hours). Personal samples
were collected from instructors and students using a sampling device pinned on each person's lapel, and they were 1.1 to 6
hours in duration. Analysis was carried out using high performance liquid chromatography.
Results and Discussion Room averages of FA concentrations were 0.45, 0.38 and 0.68 ppm for the 4th, 10th and 18th sessions, respectively, ranging
from 0.23 to 1.03 ppm. These levels were comparable to or relatively lower than the levels reported previously, but were still
higher than the guideline limit for specific workplaces in Japan and the ACGIH ceiling limit. The indoor FA concentrations
varied depending on the contents of laboratory sessions and seemed to increase when body cavity or deep structures were being
dissected. In all sessions but the 4th, FA levels at the center of the room were higher than those in the corners. This might
be related to the arrangement of air supply diffusers and return grills. However, it cannot be ruled out that FA levels in
the corners were lowered by leakage of FA through the doors and windows. Average personal exposure levels were 0.80, 0.45
and 0.51 ppm for instructors and 1.02, 1.08 and 0.89 ppm for students for the 4th, 10th and 18th session, respectively. The
exposure levels of students were significantly higher than the mean indoor FA concentrations in the 4th and 10th sessions,
and the same tendency was also observed in the 18th session. The personal exposure level of instructors was also significantly
higher than the indoor FA level in the 4th session, while they were almost the same in the 10th and 18th sessions. Differences
in behavior during the sessions might reflect the differential personal exposure levels between students and instructors.
Conclusion The present study revealed that, if a person is close to the cadavers during the gross anatomy laboratory, his/her personal
exposure level is possibly 2 to 3-fold higher than the mean indoor FA concentration. This should be considered in the risk
assessment of FA in gross anatomy laboratories.
Recommendation and Outlook If the risk of FA in gross anatomy laboratories is assessed based on the indoor FA levels, the possibility that personal
exposure levels are 2 to 3-fold higher than the mean indoor FA level should be taken into account. Otherwise, the risk should
be assessed based on the personal exposure levels. However, it is hard to measure everyone's exposure level. Therefore, further
studies are necessary to develop a method of personal exposure assessment from the indoor FA concentration. 相似文献
