Degradation of ethinyl estradiol by nitrifying activated sludge   总被引:26,自引:0,他引:26
Degradation of ethinyl estradiol (EE2) by nitrifying activated sludge was studied with micro-organisms grown in a reactor with feedback of sludge fed with only a mineral salts medium containing ammonium as the sole energy source. Ammonium was oxidised by this sludge at a rate of 50 mg NH4+ g(-1) DW h(-1). This activated sludge was also capable of degrading EE2 at a maximum rate of 1 microg g(-1) DW h(-1). Using sludge with an insignificant nitrifying capacity of 1 mg NH4+ g(-1) DW h(-1), no degradation of EE2 was detected. Oxidation of EE2 by nitrifying sludge resulted in the formation of hydrophilic compounds, which were not further identified. Most probably degradation by nitrifying sludge results in a loss of estrogenic activity, as hydroxylated derivatives of EE2 are known to have a substantially lower pharmacological activity than EE2.  相似文献

Dairy farms comprise a complex landscape of groundwater pollution sources. The objective of our work is to develop a method to quantify nitrate leaching to shallow groundwater from different management units at dairy farms. Total nitrate loads are determined by the sequential calibration of a sub-regional scale and a farm-scale three-dimensional groundwater flow and transport model using observations at different spatial scales. These observations include local measurements of groundwater heads and nitrate concentrations in an extensive monitoring well network, providing data at a scale of a few meters and measurements of discharge rates and nitrate concentrations in a tile-drain network, providing data integrated across multiple farms. The various measurement scales are different from the spatial scales of the calibration parameters, which are the recharge and nitrogen leaching rates from individual management units. The calibration procedure offers a conceptual framework for using field measurements at different spatial scales to estimate recharge N concentrations at the management unit scale. It provides a map of spatially varying dairy farming impact on groundwater nitrogen. The method is applied to a dairy farm located in a relatively vulnerable hydrogeologic region in California. Potential sources within the dairy farm are divided into three categories, representing different manure management units: animal exercise yards and feeding areas (corrals), liquid manure holding ponds, and manure irrigated forage fields. Estimated average nitrogen leaching is 872 kg/ha/year, 807 kg/ha/year and 486 kg/ha/year for corrals, ponds and fields respectively. Results are applied to evaluate the accuracy of nitrogen mass balances often used by regulatory agencies to assess groundwater impacts. Calibrated leaching rates compare favorably to field and farm scale nitrogen mass balances. These data and interpretations provide a basis for developing improved management strategies.  相似文献

Management of river basins involves the making of informed choices about the desired levels of economic activities and ecosystem functioning in the catchment. Information on the economic and ecological effects of measures as well as their spatial distribution is therefore needed. This paper proposes the following instruments to support decision-making in river basins: (1) the linking of models and indicators to describe the economic and ecological effects of management actions and their spatial distribution and (2) an extended evaluation framework that aims to evaluate management actions on three objectives for sustainable river management. These are cost-effectiveness, spatial equity, and environmental quality. This paper illustrates the potential of these instruments for river basin management by a case-study on nutrient management in the Rhine basin. In this case-study four nutrient abatement strategies are formulated, based on policies of the International Commission for the Protection of the Rhine and the North Sea Commission. These strategies are analysed and evaluated on their contribution to the three management objectives. Results show that none of these strategies score highest on cost-effectiveness, spatial equity and environmental quality simultaneously. It appears that cost-effectiveness is in conflict with environmental quality, whereas spatial equity and cost-effectiveness show quite close correspondence. This means that a trade-off has to be made between costs and spatial equity on the one hand, and environmental standards on the other hand. This paper offers a framework to make these trade-offs more explicit and provides quantitative information on cause-effect relationships, economic and environmental effects and the spatial distribution of these effects for various management strategies. This information can be particularly useful in the development of compromises required to establish international agreement and co-operation.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Water resource management in West Africa is often a complicated process due to inadequate resources, climatic extremes, and insufficient hydrological information. Insufficient data hinder sustainable watershed management practices, one of the top priorities in the Volta River Basin. This research properly fills in missing data by modeling the hydrological distribution in the Volta River Basin. On average, discharge gages across the basin are missing 20 percent of their monthly data over 20 years. Two methods were used to supplement missing data: a statistically linear model and a conceptual hydrological model. A linear equation, developed from the regression of precipitation and runoff, was used to evaluate the quality of existing data. The hydrological model separates the system into root and groundwater zones. Measured values were used to calibrate the hydrological model and to validate the statistical model. The quality of existing data was analyzed and organized for usability. Accuracy of the hydrological model was also evaluated for its effectiveness using R2 and standard error. It was found that the hydrological model was an improvement from the linear model on a monthly basis; R2 values improved by as much as 0.5 and monthly error decreased. Monthly predictions of the hydrological model were used to fill gaps of measured data sets.  相似文献

Gender aspects in the management of water   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Water resources increasingly need to meet the demands and needs of different sectors and to be protected against deteriorating quantity and quality. This paper discusses the different interests of men and women in the use of water resources, and what effects the neglect of female interests in particular, has on development. The authors stress that besides class and ethnic differences, the different interests of men and women also play a role in the cross-sectoral management of water resources. Water pricing, property rights and management structures are three key aspects where a gender approach is required. In the management of water resources in smaller catchment areas, several instruments for a gender approach have been developed. Discussed are gender specific participatory research, planning and tools, gender in management organizations and task divisions and involvement of multidisciplinary teams with a gender orientation.  相似文献

This paper presents results of an experimental study into factors contributing to decay of odor samples during storage, between 4 and 40 hr after sample collection. The odor studied was sampled from a tobacco processing plant as part of collaborative research with a view to establishing a manual outlining methods for odor annoyance management, specifically for the tobacco industry. In August and September 1997, an experimental program was carried out in which two types of tobacco odor were sampled: Burley Toaster and Mix. The dependent variable was odor concentration in the bag, measured by dynamic olfactometry in accordance with the draft Comité Européen de Normalisation (CEN) standard EN13725 "Air Quality-Determination of Odor Concentration by Dynamic Olfactometry." The independent variables were sampling bag material, degree of dilution during sampling, dilution gas used, particle removal during sampling, and age of sample in hours. In the first phase, 94 odor analyses were carried out. In a second test, 32 samples were analyzed for odor concentration. In addition, 16 samples were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Analysis of the results (analysis of variance) led to the unexpected conclusion that Nalophan film bags performed significantly better than metalized Cali-Bond layered film as a bag material. The odor concentration of samples in Nalophan bags remained relatively stable between 4 and 12 hr after sampling. After 30 hr, decay to about half the initial concentration, as measured at 4 hr, was observed. Particle removal during sampling caused the odor concentration in the bags to be reduced by approximately 20%. For practical reasons, particle removal remains useful, to avoid contamination of equipment. Using air or nitrogen as the neutral gas for pre-dilution during sampling or the dilution factor used (between factor 2 and 6) did not appear to have an effect on the decay characteristic of odor samples. The following recommendations are suggested for the practice of collecting odor samples and apply specifically to tobacco processing emissions: Analyze samples as soon as possible, preferably within 12 hr; When samples age for more than 12 hr, decay is likely to cause a reduction in odor concentration to half the original concentration at age 30 hr; Use sampling bags made of Nalophan NA or benchmark performance of other materials against Nalophan NA before using alternative materials; Use pre-dilution when sampling only for the purpose of avoiding condensation during sample storage. Use an appropriate minimum dilution factor to avoid condensation; Both nitrogen and high-purity (synthetic) air are suitable to use as neutral gas for pre-dilution; and When sampling tobacco odors, use an odorless filter to remove particles. This practice removes a source of variation and avoids contamination of equipment. The effect on results, despite being consistently lower in odor concentration, is not meaningful in terms of perceived intensity or annoyance potential.  相似文献

Atrazine (6-chloro-N2-ethyl-N4-isopropyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine) and metolachlor [2-chloro-N-(2-ethyl-6-methylphenyl)-N-(2-methoxy-1-methylethyl)acetamide] have been found with increasing occurrence in rivers and streams. Their continued use will require changes in agricultural practices. We compared water quality from four crop-tillage treatments: (i) conventional moldboard plow (MB), (ii) MB with ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) intercrop (IC), (iii) soil saver (SS), and (iv) SS + IC; and two drainage control treatments, drained (D) and controlled drainage-subirrigation (CDS). Atrazine (1.1 kg a.i. ha-1), metribuzin [4-amino-6-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-3-(methylthio)-1,2,4-triazine-5(4H)-one] (0.5 kg a.i. ha-1), and metolachlor (1.68 kg a.i. ha-1) were applied preemergence in a band over seeded corn (Zea mays L.) rows. Herbicide concentration and losses were monitored from 1992 to spring 1995. Annual herbicide losses ranged from < 0.3 to 2.7% of application. Crop-tillage treatment influenced herbicide loss in 1992 but not in 1993 or 1994, whereas CDS affected partitioning of losses in most years. In 1992, SS + IC reduced herbicide loss in tile drains and surface runoff by 46 to 49% compared with MB. The intercrop reduced surface runoff, which reduced herbicide transport. Controlled drainage-subirrigation increased herbicide loss in surface runoff but decreased loss through tile drainage so that total herbicide loss did not differ between drainage treatments. Desethyl atrazine [6-chloro-N-(1-methylethyl)-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine] comprised 7 to 39% of the total triazine loss.  相似文献

Modern environmental policy implementation in many developed countries is increasingly regionally oriented. Regional governments have undertaken measures designed for the specific needs of the region but, so far, the resulting change in environmental quality has hardly been monitored. This study develops a method for the quantitative evaluation of region-specific environmental policy. Two forms of monitoring are distinguished: monitoring of performance of policy measures and monitoring of environmental quality. This study investigates two regions in the Netherlands where region-specific policy has been implemented. Performance monitoring focused on reduction of nitrate leaching to groundwater. Leaching reductions were calculated with simple models or rules of thumb. Quality monitoring focused on nitrate concentrations under grassland and other land use. An analysis of variance showed significant differences between different soil units. Stratified kriging was applied for spatial interpolation, showing within-unit variability. The current monitoring network could be improved by using a more regular type of grid.  相似文献
