Unsaturated- and saturated-zone field studies were conducted under two different agricultural conditions in Florida, U.S.A., to measure the movement and degradation of ethoprop.When ethoprop was applied to a sand soil in an orange grove located on the Florida central ridge, soil residues declined with a half-life of 13 days to near the limit of detection (0.01 μg g−1 within 2 months. Ethoprop residues were generally contained in the upper 2 m of soil. Although low levels of ethoprop were found in four groundwater samples within the first 3 months after application, the cause of these isolated and transient residues could not be determined. The data show that there was no widespread plume of ethoprop residues beneath or downgradient from the treated area.On a flatwood soil on the west coast of Florida, ethoprop was incorporated into raised beds and protected by a plastic mulch in which tomatoes were grown. When the plastic mulch was present, ethoprop soil residues declined with a half-life of 40 days and were confined to the upper 0.3 m of soil. After the mulch was removed at crop harvest, the remaining ethoprop dissipated with a half-life of 12 days. Groundwater residues in excess of 1 μg L−1 were confined to a single sample collected after the well had been damaged during a rototilling operation. Resides of < 1 μg L−1 were present in three later samples from this well. At the sampling interval where the highest residues were detected in the damaged well, ethoprop residues of < 1 μg L−1 were also found in three other wells but no residues were detected in these wells in later samples. 相似文献

The concept of “Environmental Hazard Profile” developed at this institute has been tested with 100 14C-labelled organic compounds. Concentration factors in activated sludge, in algae and fish were determined. The microbial degradation of the chemicals to CO2 in activated sludge and the decomposition to CO2 under artificial light were determined. Ranking of compounds is given in the order of falling concentration factors and accumulation in rats respectively, and decreasing rates of decomposition. Relationship between chemical structure and accumulative and degradative behaviours is demonstrated using some selected groups of chemicals, such as benzenes, phenols, biphenyls and polyaromatic hydrocarbons. Correlations between the octanol/water partition coefficient, concentration factors and rates of decomposition could be established. A permanent solution in order to remediate a heavily contaminated soil is washing it utilizing the appropriate reagents. The study presented in this paper deals with the washing of a soil highly polluted by mining and metallurgical activities. Pollution consists of slags, sulphur compound waste and various low grade lead condensates, all rich in heavy metals and metalloids (Pb, As, Cu, Zn, Mn and Fe). Soil was washed with deionized water, 6, 3, 2 and 1 M HCl, 6 M H(2)SO(4), 6 M HNO(3) and 0.1 M Na(2)EDTA. High extraction efficiency was achieved with respect to hydrochloric acid even at the lowest concentration; the solubility of pollutants in nitric acid was low, while sulphuric acid was proven to be problematic with respect to lead. Mobilization of metals and metalloids under DI water effect was minimal indicating that the elements fraction that is weakly bound to soil particles is insignificant. Furthermore, a kinetic study was undertaken, utilizing 1 M HCl and 0.1 M Na(2)EDTA. Results illustrated that 1 M HCl was more effective for intermediate mixing times (up to 4 h) while 0.1 M Na(2)EDTA was better applicable to short mixing times (<1 h) and low pH values (pH < 7.1). 1 M HCl was proven to be very effective for the removal of pollutants from contaminated soil but the high metal content of the resulting solution necessitates further treatment for the retention of metals. 相似文献

In order to evaluate blood levels of some perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) and compare them to current levels of classical persistent organic pollutants (POPs) whole blood samples from Sweden were analyzed with respect to 12 PFCs, 37 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), p,p'-dichlorodiphenyl-dichloroethylene (DDE), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), six chlordanes and three polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The median concentration, on whole blood basis, of the sum of PFCs was 20-50 times higher compared to the sum of PCBs and p,p'-DDE, 300-450 times higher than HCB, sum of chlordanes and sum of PBDEs. Estimations of the total body amount of PFCs and lipophilic POPs point at similar body burdens. While levels of for example PCBs and PBDEs are normalized to the lipid content of blood, there is no such general procedure for PFCs in blood. The distributions of a number of perfluorinated compounds between whole blood and plasma were therefore studied. Plasma concentrations were higher than whole blood concentrations for four perfluoroalkylated acids with plasma/whole blood ratios between 1.1 and 1.4, whereas the ratio for perflurooctanesulfonamide (PFOSA) was considerably lower (0.2). This suggests that the comparison of levels of PFCs determined in plasma with levels determined in whole blood should be made with caution. We also conclude that Swedish residents are exposed to a large number of PFCs to the same extent as in USA, Japan, Colombia and the few other countries from which data is available today. 相似文献

Nationwide monitoring of polychlorinated biphenyls and organochlorine pesticides in sediments from coastal environment of Korea 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
To assess the organochlorine contamination in the Korean marine environment, a nationwide monitoring study was conducted. A total of 138 surface sediments, covering the whole Korean coast, were collected and analyzed. Organochlorine compounds (OCs) were widely distributed in the Korean coastal environment, with PCB and DDT contamination being particularly prevalent. The overall concentrations of PCBs, DDTs, HCHs, CHLs, and HCB in surface sediments were in the range of 0.088-199ngg(-1) (median value: 1.56ngg(-1)), 0.006-135ngg(-1) (0.68ngg(-1)), not detected (ND)-5.46ngg(-1) (0.32ngg(-1)), ND-3.26ngg(-1) (0.14ngg(-1)), and ND-2.59ngg(-1) (0.05ngg(-1)), respectively. The southeastern coast was found to be highly contaminated. Overall contamination status of Korean coastal sediments with regard to OCs is lower than that of USA. With the exception of highly industrialized sites, Korean coastal areas in general showed similar OC concentrations to those of other Asian countries. There was a significant correlation between distributions of most organochlorine contaminants with each other. OC contamination is closely related to shipping and industrial activities. Of the 7 sites categorized as highly polluted, 4 are in a harbor zone. Adverse effects to benthic communities are expected at the levels of OC contamination observed from harbor and industrial areas. 相似文献

Methods for the preparation of a biodesulfurization biocatalyst using Rhodococcus sp 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Several methods to prepare a biodesulfurization (BDS) biocatalyst were investigated in this study using a strain of Rhodococcus sp. 1awq. This bacterium could selectively remove sulfur from dibenzothiophene (DBT) via the "4S" pathway. DBT, dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), sodium sulphate and mixed sulfur sources were used to study their influence on cell density, desulfurization activity, desulfurization ability, and the cost of biocatalyst production. In contrast to that observed from bacteria cultured in DBT, only partial desulfurization activity of strain 1awq was induced by DBT after cultivation in a medium containing inorganic sulfur as the sole sulfur source. The biocatalyst, prepared from culture with mixed sulfur sources, was found to possess desulfurization activity. With DMSO as the sole sulfur source, the desulfurization activity was shown to be similar to that of bacteria incubated in medium with DBT as the sole sulfur source. The biocatalyst prepared by this method with the least cost could remove sulfur from hydrodesulfurization (HDS)-treated diesel oil efficiently, providing a total desulfurization percent of 78% and suggesting its cost-effective advantage. 相似文献

This paper is particularly related to elemental mercury (Hg0) oxidation and divalent mercury (Hg2+) reduction under simulated flue gas conditions in the presence of nitric oxide (NO) and sulfur dioxide (SO2). As a powerful oxidant and chlorinating reagent, Cl2 has the potential for Hg oxidation. However, the detailed mechanism for the interactions, especially among chlorine (Cl)-containing species, SO2, NO, as well as H2O, remains ambiguous. Research described in this paper therefore focused on the impacts of SO2 and NO on Hg0 oxidation and Hg2+ reduction with the intent of unraveling unrecognized interactions among Cl species, SO2, and NO most importantly in the presence of H2O. The experimental results demonstrated that SO2 and NO had pronounced inhibitory effects on Hg0 oxidation at high temperatures when H2O was also present in the gas blend. Such a demonstration was further confirmed by the reduction of Hg2+ back into its elemental form. Data revealed that SO2 and NO were capable of promoting homogeneous reduction of Hg2+ to Hg0 with H2O being present. However, the above inhibition or promotion disappeared under homogeneous conditions when H2O was removed from the gas blend. 相似文献

Metal contaminants in garden and allotment soils could possibly affect human health through a variety of pathways. This study focused on the potential pathway of consumption of vegetables grown on contaminated soil. Five cultivars each of six common vegetables were grown in a control and in a soil spiked with Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn. Highly significant differences in metal content were evident between cultivars of a number of vegetables for several of the contaminants. Carrot and pea cultivars exhibited significant differences in accumulated concentrations of Cd and Cu with carrot cultivars also exhibiting significant differences in Zn. Distinctive differences were also identified when comparing one vegetable to another, legumes (Leguminosae) tending to be low accumulators, root vegetables (Umbelliferae and Liliaceae) tending to be moderate accumulators and leafy vegetables (Compositae and Chenopodiaceae) being high accumulators. 相似文献
