A model has been developed to assess the rate of evaporation of chemical compounds from surface waters. It is based on the two-boundary-layer model of Lewis and Whitman, on critically evaluated literature data and on specific experiments. The rate of evaporation is assessed as a function of the diffusion coefficient in air and water and of Henry's coefficient in water, being the physico-chemical parameters, and as a function of the wind speed, the water temperature and the water depth, being the environmental parameters.  相似文献

The photochemical formation of singlet oxygen in some Dutch surface waters has been investigated using the method developed by Zepp (1). However, when monitoring the consumption of oxygen beside that of 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), the compound added to chemically snare singlet oxygen, it was found that appreciable, but varying parts of DMF were used up by secondary reactions leading largely to the same products, viz. cis- and trans-diacetylethylene. When taking the oxygen consumption as a measure for the singlet oxygen production on the basis of the stoichiometry of the primary reaction, a fair correlation between the singlet oxygen production and the total organic carbon (TOC) content was found for this selection of Dutch surface water samples. The steady-state concentrations of singlet oxygen determined in this way were about one order of magnitude lower than those found by Zepp (1) and by Zafiriou (2).  相似文献

The results of microbial toxicity tests are needed for the risk assessment of polluted sediments. In comparison with animals the anaerobic microorganisms are more tolerant to natural sediment conditions whereas they are more sensitive for a number of specific pollutants. Microbial toxicity tests from a literature search were classified in seven categories. Category A, B and C use polluted sediments and are applied for sediment monitoring. In category D, a pure chemical is added and the organisms and the test conditions were derived from sediment. Therefore this category can be used for setting sediment quality guidelines which protect sediment functions for the toxic effects of chemicals. In category E, organisms from a polluted site are separated from the sediment and are tested with pure chemicals. Organisms from a more polluted site can be more tolerant to a local pollutant. This is called pollution-induced community tolerance and can be used as evidence for the occurrence of toxic effects in a specific sediment. In category F pure chemicals are tested with a pure culture of microorganisms under sediment conditions. The results of category F tests can be combined with single species tests with animals and plants to obtain sediment quality guidelines sufficient for species protection. This can be compared with the sediment quality guidelines which protect sediment functions. When one of these quality guidelines is exceeded for a compound at a specific location a category E test can be used to determine whether the compound shows toxic effects in that sediment.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to determine the kinetics and relative importance of aqueous and dietary uptake of cadmium by the freshwater isopod Asellus aquaticus (L.). Test animals were exposed during 30 days to aqueous Cd in a continuous flow system (exposure levels: 0.2 - 10 microg litre(-1)) and kept on a diet of previously contaminated Elodea sp. (range of Cd concentrations: 2-350 microg g(-1), dry weight). Preceding semi-static experiments on dosage-control of the dietary factor revealed a rapid uptake of Cd by Elodea, with relatively high concentration factors (CF), which ranged from 4.8 to 5.5 (dry weight log (CF) after 16 days). For Asellus uptake from water appeared to be the predominant route. Highly significant bioconcentration of cadmium from water was observed in the animals, even at exposure levels below 1.0 microg litre(-1). In the various treatments, direct uptake from water accounted for 50-98% of the body burdens after 30 days exposure. The experimental results were described with a first order one-compartment bioaccumulation model. Model parameter estimates (mean +/- standard error) were obtained for rate constant of uptake (560 +/- 110 day(-1)), rate constant of elimination (0.032 +/- 0.017 day(-1)) and assimilation efficiency of Cd uptake from food (1.1 +/- 0.7%). The (dry weight) bioconcentration factor (BCF) and bioaccumulation factor (BAF) for extrapolated steady state conditions were estimated at 18 000 (BCF) and 0.08 (BAF). Experiments conducted at two different pH levels (5.9 versus 7.6) revealed no significant effects of pH on the uptake of aqueous Cd by the isopods. The results are discussed in relation to their potential significance to the field situation.  相似文献

Volatile organic compounds are widely introduced into the Dutch aquatic environment. Liquid-liquid extraction and isolation by means of resins give poor recoveries for volatiles. In this study, a method has been developed to analyse these compounds with a purge and trap injection (PTI) coupled to a chromatograph/ion trap mass spectrometer. Volatile compounds are "purged" from the sample by carrier gas flow and transported through a condenser to a cooled trap. The bulk of liquid matrix is condensed in the condenser, while volatile compounds are left unaffected. The compounds of interest are trapped at a low temperature, by liquid nitrogen in the cooled trap of fused silica. Injection takes place by flash heating of the trap. The detection limits of the volatile compounds are in the range of 0.001-0.04 microgram l-1, in full spectrum mode. In this paper a review of the results in Dutch surface water of the Rhine, Meuse, Northern Delta Area and Westerscheldt, over the period 1992-1997, is presented. For calamities causing high levels of volatiles, the method is very useful. The compounds can be monitored over a certain period. In the Meuse, high levels of volatile organic compounds are observed. Diisopropyl ether at a maximum of 592 micrograms l-1.  相似文献

The fatty acid composition of 9 different tissues and organs of the female horseshoe crab Xiphosura (Limulus) polyphemus — one of the very few recent representatives of the ancient arthropod class Merostomata — was investigated in reference to the distribution of fatty acids through the marine food web. Fatty acid spectra, in which polyunsaturated fatty acids are predominant, especially eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5 3), revealed features characteristic of marine lipids. However, rather large quantities of monoenoic fatty acids also occur in all organs. In the saturated fatty acid fractions, the high content of branched-chain components is worth noticing, particularly in the gills and the carapace (35%); in all probability, the high amount of the branched-chain fatty acids is associated with their protective function in surface lipids. Isoprenoid fatty acids such as pristanic and phytanic acid were absent.  相似文献

Honeybee queens (Apis mellifera) show extreme levels of polyandry, but the evolutionary mechanisms underlying this behaviour are still unclear. The sperm-limitation hypothesis, which assumes that high levels of polyandry are essential to get a lifetime sperm supply for large and long-lived colonies, has been widely disregarded for honeybees because the semen of a single male is, in principle, sufficient to fill the spermatheca of a queen. However, the inefficient post-mating sperm transfer from the queens lateral oviducts into the spermatheca requires multiple matings to ensure an adequate spermatheca filling. Males of the African honeybee subspecies A. m. capensis have fewer sperm than males of the European subspecies A. m. carnica. Thus, given that sperm limitation is a cause for the evolution of multiple mating in A. mellifera, we would expect A. m. capensis queens to have higher mating frequencies than A. m. carnica. Here we show that A. m. capensis queens indeed exhibit significantly higher mating frequencies than queens of A. m. carnica, both in their native ranges and in an experiment on a North Sea island under the same environmental conditions. We conclude that honeybee queens try to achieve a minimum number of matings on their mating flights to ensure a sufficient lifetime sperm supply. It thus seems premature to reject the sperm-limitation hypothesis as a concept explaining the evolution of extreme polyandry in honeybees.Communicated by R.E. Page  相似文献
