Conclusions Whereas old coal tips were looked on in the past as constituting large reserves of energy resources, these very tips have today acquired a new ecological value, and because of their biological worth, or because of the fact that they improve the landscape, these considerations ought to supersede the old concept. Of course, the ecological and economic features can be said to be related when the biomass found on coal tips can be used economically.We can rightly say that the environmental impact of the coal extracting industry has left features that will remain whatever they may be: old coal tips, that give us much biological information; subsidence that has made lakes where so many bird varieties can be found; and also those mining sites, whether they are reclaimed and restored or not. All these features of today bear witness to the life and work of many generations.  相似文献

Detailed information is presented on the changes in lipid-class profiles (polar lipids, total neutral lipids, free sterols, steryl esters, triacylglycerols, neutral ether lipids and free fatty acids), which are manifest during the annual reproductive cycle of the seastarAsterias rubens for both the storage organs (pyloric caeca) and utilizing organs (ovaries). The ovaries appear to accumulate all individual lipid components proportional to progression of vitellogenesis. Pyloric caeca, in contrast, show variable lipid-class levels, probably due to more complex processes in these organs, operating simultaneously: digestion of food, accumulation of storage lipids, mobilization of stored lipids and their release. The results are discussed in terms of current knowledge on the role of lipids in echinoderm reproduction.  相似文献

Summary We show how mate limitation appears to be critical in determining whether or not males exercise mate choice among available females. Thalassoma bifasciatum is a Caribbean reef fish with two distinct mating patterns: group-spawning and pair-spawning. In both mating systems, female fecundity is variable and size dependent, and female availability is high. However, sperm competition among group-spawning males apparently limits the number of effective matings in which a male may engage, whereas territorial pair-spawning males have little or no such limitation. Group-spawning males should be discriminating in their choice of mates and our data confirm this: there is strong evidence for assortative mating in group-spawns, with more large males joining in mating groups around large females. In contrast, pair-spawning males show no indication of mate preferences, and spawn with all females who arrive at their territories.  相似文献

We studied the impact of livestock grazing on the distribution ofBranta bernicla bernicla (Dark-bellied Brent goose) in the Dutch Wadden Sea during spring. It was hypothesized that livestock facilitate short-term (within-season) grazing for geese as well as long-term (over years). Therefore we measured grazing pressure by geese in salt marsh and polder areas that were either grazed (spring-grazed) or ungrazed during spring (summer-grazed). Additionally, we carried out a preference experiment with captive geese to test the preference between spring-grazed and summer-grazed polder swards. We furthermore compared patterns of use by geese between long-term ungrazed and grazed salt marshes. In May, there is a difference in grazing pressure by geese between polder pastures that are grazed or ungrazed during spring. In this month, the ungrazed polder pastures are abandoned and the geese shift to either the grazed polder pastures or to the salt marsh. Vegetation in the polder that had been spring-grazed had a lower canopy height and a higher tiller density than summer-grazed vegetation. The captive geese in the preference experiment showed a clear preference for vegetation that had been spring-grazed by sheep over ungrazed vegetation. Goose grazing pressure was negatively correlated to canopy height, both on the polder and on the salt marsh. Within the plant communities dominated byFestuca rubra andPuccinellia maritima, marshes that were intensively grazed by livestock generally had higher grazing pressure by geese than long-term ungrazed or lightly grazed salt marshes.  相似文献

Sagitta elegans and S. setosa are the two dominant chaetognaths in the North-East (NE) Atlantic. They are closely related and have a similar ecology and life history, but differ in distributional ranges. Sagitta setosa is a typical neritic species occurring exclusively above shelf regions, whereas S. elegans is a more oceanic species with a widespread distribution. We hypothesised that neritic species, because of smaller and more fragmented populations, would have been more vulnerable to population bottlenecks resulting from range contractions during Pleistocene glaciations than oceanic species. To test this hypothesis we compared mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase II DNA sequences of S. elegans and S. setosa from sampling locations across the NE Atlantic. Both species displayed very high levels of genetic diversity with unique haplotypes for every sequenced individual and an approximately three times higher level of nucleotide diversity in S. elegans (0.061) compared to S. setosa (0.021). Sagitta setosa mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) haplotypes produced a star-like phylogeny and a uni-modal mismatch distribution indicative of a bottleneck followed by population expansion. In contrast, S. elegans had a deeper mtDNA phylogeny and a multi-modal mismatch distribution as would be expected from a more stable population. Neutrality tests indicated that assumptions of the standard neutral model were violated for both species and results from the McDonald-Kreitman test suggested that selection played a role in the evolution of their mitochondrial DNA. Congruent with these results, both species had much smaller effective population sizes estimated from genetic data when compared to census population sizes estimated from abundance data, with a factor of ~108–109 difference. Assuming that selective effects are comparable for the two species, we conclude that the difference in genetic signature can only be explained by contrasting demographic histories. Our data are consistent with the hypothesis that in the NE Atlantic, the neritic S. setosa has been more severely affected by population bottlenecks resulting from Pleistocene range shifts than the more oceanic S. elegans.  相似文献

The present paper studied the influence of different food regimes on the free amino acid (FAA) pool, the rate of protein turnover, the flux of amino acids, and their relation to growth of larval turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.) from first feeding until metamorphosis. The amino acid profile of protein was stable during the larval period although some small, but significant, differences were found. Turbot larvae had proteins which were rich in leucine and aspartate, and poor in glutamate, suggesting a high leucine requirement. The profile of the FAA pool was highly variable and quite different from the amino acid profile in protein. The proportion of essential FAA decreased with development. High contents of free tyrosine and phenylalanine were found on Day 3, while free taurine was present at high levels throughout the experimental period. Larval growth rates were positively correlated with taurine levels, suggesting a dietary dependency for taurine and/or sulphur amino acids. Reduced growth rates in Artemia-fed larvae were associated with lower levels of free methionine, indicating that this diet is deficient in methionine for turbot larvae. Leucine might also be limiting turbot growth as the different diet organisms had lower levels of this amino acid in the free pool than was found in the larval protein. A previously presented model was used to describe the flux of amino acids in growing turbot larvae. The FAA pool was found to be small and variable. It was estimated that the daily dietary amino acid intake might be up to ten times the larval FAA pool. In addition, protein synthesis and protein degradation might daily remove and return, respectively, the equivalent of up to 20 and 10 times the size of the FAA pool. In an early phase (Day 11) high growth rates were associated with a relatively low protein turnover, while at a later stage (Day 17), a much higher turnover was observed. Frond growth of Macrocystis pyrifera in the Falkland Islands was monitored in shallow coastal water from December 1985 to March 1987, and at a different site in deeper water from December 1985 to June 1986. Growth rates in the deeper bed were generally higher than those recorded in the coastal zone. At both sites, node initiation and elongation rate fluctuated according to the seasonal pattern of light or water temperature. In the shallow coastal area, nitrate was abundant in the winter and below detection levels during late spring and summer. Correlation analysis suggests that the production of the fronds of the giant kelp in this area was probably inhibited during the summer months by extremely low concentrations of nutrients. Internal nitrogen was exhausted approximately one month after a sharp decline in ambient nitrate concentration, and carbon reserves were formed. In the deeper bed of M. pyrifera, nitrogen was abundant all year round and the production of the fronds reflected the seasonal pattern of light or water temperature. The nitrogen content of the tissue probably did not drop below a level that limited production, and no internal carbon reserves were accumulated.  相似文献

The consideration of a possible enhanced vertical migration of radiocaesium with the application of ammonium-ferric-hexacyano-ferrate (AFCF) as countermeasure, due to the colloidal nature of AFCF, made us set up a series of migration experiments. For the study two soil types were considered, which were either left unplanted or cultivated with ryegrass. Two AFCF concentrations, 1 and 10 g m-2, and an untreated control were applied. A simple diffusion–convection model was fitted to the data.The application of AFCF did not enhance the downward migration of radiocaesium in the profile. Moreover, for an unplanted sandy soil the application of AFCF significantly retarded the migration: 10 g AFCF m-2 decreased the convection term, V, from 0·78 to 0·42 cm a-1 and the diffusion component, D, from 0·21 to 0·09 cm2 a-1. For all other experimental conditions (unplanted loamy soil, ryegrass cultivated sandy and loamy soil), the application of AFCF did not have any effect on radiocaesium migration. Since AFCF does not promote the vertical migration of radiocaesium, enhanced groundwater contamination is improbable.  相似文献
