Oil pollution studies in the Nile River. I. Survey of oil and grease in Nile water

A survey of oil and grease along the Nile River indicated the presence of variable concentrations of these pollutants. It was found that some stations along the Nile are more polluted than others. These are located mostly at lake Nasser port (Aswan segment); oil distribution centers and ship waiting areas (Assiut segment); boat docks, a ship yard, and an electric power station (Cairo segment); and at factory areas (Rossetta segment). The level of oil and grease decreased significantly when moving downstream. In addition, the level of oil and grease along the river was lower in summer than in winter and spring. This may be attributed to the decrease of activities and increase of vaporization processes.
