This study investigates biomass, density, photosynthetic activity, and accumulation of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in three wetland plants (Canna indica, Typha augustifolia, and Phragmites austrail) in response to the introduction of the earthworm Eisenia fetida into a constructed wetland. The removal efficiency of N and P in constructed wetlands were also investigated. Results showed that the photosynthetic rate (P n), transpiration rate (T r), and stomatal conductance (S cond) of C. indica and P. austrail were (p?<?0.05) significantly higher when earthworms were present. The addition of E. fetida increased the N uptake value by above-ground of C. indica, T. augustifolia, and P. australis by 185, 216, and 108 %, respectively; and its P uptake value increased by 300, 355, and 211 %, respectively. Earthworms could enhance photosynthetic activity, density, and biomass of wetland plants in constructed wetland, resulting in the higher N and P uptake. The addition of E. fetida into constructed wetland increased the removal efficiency of TN and TP by 10 and 7 %, respectively. The addition of earthworms into vertical flow constructed wetland increased the removal efficiency of TN and TP, which was related to higher photosynthetic activity and N and P uptake. The addition of earthworms into vertical flow constructed wetland and plant harvests could be the significantly sustainable N and P removal strategy.  相似文献

The oxidative degradation of polyolefins in the presence of transition metal catalysts is well known in the patent and technical literature. It has been suggested that a properly designed oxidatively degradable polymer could be used in limited lifetime articles and also on those whose primary method of disposal is composting, wherein the thermal activity is used to accelerate the oxidation process. The results of a detailed study of transition metal reactivity in the presence of numerous oxidation promoting species in polyolefins are presented. The oxidative degradation of these polyolefins was demonstrated at moderate temperatures under air and in a simulated compost environment. Approaches to determining the ultimate fate of these materials are discussed.  相似文献

Contaminated groundwater at a chemical antioxidant and phenolic resin chemical production site was subjected to treatability studies to develop design criteria for surface water discharge. Raw groundwater required pretreatment for total suspended solids (TSS) and color removal prior to treatment by ultraviolet light/hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2). Because of high capital and operating costs for UV/H2O2, biological treatment was evaluated as an alternate. Respirometric analyses showed that completely mixed activated sludge could be applied as a treatment technology to the groundwater. Biotreatment resulted in an approximately 70 percent reduction in soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD). Residual SCOD was recalcitrant to further biodegradation. The treated effluent was tested for aquatic toxicity using fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) and Ceriodaphnia dubia and was found to be toxic. Toxicity reduction of biotreatment effluent was evaluated in bench-scale experiments using activated carbon adsorption, filtration, and UV/H2O2. Subsequent toxicity testing showed that filtration alone could reduce the bioeffluent toxicity and that residual SCOD was not the primary source of toxicity.  相似文献

We are often tempted to believe that a nation's resource policy is the result of careful deliberation and conscious design and is articulated in a relatively few statutes. This paper traces the history of percentage depletion in the USA and finds that this particular resource policy has evolved in the absence of a recognizable master plan. Percentage depletion has developed through a continuing political tug-of-war in the US Congress as a seemingly unending array of special interest groups sought and finally gained the prize of percentage depletion for their industry.  相似文献

The courts have provided the traditional battleground for conflicts between environmental interest groups and those whose actions in some way have an adverse impact on the environment The judicial process is a time-consuming one in which all sides usually must concede to some points. Environmental disputes involve complex scientific issues which the court system is not set up to comprehend, so that the process gives the parties to a dispute the sense of having lost control of their own destinies. An increasing number of parties to environmental disputes are turning to negotiation, or mediation, as an alternative in which they can be active parties in the settlement-making process rather than the victims of a court-imposed solution When do the parties to a dispute choose a negotiated settlement over a court battle? To what extent does each party make the concessions necessary to reach an agreement? These questions can be answered by the game theory that provides a model for analyzing the negotiation process. ABSTRACT: A significant fraction of rhodamine WT dye was lost during a short term multitracer injection experiment in a mountain stream environment. The conservative anion chloride and the sorbing cation lithium were concurrently injected. In-stream rhodamine WT concentrations were as low as 45 percent of that expected, based on chloride data. Concentration data were available from shallow‘wells’dug near the stream course and from a seep of suspected return flow. Both rhodamine WT dye and lithium were nonconservative with respect to the conservative chloride, with rhodamine WT dye closely following the behavior of the sorbing lithium. Nonsorption and sorption mechanisms for rhodamine WT loss in a mountain stream were evaluated in laboratory experiments. Experiments evaluating nonsorption losses indicated minimal losses by such mechanisms. Laboratory experiments using sand and gravel size streambed sediments show an appreciable capacity for rhodamine WT sorption. The detection of tracers in the shallow wells and seep indicates interaction between the stream and the flow in the surrounding subsurface, intergravel water, system. The injected tracers had ample opportunity for intimate contact with materials shown in the laboratory experiments to be potentially sorptive. It is suggested that in the study stream system, interaction with streambed gravel was a significant mechanism for the attenuation of rhodamine WT dye (relative to chloride).  相似文献

Legislation mandating the protection of wetlands, combined with current pressures to convert them to other uses, emphasize the need to determine accurately a wetland-upland boundary We investigated six methods designed to establish such a boundary based on vegetation Each method was applied to a common data set obtained from 295 quadrats along 22 transects between marsh and upland areas in 13 intertidal saline wetlands in Oregon and Washington. A sequentially combined carbon (SCC) source using methanol and acetic acid was investigated for biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal in a wastewater treatment process consisting of an anoxic zone, an oxic zone and a final settling tank. The anoxic zone was divided into two separate anoxic zones to feed methanol in the first anoxic zone and acetic acid in the second anoxic zone. Methanol and acetic acid, each as the sole carbon source, were also tested for comparison. The use of SCC was superior in nitrogen removal with all combined COD ratios of methanol/acetic acid tested, yielding 95.8-97% efficiency (less than 1 mg N/l in the final effluent). The highest phosphorus removal of above 92% (final effluent concentration of 0.12 mg P/l) was achieved when only acetic acid was used at a quantity equivalent to 50 mg COD/l. However, when SCC was used, the acetic acid dosage of 50 mg COD/l could be reduced down to 20 mg COD/l when 30 mg COD/l was replaced by methanol; this resulted in a final effluent phosphorus concentration of 0.6 mg P/l. Additional benefits of SCC included the excellent sludge settling properties compared to the use of methanol or acetic acid alone.  相似文献

A set of peat column experiments was used to determine the transport potential of lead (Pb) and diesel range organics (DRO) in palustrine slope wetlands near Juneau, AK. This project is important to southeast Alaskan communities because limited land resources are forcing development of regional wetlands. This study was instigated by concerns that proposed modifications to a nearby rifle range using DRO-contaminated soil posed a potential risk to an anadromous fish-bearing stream 250 m from the site. Three pairs of peat columns were extracted from the rifle range for analysis, one pair along and two pairs across the natural bedding planes of the soil. One column in each pair was spiked with Pb and DRO and the other was used as a control. Approximately 1-year worth of water (171 cm) was passed through each column and leachate was collected at regular intervals. The results showed that substantial DRO transport only occurred along the bedding planes. Leads was surprisingly mobile, both along and across the bedding planes with estimated soil-water partition coefficients several orders of magnitude lower than commonly published values, probably because the peat was heavily Pb-loaded by lead from bullets and because the peat's acidic, organic-rich environment enhanced Pb mobility. The chemical outflow behavior agreed with a simple macropore transport model. These results underscore the need for caution when developing regional wetlands.  相似文献

Wastewater contains human, animal, and plant pathogens capable of causing viral, bacterial, or parasitic infections. There are several routes whereby sewage pathogens may affect human health, including direct contact, contamination of food crops, zoonoses, and vectors. The range and numbers of pathogens in municipal wastewater vary with the level of endemic disease in the community, discharges from commercial activities, and seasonal factors. Regulations to control pathogen risk in the United States and Europe arising from land application of biosolids are based on the concept of multiple barriers to the prevention of transmission. The barriers are (i) treatment to reduce pathogen content and vector attraction, (ii) restrictions on crops grown on land to which biosolids have been applied, and (iii) minimum intervals following application and grazing or harvesting. Wastewater treatment reduces number of pathogens in the wastewater by concentrating them with the solids in the sludge. Although some treatment processes are designed specifically to inactivate pathogens, many are not, and the actual mechanisms of microbial inactivation are not fully understood for all processes. Vector attraction is reduced by stabilization (reduction of readily biodegradable material) and/or incorporation immediately following application. Concerns about health risks have renewed interest in the effects of treatment (on pathogens) and advanced treatment methods, and work performed in the United States suggests that Class A pathogen reduction can be achieved less expensively than previously thought. Effective pathogen risk management requires control to the complete chain of sludge treatment, biosolids handling and application, and post-application activities. This may be achieved by adherence to quality management systems based on hazard analysis critical control point (HACCP) principles.  相似文献
