Fate of applied N in forage-based agricultural systems is important to long-term production and environmental impacts. We evaluated the factorial combination of N fertilization targeted to supply 20 g N m 2 yr(-1) and harvest strategies on soil-profile inorganic N during the first 5 yr of 'Coastal' bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.] management. Harvest strategy had much larger effects than fertilization strategy, most notably that soil-profile inorganic N was lower when hayed than under other systems. In the upper rooting zone (0- to 0.3-m depth), soil inorganic N (initially at 3.1 g m(-2)) remained unchanged during the 5 yr under unharvested and low and high grazing pressures (0.00 +/- 0.08 g m(-2) yr(-1)), but declined with haying (-0.25 g m(-2) yr(-1)). In the lower rooting zone (0.3- to 0.9-m depth), soil inorganic N (initially at 2.9 g m(-2)) accumulated with unharvested and low and high grazing pressure (0.64 +/- 0.20 g m(-2) yr(-1)), but remained unchanged with haying (-0.06 g m(-2) yr(-1)). Below the rooting zone (0.9- to 1.5-m depth), soil inorganic N (initially at 5.8 g m(-2)) increased with unharvested and high grazing pressure (0.34 +/- 0.03 g m(-2) yr(-1)), was unchanged with low grazing pressure (-0.10 g m(-2) yr(-1)), and declined with haying (-0.50 g m(-2) yr(-1)). Applied N appears to have been efficiently utilized by forage with subsequent sequestration into soil organic matter and little movement of inorganic N below the rooting zone (< 2% of applied N), irrespective of inorganic or organic fertilization strategy designed to supply sufficient N for high animal production from grazing. 相似文献

We investigated differences in vegetation composition and dynamics for two globally rare ecosystems, bracken–grasslands and northern–dry forests of northern Wisconsin. These ecosystems commonly have been viewed as degraded pine barrens. Bracken–grasslands contained a high dominance of exotic species, low native richness, and no obvious prairie species, suggesting logging-era anthropogenic origins. Differences in cover for common plants among ecosystems were examined using Mann-Whitney U tests of equivalence. Cover of all 8 graminoid species, 4 of 5 Ericaceae and Myricaceae species, and 10 of 17 species of forbs were significantly different between ecosystems. Vegetation changes over a 4-year period were examined through detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) and analysis of variance (ANOVA) repeated measures. DCA analyses of community composition failed to detect significant temporal trends within individual management units, although differences were apparent between ecosystems, regardless of sample year. In addition, no apparent patterns could be detected between years when comparing dominant individual species to management history (prescribed fire). This is contrary to what would be expected for a degraded pine barrens and questions the efficacy of using repeated prescribed fire as a management tool in bracken–grasslands. Methods for conservation and restoration of xeric ecosystems of northern Wisconsin have historically relied heavily on single species (e.g., sharp-tailed grouse) wildlife models, without full consideration of other factors. We suggest that stakeholders involved in these restoration projects examine historic processes and reference conditions prior to formulating management goals. Greater attention to the differentiation and individual management needs of pine barrens, northern–dry forests, and bracken–grasslands is needed. 相似文献

Experience with three prenatally diagnosed pregnancies complicated by an acardiac twin reveals that ultrasonography and echocardiography are helpful in detecting early signs of in-utero congestive heart failure in the normal twin. The use of Doppler blood flow analysis to determine direction of blood flow, post-mortem placental and fetal angiography, and umbilical cord blood gas determination provided proof that retrograde arterial perfusion occurs in the acardiac fetus. ABSTRACT: In order to establish meaningful nutrient criteria, consideration must be given to the spatial variations in geographic phenomena that cause or reflect differences in nutrient concentrations in streams. Regional differences in stream nutrient concentrations were illustrated using stream data collected from 928 nonpoint‐source watersheds distributed throughout the country and sampled as part of the U.S. EPA National Eutrophication Survey (NES). Spatial patterns in the differences were compared and found to correspond with an a priori regional classification system based on regional patterns in landscape attributes associated with variation in nutrient concentrations. The classification consists of 14 regions composed of aggregations of the 84 U.S. EPA Level III Ecoregions. The primary distinguishing characteristics of each region and the factors associated with variability in water quality characteristics are presented. The use of the NES and many other extant monitoring data sets to develop regional reference conditions for nutrient concentrations in streams is discouraged on the basis of sample representation. The necessity that all sites used in such an effort be regionally representative and consistently screened for least possible impact is emphasized. These sampling issues are rigorously addressed by the U.S. EPA Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP). A case‐study, using EMAP data collected from the Central and Eastern Forested Uplands, demonstrates how regional reference conditions and draft nutrient criteria could be developed. 相似文献

In the present study, 136 undergraduate commerce students participated in a simulation of the job application process by completing one of two application blanks (discriminatory versus non-discriminatory), that did or did not include a statement about the organization's commitment to employment equity. The results indicated that subjects who completed the application blank without the discriminatory questions had significantly more positive reactions of organization attractiveness, job application success, motivation to pursue employment with the organization, job acceptance intention, fairness of the organization's treatment of its employees, and likelihood of recommending the organization to friends in comparison to subjects who completed the application blank with discriminatory questions. In addition, subjects who believed the organization had an employment equity program were more positive about their motivation to pursue employment with the organization, job acceptance intention, the fairness of the organization's treatment of its employees, and the likelihood of recommending the organization to friends. Periphyton communities represent potentially excellent candidates for assessing the recovery of lotic ecosystems after disturbance.
These communities are ubiquitous, relatively easy to sample and measure (in terms of total community biomass), have short
generation times, and may influence the recovery rates of higher trophic levels. The first section of this article analyzes
how site availability, species availability, and differential species performance influence periphyton successional dynamics.
This background information provides a foundation for understanding how periphytic organisms respond after a disturbance.
The second section of this article analyzes how periphyton communities respond to four different types of disturbance (flood
events, desiccation, organic nutrient enrichment, and toxic metal exposure). Although data are limited, it is concluded that
the fast growth rates and short generation times of periphytic organisms, coupled with their flexible life history strategies
and good dispersal ability, allow lotic periphyton communities to recover relatively quickly after a disturbance. In addition,
disturbance type and severity, local environmental conditions, and site-specific factors also will influence recovery rates.
Future research needs include a better understanding of: (1) what periphyton property(ies) would serve as the best index of
recovery; (2) whether or not the robustness of this index varies among different environments and different disturbances;
(3) interactions between autotrophs and heterotrophs within the periphyton mat, particularly with respect to nutrient cycling;
(4) competitive interactions among organisms; (5) functional redundancy of organisms; and (6) the influence of the riparian
zone and channel geomorphology on periphyton recovery rates. 相似文献

Mount St. Helens provides an interesting case study of a forest and wildland area that has been radically altered in recent
history. As a result of volcanic activity, the recreation environment has changed with respect to the setting, climbing opportunities,
and motivations for mountaineering. An evaluation process using both qualitative and quantitative methods was developed to
determine what the motivations, demographic characteristics, and preferred management techniques were for the posteruption
Mount St. Helens mountain-climbing visitor. Results suggest that changes have occurred in the “new” or posteruption climbing
visitor. These changes have not all been congruent with those anticipated by management. For example, the climbing visitor
is now less interested in climbing opportunities and more concerned with seeing the crater and other volcanic-related features.
This article discusses the findings of this research in light of how resource managers might consider the issue of visitor
changes in both demands and types of uses. For example, determining quota numbers based on sociological determinants (e.g.,
desire for solitude) need to be firmly grounded in who the visitors actually are rather than who they were. Consequently,
management tools such as the Recreational Opportunity Spectrum (ROS) and Limits of Acceptable Change (LAC) may need to be
altered to accommodate a changing resource or visitor base. These and other findings have implications for the future management
practices of the Mount St. Helens area and other environments where the recreation resources have undergone rapid and profound
