As an economically developing country, Turkey has very well operated integrated solid waste management applications structured
on modern facilities, besides over 2,000 scattered open dump areas in the country. Integrated waste management applications
seem eligible for the metropolitan cities like Istanbul and Izmit (Kocaeli). Attempts have not been encouraging for the scattered
regional settlements using central storage sites due to financial shortages and received rejections from nearby settlements.
Small-scale compact solid waste management systems with materials recycling and composting can be more suitable alternatives
in the small-scale regional settlements. The major constituents of municipal solid waste are organic in nature and approximately
a quarter of municipal solid waste is recyclable. Although paper, including cardboard, is the main constituent, the composition
of recyclable waste varies strongly by the source or the type of collection point. Solid wastes need primary treatment in
order to be suitable for incineration and composting. Turkey needs to give more emphasis on the usage of modern solid waste
removal technologies to overcome the overgrowing solid waste disposal problems. 相似文献
Plasticized starch (PLS) is a renewable, degradable, and inexpensive polymer, but it suffers from poor mechanical properties.
The mechanical properties can be improved by blending PLS with polyolefins, nonetheless, at high PLS content, the mechanical
properties remain poor. Here we show that addition of clay can greatly improve the mechanical properties of PLS/polypropylene
blends at high starch content. Unmodified and organically modified montmorillonite clays, MMT and Cloisite 30B respectively,
were added to blends of glycerol-plasticized starch and polypropylene, compatibilized using maleated polypropylene. TEM indicates
that MMT is well dispersed in the PLS phase of the blends, while Cloisite 30B is located both within the PLS phase as well
as at the interface between PLS and PP. At high PLS content, the addition of clay increased the tensile strength and tensile
modulus by an order of magnitude, while reducing the ultimate elongation only slightly. Such improvements are attributable
to both the addition of clay as a reinforcing component, as well as to the change in the two phase morphology due to addition
of clay. 相似文献
A set of biochemical and histological responses was measured in wild gudgeon collected upstream and downstream of urban and pharmaceutical manufacture effluents. These individual end-points were associated to fish assemblage characterisation. Responses of biotransformation enzymes, neurotoxicity and endocrine disruption biomarkers revealed contamination of investigated stream by a mixture of pollutants. Fish from sampled sites downstream of the industrial effluent exhibited also strong signs of endocrine disruption including vitellogenin induction, intersex and male-biased sex-ratio. These individual effects were associated to a decrease of density and a lack of sensitive fish species. This evidence supports the hypothesis that pharmaceutical compounds discharged in stream are involved in recorded endocrine disruption effects and fish population disturbances and threaten disappearance of resident fish species. Overall, this study gives argument for the utilisation of an effect-based monitoring approach to assess impacts of pharmaceutical manufacture discharges on wild fish populations. 相似文献
We studied the susceptibility patterns to 15 different antibiotics and six heavy metals in Aeromonas spp. and Pseudomonas spp. isolated from Iskenderun Bay, Turkey (northeast Mediterranean Sea). A high percentage of Aeromonas isolates showed resistance to cefazolin (66.6%) and trimethoprim–sulphamethoxazole (66.6%). Amongst the Pseudomonas isolates, there was a high incidence of resistance to nitrofurantoin (86.2%), cefazolin (84.8%) and cefuroxime (71.7%). Most isolates showed tolerance to different concentrations of heavy metals, and minimal inhibition concentrations ranged from 25 to >3,200 μg/ml. The Aeromonas spp. and Pseudomonas spp. showed high resistance to copper of 98.3% and 75.4%, respectively, and low resistance to lead of 1.7% and 7.2%, respectively. Our results show that antibiotic and heavy metal resistant Aeromonas spp. and Pseudomonas spp. were widespread in Iskenderun Bay in 2007 and 2008. The increasing presence of antibiotic and heavy metal resistant Aeromonas spp. and Pseudomonas spp. may become a potential human health hazard. 相似文献
The simultaneous presence of distinct compounds in the aquatic environment can be causative of various toxicological interactions. This scenario challenges ecotoxicologists, since the assessment of toxicological effects caused by the simultaneous presence of multiple substances is by far more complicated. An illustrative example can be given by mentioning the anticholinesterasic compounds: by studying the level of cholinesterase impairment of an exposed organism, it is possible to ascertain the level of exposure to all anticholinesterasics (despite their chemical classes and natures) that the organism was subjected to. In this work, we describe the effects of three chemically different, albeit mechanistically, and toxicologically similar compounds (copper, chlorfenvinphos, and pyridostigmine) on cholinesterases of the fish Gambusia holbrooki. The results showed that the combinatorial effects may be of considerable extent, even for levels of exposure that are close to the ones already reported in the wild, for each isolated compound. 相似文献
This study is focused on the preparation, characterization, and determination of thermal properties and thermal reliability
of paraffin/polypropylene (PP) composite as a novel form-stable phase change material (PCM) for thermal energy storage applications.
In the composite, paraffin acts as a PCM when PP is operated as supporting material. The composites prepared at different
mass fractions of paraffin (50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 w/w%) by solution casting method were subjected to leakage test by heating
the composites over the melting temperature of the PCM. The paraffin/PP composite (70/30 w/w%) is found as the maximum paraffin
containing composite and was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, optic microscopy, differential scanning
calorimetry (DSC), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. DSC analysis indicated that the form-stable paraffin/PP
composite melts at 44.77–45.52 °C and crystallizes at 53.55–54.80 °C. It has latent heats of 136.16 and −136.59 J/g for melting
and crystallization, respectively. These thermal properties make it potential PCM for latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES)
purposes such as solar space heating applications. Accelerated thermal cycling tests indicated that the form-stable PCM had
good thermal reliability. TGA also showed that the form-stable PCM degrades in two distinguishable steps and had good chemical
stability. 相似文献
Flatfish species, such as the turbot (Scophthalmus maximus), are common targets for toxic effects, since they are exposed through the food chain (ingestion of contaminated preys) and are in direct contact with the waterborne contaminant and sediments. Furthermore, these fish species live in close proximity to interstitial water that frequently dissolves high amounts of contaminants, including metals. Despite this significant set of characteristics, the present knowledge concerning flatfish contamination and toxicity by metals is still scarce. To attain the objective of assessing the effects of metals on a flatfish species, S. maximus specimens were chronically exposed to lead, copper and zinc, at ecologically relevant concentrations, and biochemical (oxidative stress: catalase and glutathione S-transferases activities, and lipid peroxidation; neurotoxicity: cholinesterase activity) parameters were assessed on selected tissues (gills and liver). Copper had no significant effects on all tested parameters; lead was causative of significant increases in liver GSTs activities and also in lipoperoxidation of gill tissue; exposure to zinc caused a significant increase in catalase activity of gill tissue. None of the tested metals elicited noteworthy effects in terms of neurotoxicity. The obtained results showed that only the metal lead is of some environmental importance, since it was able to cause deleterious modifications of oxidative nature at relevant concentrations. 相似文献
In this study, the influence of alkali (NaOH) treatment on the mechanical, thermal and morphological properties of eco-composites
of short flax fiber/poly(lactic acid) (PLA) was investigated. SEM analysis conducted on alkali treated flax fibers showed
that the packed structure of the fibrils was deformed by the removal non-cellulosic materials. The fibrils were separated
from each other and the surface roughness of the alkali treated flax fibers was improved. The mechanical tests indicated that
the modulus of the untreated fiber/PLA composites was higher than that of PLA; on the other hand the modulus of alkali treated
flax fiber/PLA was lower than PLA. Thermal properties of the PLA in the treated flax fiber composites were also affected.
Tg values of treated flax fiber composites were lowered by nearly 10 °C for 10% NaOH treatment and 15 °C for 30% NaOH treatment.
A bimodal melting behavior was observed for treated fiber composites different than both of neat PLA and untreated fiber composites.
Furthermore, wide angle X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the crystalline structure of cellulose of flax fibers changed
from cellulose-I structure to cellulose-II. 相似文献
Phylogenetic relationships near the origin of extant crocodylians are weakly supported, and this lack of resolution makes for poor estimates of taxonomic and morphological diversity. Previously known taxa are found throughout the Cretaceous in Laurasia and at a few sites from Brazil, Australia, and northern Africa. Here, we report Batrachomimus pastosbonensis gen. et sp. nov. from the Late Jurassic of northeastern Brazil, which is deeply nested within Neosuchia and associated to the Cretaceous Asian paralligatorids. The new taxon predates all other members of Paralligatoridae and its immediate sister group (including Eusuchia) by 30 million years. A nearly complete skull, osteoderms, and limb bones were recovered, and autapomorphies of B. pastosbonensis include a scalloped lateral margin of the rostrum in dorsal view, unsculpted alveolar margin at the caudalmost portion of the maxilla, blunt lateral prongs on the jugal at the base of the postorbital bar, hourglass shaped choanae, and pterygoid choanal septum extended between the palatal shelves of the palatines. The crocodyloid-like skull proportions and the slender, conical teeth suggest an amphibious and piscivorous life history to this 1 m long animal.
