Emergency centers in Israel: A small community organizes to cope with war related crises*

This paper focuses on community-wide emergencies caused by war-related events in Lebanon at the beginning of June 1982. Mobilization for the "Peace for Galilee" campaign began on Friday, 4th June. Overnight, families were disrupted, husbands and sons were in danger, and within 24 hours there were notifications of casualities and deaths. Families in crisis became a widespread phenomenon. In Herzlia, as in many other communities, a new service - the Emergency Center - emerged under the auspices of the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and the Municipality. The authors describe this process of getting organized, the populations served, how the Center was staffed, the role of citizen volunteers, and the types of interventions used to help vulnerable families as well as soldiers home on leave. Stress is placed on the unique type of short-term co-operation achieved between social workers of the local Department of Social Welfare, the staff of the Department of Community Services (especially its Volunteer Bureau), the local liason officer of the Israel Defence Force, the municipal government, and public-spirited volunteers. Mention is made of conditions which made possible the activation of such a service within hours, of the Center's capacity to serve all segments of the population, and of how it was deactivated within a few weeks when the emergency ended. On the basis of lessons learned from this experience, the paper ends with a number of specific recommendations. The authors hope that such innovative forms of crisis-intervention will become part of the helping technology widely available at the community level in future years.     

A morphological approach for relating decapod crustacean cephalothorax shape with distribution in the water column

Cephalothorax profiles for individuals of 18 decapod crustacean species were obtained from pictures of specimens captured using various experimental bottom trawls in the Mediterranean basin, at depths ranging from 200 to 4000 m in 2000 and 2002. Profiles were compared using the shape (outline) of the entire cephalothorax (including and excluding the rostrum). Principal component analysis (PCA) of the profiles, rostrum included, yielded two large species groupings related to rostrum size, species having a long rostrum being clustered on the positive portion of the first axis and species having a short rostrum being clustered on the negative portion of this same axis (the F1 axis explained 72.17% of the total variance). The PCA separated pelagic and endobenthic animals (with short rostrums) from nektobenthic animals (with long rostrums). Only the two deepest-dwelling species (dwelling at depths below 2000 m) were distanced from their respective groups. The pelagic shrimp Acanthephyra pelagica was clearly grouped with the nektobenthic species despite being reported to have a pelagic habitat. The nektobenthic deep-sea species Nematocarcinus exilis has a relatively medium-size rostrum and was placed among the pelagic–endobenthic species. The endobenthic and pelagic groups remained stable even when rostral morphometrics were excluded from the PCA analysis. The hypothesis that predation and diet are the fundamental determining factors for all habitats throughout most of the lifetimes of individuals and hence that species will evolve specialised phenotypes to adapt to local environmental conditions is considered in the discussion.Communicated by O. Distribution of Juvenile,subadult and adult Scylla serrata (Crustacea: Portunidae) on tidal flats in Australia

In Deception Bay, northern Australia, during 1979–1981, a study was made of the distribution of Scylla serrata (Forskal) in an area having a broad intertidal zone. Juveniles (20 to 99 mm carapace width) were resident in the mangrove zone, remaining there during low tide. The majority of subadult crabs (100 to 149 mm) migrated into the intertidal zone to feed at high tide and retreated to subtidal waters at low tide. Adults (150 mm and larger) were caught mainly subtidally and only small numbers were captured in the intertidal at high tide. Few crabs were captured in the coolest months (May to August). Adults were captured on the flats mainly in the warmest months (January to April), but subadults could be captured over the entire summer (September to March). Juveniles were found in the upper intertidal throughout the year.
