ABSTRACT: A Geographic Information System (GIS) was used to develop an automated procedure for identifying the primary aquifers supplying ground water to individual wells in eastern Arkansas. As mandated by state law, water-use data are reported by ground-water withdrawers annually to the Arkansas Soil and Water Conservation Commission, and stored in the Arkansas Site-Specific Water-Use Data System provided and supported by the U.S. Geological Survey. Although most withdrawers are able to provide the amount of water withdrawn and the depth of their wells, very few are able to provide the name of the aquifer from which they withdraw water. GIS software was used to develop an automated procedure for identifying the primary aquifers supplying ground water to individual wells in eastern Arkansas. The software was used to generate a spatial representation of the bottom boundary for the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer (the shallowest aquifer) in eastern Arkansas from well log-data collected by the U.S. Geological Survey. The software was then used to determine the depth of the aquifer bottom at reported well locations to ascertain whether the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer or a deeper aquifer was the primary aquifer providing water to each well. Distinct forms of reactions to sexual harassment were identified in the current study, and a classification scheme was developed based upon those reactions. One hundred forty two male and 100 female upper-division undergraduate management students and 44 working women read 18 randomly ordered scenarios, each of which depicted a woman being exposed to a different form of sexual harassment by a man. For each incident, the subjects were asked to write down what they themselves would do if they were in the woman's place. The resulting 5148 open-ended responses were systematically sorted into 10 classes of reaction types. In addition to assessing the reliability and validity of the classification scheme, the relative frequency of employment of the various classes was examined. Comparisons of the reactions of men and women students and comparisons of the reactions of working women and women students yielded few significant differences. 相似文献

The decontamination of soils and wastes polluted with heavy metals presents one of the most intractable problems for soil clean-up. Present technology relies upon metal extraction or immobilization processes, both of which are expensive and which remove all biological activity in the soil during decontamination. They may only be appropriate for small areas of valuable redevelopment land. In this paper the use of metal-accumulating plants is explored for the removal of metals from superficially-contaminated soils such as those resulting from the long-term application to land of metal-contaminated sewage sludges. Green remediation employs plants native to metalliferous soils with a capacity to bioaccumulate metals such as zinc and nickel to concentrations greater than 2% in the aerial plant dry matter (hyperaccumulators). Growing such plants under intensive crop conditions and harvesting the dry matter is proposed as a possible method of metal removal and for ‘polishing’ contaminated agricultural soils down to metal concentrations below statutory limits. Not only are the biological activity and physical structure of soils maintained but the technique is potentially cheap, visually unobtrusive and offers the possibility of biorecovery of metals. Abandoned metalliferous mine wastes can result in severe pollution and have aesthetic impacts on the local environment. Use of a vegetation cover gives a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable method of stabilising and reclaiming wastes such as mine-spoils and tailings. Many characteristics of metalliferous wastes are often inimical to successful vegetation establishment, most notably phytotoxic levels of residual heavy metals, low nutrient status and poor physical structure of the substratum. Current approaches to revegetation and reclamation involve both ameliorative and adaptive strategies to allow plant establishment and encourage subsequent vegetation development. Different techniques of revegetation are available for temperate and arid, subtropical regions depending on the characteristics of the waste. females and hatched in semi-natural incubators. In the first experiment we used eggs from two females. One of the clutches
was subdivided to be placed in different incubators. Immediately after emergence one of these hatchling groups was introduced
into a 10 m x 10 m enclosure. At the same time we introduced hatchlings from another female. The remaining hatchling group
was kept separate for 3 weeks and was then introduced into the same cage. Unrelated hatchlings separated from each other.
Related but separated hatchlings grouped according to introduction date. In the second experiment we maintained eight kin
groups in individual cages and two hatchlings per kin group in an additonal cage. Hatchlings from the mixed group showed no
preference for their kin before physical contact with pure kin groups had occurred. After physical contact hatchling recognized

Contribution of Roads to Forest Fragmentation in the Rocky Mountains 总被引:18,自引:0,他引:18
The contribution of roads to forest fragmentation has not been adequately analyzed. We quantified fragmentation due to roads in a 30,213-ha section of the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest in sout heastern Wyoming with several indices of landscape structure using a geographic information system. The number of patches, mean patch area, mean interior area, mean area of edge influence, mean patch perimeter, total perimeter, and mean patch shape identified patch- and edge-related landscape changes. Shannon-Wiener diversity, dominance, contagion, contrast, and angular second moment indicated effects on landscape diversity and texture. Roads added to forest fragmentation more than clearcuts by dissecting large patches into smaller pieces and by converting forest interior habitat into edge habitat. Edge habitat created by roads was 1.54–1.98 times the edge habitat created by clearcuts. The total landscape area affected by clearcuts and roads was 2.5–3.5 times the actual area occupied by these disturbances. Fragmentation due to roads could be minimized if road construction is minimized or rerouted so that its fragmentation effects are reduced. Geographic information system technology can be used to quantify the potential fragmentation effects of individual roads and the cumulative effects of a road network on landscape structure. 相似文献

Summary. Hyperaccumulation of metals in the shoot system of
plants is uncommon, yet taxonomically and geographically widespread. It
may have a variety of functions, including defense against herbivores.
This study investigated the effects of hyperaccumulation on metal
concentrations across trophic levels. We collected plant material, soil,
and invertebrates from Portuguese serpentine outcrops whose vegetation
is dominated by the nickel hyperaccumulator Alyssum pintodasilvae.
Samples were analyzed for nickel, chromium, and cobalt. Grasshoppers,
spiders, and other invertebrates collected from sites where A.
pintodasilvae was common had significantly elevated concentrations of
nickel, compared to nearby sites where this hyperaccumulator was not
found. Chromium and cobalt, occurring in high concentrations in the
serpentine soil but not accumulated by A. pintodasilvae, were not
elevated in the invertebrates. Therefore, it appears likely that a flux
of nickel to herbivore and carnivore trophic levels is specifically
facilitated by the presence of plants that hyperaccumulate this metal.
The results may be relevant to the development of phytoremediation and
phytomining technologies, which use plants to extract metals from the
soil.

Restoration of Landscape Structure Altered by Fire Suppression 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

There is increasing interest in applying landscape ecological research to the management of wildlands, particularly regarding the negative effects of fragmentation and the benefits of corridors. Patch-producing large disturbances, such as fires and floods, produce a spatial mosaic structure in landscapes to which many species are sensitive. Management of the spatial structure of the patch mosaic has seldom been an explicit concern, however, in part because of insufficient knowledge about bow this spatial structure is affected by alterations in the disturbance regime. Yet the patch mosaic structure of many landscapes has been altered by disturbance control (such as fire suppression), and there is substantial interest in restoring natural disturbance regimes in some wildland landscapes. It has been proposed that, in landscapes subjected to decades of fire suppression, simple reinstatement of the natural fire regime may lead to adverse effects because fuel buildup during fire suppression may result in unusually large fires. It has also been proposed that the use of small prescribed fires may be an effective approach to restoration of landscapes subjected to fire suppression. Here I use a spatial GIS-based simulation model to analyze the effects of reinstating a natural fire regime in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, Minnesota, after 82 years of fire suppression. The simulation experiment suggests that suppression can be expected to significantly alter landscape structure, but landscape structure can generally be restored within 50–75 years by reinstating the natural fire regime. Unusually large fires would probably hasten the restoration of landscape structure, while small prescribed fires will not restore the landscape but instead will produce further alteration. 相似文献
