Conservation biology is a uniquely interdisciplinary science with strong roots in ecology, but it also embraces a value‐laden and mission‐oriented framework. This combination of science and values causes conservation biology to be at the center of critique regarding the discipline's scientific credibility—especially the division between the realms of theory and practice. We identify this dichotomy between seemingly objective (fact‐based) and subjective (value‐laden) practices as the measure‐value dichotomy, whereby measure refers to methods and analyses used in conservation biology (i.e., measuring biodiversity) and value refers to nonepistemic values. We reviewed and evaluated several landmark articles central to the foundation of conservation biology and concepts of biodiversity with respect to their attempts to separate measures and values. We argue that the measure‐value dichotomy is false and that conservation biology can make progress in ways unavailable to other disciplines because its practitioners are tasked with engaging in both the realm of theory and the realm of practice. The entanglement of measures and values is by no means a weakness of conservation biology. Because central concepts such as biodiversity contain both factual and evaluative aspects, conservation biologists can make theoretical progress by examining, reviewing, and forming the values that are an integral part of those concepts. We suggest that values should be included and analyzed with respect to the methods, results, and conclusions of scientific work in conservation biology. 相似文献

The present study investigates the concentrations and patterns of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and their metabolites in liver and plasma of two ringed seal populations (Phoca hispida): lower contaminated Svalbard population and more contaminated Baltic Sea population. Among OCPs, p,p′-DDE and sum-chlordanes were the highest in concentration. With increasing hepatic contaminant concentrations and activities of xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes, the concentrations of 3-methylsulfonyl-p,p′-DDE and the concentration ratios of pentachlorophenol/hexachlorobenzene increased, and the toxaphene pattern shifted more towards persistent Parlar-26 and -50 and less towards more biodegradable Parlar-44. Relative concentrations of the chlordane metabolites, oxychlordane and -heptachlorepoxide, to sum-chlordanes were higher in the seals from Svalbard compared to the seals from the Baltic, while the trend was opposite for cis- and trans-nonachlor. The observed differences in the OCP patterns in the seals from the two populations are probably related to the catalytic activity of xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes, and also to differences in dietary exposure. 相似文献

Degradation of toxaphene in soil from both newly contaminated (from Sweden) and aged spills (from Nicaragua) were studied. The newly contaminated soil contained approximately 11 mg kg(-1) toxaphene while the aged Nicaraguan soil contained approximately 100 mg kg(-1). Degradation was studied in anaerobic bioreactors, some of which were supplied with lactic acid and others with Triton X-114. In this study we found that the lower isomers Parlar 11, 12 were degraded while the concentration of isomer Parlar 15 increased. This supported an earlier evaluation which indicated that less chlorinated isomers are formed from more heavily isomers. Lactic acid when added to the soil, interfere with the degradation of toxaphene. Lactic acid was added; several isomers appeared to degrade rather slowly in newly contaminated Swedish soil. The Swedish soil, without any external carbon source, showed the slowest degradation rate of all the compounds studied. When Triton X-114 at 0.4 mM was added, the degradation rate of the compounds increased. This study illustrates that biodegradation of toxaphene is a complex process and several parameters have to be taken into consideration. Degradation of persistent pollutants in the environment using biotechnology is dependent on bioavailability, carbon sources and formation of metabolites. 相似文献

Summary. Queens in colonies of the small myrmicine ant, Leptothorax gredleri Mayr 1855 (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) engage in dominance interactions and form social hierarchies, in which typically only
the top-ranking queen lays eggs. Occasionally, queen antagonism escalates to violent mandible fighting, during which the sting
is used to apply Dufour gland secretions onto the cuticle of the opponent. Contaminated queens often are attacked by nestmate
workers. Here we show that the chemical composition of the Dufour gland is colony-specific and that workers can discriminate
between secretions from their own and other colonies. Our findings suggest that Dufour gland secretions are involved in the
establishment of hierarchies within a colony. When invading an alien colony the queen presumably employs the secretions during
the expulsion of the resident queen. Apparently, Dufour gland secretions play a role in intraspecific queen competition similar
to that in slave-making and inquiline formicoxenine ants, where they function as "propaganda substances" in an interspecific
context.

Indoor NO2 concentrations were measured in the kitchen, the living room and bedroom of 612 houses in two different areas in the Netherlands. In a group of housewives living in these homes, personal exposure to NO2 was measured. NO2 concentrations indoors were dependent on the presence or absence of (un)vented gas appliances. Personal NO2 exposure was only different between the two areas in the group with the lowest indoor concentrations. In this study, it was determined that gas appliances inside the house are the most important factor with respect to NO2 exposure and that outside NO2 concentration played a secondary role, except in situations where gas appliances were absent. 相似文献

AbstractWater is a key resource for all life. Recent droughts have also exemplified the importance for manufacturers to understand their impact on water resources. While most manufacturers typically know the amount of water they use in their facilities, they have little knowledge about the indirect effects they have on water resources. In this paper, the indirect impact from the automakers’ electricity use and work force on water resources is examined. Water withdrawal and consumption from electricity use by hypothetical but representative facilities around the world is quantified and analysed. Water withdrawal by the workers is also quantified and analysed. The results indicate that the water withdrawal and consumption by the workforce and caused by the use of electricity is larger than the direct water use and consumption in the facilities themselves. 相似文献

When designing energy efficient buildings it is useful to study existing climate—responsive building typologies. The wind towers or wind-catchers of Yazd city in Iran are typical examples of such a typology. Although many previous studies have investigated the performance of various types of wind catcher systems, studies based on a long-term real-life measurement can be rarely found. In this study a long-term whole year monitoring campaign on an existing full scale four sided wind catcher in Yazd was carried out in 2014–2015. Three prevailing wind directions were identified and the measured on-site wind speeds were used to estimate the wind induced natural ventilation potential of the tower. A shaft/tower airflow performance index was developed. The monitoring results were compared to the ASHRAE Standard 62:2001 ventilation rate requirement. Results show that the total ventilation rate of the wind tower surpasses the ASHRAE Standard requirements. Furthermore it shows that the shafts are exposed to the prevailing wind directions perform better. For more effective natural ventilation a wind tower with adaptable openings/shafts are proposed. 相似文献

A directive from the Swedish Government states that waste containing more than 1% of mercury shall be permanently deposited. The stabilization of mercury by conversion to a sparingly soluble compound like the sulphide is crucial to ensure long-term immobilization in a permanent storage. Immobilization by the solidification/stabilization (S/S) method and possible formation of HgS from mercury oxide or elemental mercury by reaction with a sulphur source (S or FeS) is investigated by a modified version of the NEN 7345 Dutch tank-leaching test. The diffusion of mercury during 11 months from 1-year-old mercury containing monoliths of Portland and slag cement is demonstrated. In a geologic repository under conditions representative of deep granitic bedrock (bicarbonate buffered to pH 8.6), a favourable monolith combination is slag cement with addition of the iron sulphide troilite. The apparent diffusion coefficient of mercury is estimated. 相似文献

Goal, Scope and Background Sweden has prohibited the deposition of organic waste since January, 2005. Since 1 million tons of sludge is produced every
year in Sweden and the capacity for incineration does not fill the demands, other methods of sludge management have to be
introduced to a larger degree. One common method in the USA and parts of Europe is the use of wetlands to treat wastewater
and sewage sludge. The capacity of reed beds to affect the toxicity of a complex mixture of nitroaromatics in sludge, however,
is not fully elucidated. In this study, an industrial sludge containing explosives and pharmaceutical residues was therefore
treated in artificial reed beds and the change in toxicity was studied. Nitroaromatic compounds, which are the main ingredients
of many pharmaceuticals and explosives, are well known to cause cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. Recently performed studies
have also showed that embryos of zebrafish (Danio rerio) are sensitive to nitroaromatic compounds. Therefore, we tested the sludge passing through constructed wetlands in order
to detect any changes in levels of embryotoxicity, genotoxicity and dioxin-like activity (AhR-agonists). We also compared
unplanted and planted systems in order to examine the impact of the root system on the fate of the toxicants.
Methods An industrial sludge containing a complex mixture of nitroaromatics was added daily to small-scale constructed wetlands (vertical
flow), both unplanted and planted with Phragmites australis. Sludge with an average dry weight of 1.25%, was added with an average hydraulic loading rate of 1.2 L/day. Outgoing water
was collected daily and stored at −20°C. The artificial wetland sediment was Soxhlet extracted, followed by clean-up with
multi-layer silica, or extracted by ultrasonic treatment, yielding one organic extract and one water extract of the same sample.
Genotoxicity of the extracts was measured according to the ISO protocol for the umu-C genotoxicity assay (ISO/TC 147/SC 5/WG9
N8), using Salmonella typhimurium TA1535/pSK1002 as test organism. Embryotoxicity and teratogenicity were studied using the fish egg assay with zebrafish (Danio rerio) and the dioxin-like activity was measured using the DR-CALUX assay. Chemical analyses of nitroaromatic compounds were performed
using Solid Phase Micro Extraction (SPME) and GC-MS.
Results Organic extracts of the bed material showed toxic potential in all three toxicity tests after two years of sludge loading.
There was a difference between the planted and the unplanted beds, where the toxicity of organic extracts overall was higher
in the bed material from the planted beds. The higher toxicity of the planted beds could have been caused by the higher levels
of total carbon in the planted beds, which binds organic toxicants, and by enrichment caused by lower volumes of outgoing
water from the planted beds.
Discussion Developmental disorders were observed in zebrafish exposed directly in contact to bed material from unplanted beds, but not
in fish exposed to bed material from planted beds. Hatching rates were slightly lower in zebrafish exposed to outgoing water
from unplanted beds than in embryos exposed to outgoing water from planted beds. Genotoxicity in the outgoing water was below
detection limit for both planted and unplanted beds. Most of the added toxicants via the sludge were unaccounted for in the
outgoing water, suggesting that the beds had toxicant removal potential, although the mechanisms behind this remain unknown.
Conclusions During the experimental period, the beds received a sludge volume (dry weight) of around three times their own volume. In
spite of this, the toxicity in the bed material was lower than in the sludge. Thus, the beds were probably able to actually
decrease the toxicity of the added, sludge-associated toxicants. When testing the acetone extracts of the bed material, the
planted bed showed a higher toxicity than the unplanted beds in all three toxicity tests. The toxicity of water extracts from
the unplanted beds, detected by the fish egg assay, were higher than the water extracts from the planted beds. No genotoxicity
was detected in outgoing water from either planted or unplanted beds. All this together indicates that the planted reed beds
retained semi-lipophilic acetone-soluble toxic compounds from the sludge better than the unplanted beds, which tended to leak
out more of the water soluble toxic compounds in the outgoing water. The compounds identified by SPME/GC in the outgoing water
were not in sufficient concentrations to have caused induction in the genotoxicity test.
Recommendations and Perspectives This study has pointed out the benefits of using constructed wetlands receiving an industrial sludge containing a complex
mixture of nitroaromatics to reduce toxicity in the outgoing water. The water from planted, constructed wetlands could therefore
be directed to a recipient without further cleaning. The bed material should be investigated over a longer period of time
in order to evaluate potential accumulation and leakage prior to proper usage or storage. The plants should be investigated
in order to examine uptake and possible release when the plant biomass is degraded.
