Contamination of industrial sites by wood preservatives such as chromated copper arsenate (CCA) may pose a serious threat to groundwater quality. The objective of this study was to characterise the spatial variability of As and Cr concentrations in the solid phase and in the soil water at a former wood impregnation plant and to reveal the fundamental transport processes. The soil was sampled down to a depth of 2m. The soil water was extracted in situ from the vadose zone over a period of 10 months at depths of 1 and 1.5m, using large horizontally installed suction tubes. Groundwater was sampled from a depth of 4.5m. Results showed that arsenic and chromium had accumulated in the upper region of the profile and exhibited a high spatial variability (As: 21-621 mg kg(-1); Cr: 74-2872 mg kg(-1)). Concentrations in the soil water were high (mean As 167 microg L(-1); Cr: 62 microg L(-1)) and also showed a distinct spatial variability, covering concentration ranges up to three orders of magnitude. The variability was caused by the severe water-repellency of the surface soil, induced by the concurrent application of creosote wood preservatives, which leads to strong preferential flow as evident from a dye experiment. In contrast to soil water concentrations, only low As concentrations (<12 microg L(-1)) were detected in the groundwater. High Cr concentrations in the groundwater (approx. 300 microg L(-1)), however, illustrated the pronounced mobility of chromium. Our study shows that at sites with a heterogeneous flow system in the vadose zone a disparity between flux-averaged and volume-averaged concentrations may occur, and sampling of soil water might not be adequate for assessing groundwater concentrations. Previous research has shown that plant diversity influences N and P cycles. However, the effect of plant diversity on complete ecosystem N and P budgets has not yet been assessed. For 20 plots of artificially established grassland mixtures differing in plant diversity, we determined N and P inputs by bulk and dry deposition and N and P losses by mowing (and subsequent removal of the biomass) and leaching from April 2003 to March 2004. Total deposition of N and P was 2.3 +/- 0.1 and 0.2 +/- 0.01 g m(-2) yr(-1), respectively. Mowing was the main N and P loss. The net N and P budgets were negative (-6.3 +/- 1.1 g N and -1.9 +/- 0.2 g P m(-2) yr(-1)). For N, this included a conservative estimate of atmospheric N(2) fixation. Nitrogen losses as N(2)O were expected to be small at our study site (<0.05 g m(-2) yr(-1)). Legumes increased the removal of N with the harvest and decreased leaching of NH(4)-N and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) from the canopy. Reduced roughness of grass-containing mixtures decreased dry deposition of N and P. Total dissolved P and NO(3)-N leaching from the canopy increased in the presence of grasses attributable to the decreased N and P demand of grass-containing mixtures. Species richness did not have an effect on any of the studied fluxes. Our results demonstrate that the N and P fluxes in managed grassland are modified by the presence or absence of particular functional plant groups and are mainly driven by the management. 相似文献

A case of complete karyotype discrepancy between cultured chorionic villi and amniotic in addition to fetal cells is reported. Ring chromosome 18 and monosomy 18 mosaicism was detected after amniocentesis. The pregnancy was terminated in the 23rd gestational week. Cytogenetic analysis of cultured umbilical cord tissue after termination confirmed the finding of ring chromosome 18/monosomy 18 mosaicism. In cultured umbilical blood lymphocytes monosomic cells 45,-18 were not detected and the karyotype was 46,XY,r(18). In contrast, short-term and long-term cultured chorionic villi showed a normal male karyotype of 46,XY. Solar radiation as a primary abiotic factor affecting productivity of seaweeds was monitored in the Arctic Kongsfjord on
Spitsbergen from 1996 to 1998. The radiation was measured in air and underwater, with special emphasis on the UV-B (ultraviolet
B, 280–320 nm) radiation, which may increase under conditions of stratospheric ozone depletion. The recorded irradiances were
related to ozone concentrations measured concurrently in the atmosphere above the Kongsfjord with a balloon-carried ozone
probe and by TOMS satellite. For comparison, an ozone index (a spectroradiometrically determined irradiance of a wavelength
dependent on ozone concentration, standardized to a non-affected wavelength) was used to indicate the total ozone concentration
present in the atmosphere. Weather conditions and, hence, solar irradiance measured at ground level were seldom stable throughout
the study. UV-B irradiation was clearly dependent on the actual ozone concentration in the atmosphere with a maximal fluence
rate of downward irradiance of 0.27 W m−2 on the ground and a maximal daily fluence (radiation exposure) of 23.3 kJ m−2. To characterize the water body, the light transmittance, temperature and salinity were monitored at two different locations:
(1) at a sheltered shallow-water bay and (2) at a wave-exposed, deep-water location within the Kongsfjord. During the clearest
water conditions in spring, the vertical attenuation coefficient (K
d) for photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) was 0.12 m−1 and for UV-B 0.34 m−1. In spring, coinciding with low temperatures and clear water conditions, the harmful UV radiation penetrated deeply into
the water column and the threshold irradiance negatively affecting primary plant productivity was still found at about 5–6 m
depth. The water body in spring was characterized as a Jerlov coastal water type 1. With increasing temperature in summer,
snow layers and glacier ice melted, resulting in a high discharge of turbid fresh water into the fjord. This caused a stratification
in the optical features, the salinity and temperature of the water body. During melt-water input, a turbid freshwater layer
was formed above the more dense sea water. Under these conditions, light attenuation was stronger than defined for a Jerlov
coastal water type 9. Solar radiation was strongly attenuated in the first few metres of the water column. Consequently, organisms
in deeper water are protected against harmful UV-B radiation. In the surface water, turbidity decreased when rising tide caused
an advection of clearer oceanic water. In the course of the summer season, salinity continuously decreased and water temperature
increased particularly in shallow water regions. The impact of global climate change on the radiation conditions under water
and its effects on primary production of seaweeds are discussed, since organisms in the eulittoral and upper sublittoral zones
are affected by UV radiation throughout the polar day. In clearer water conditions during spring, this may also apply to organisms
inhabiting greater depths.

Wastewater from wash down of boat hulls contains typically Cu, Zn and organometallic biocides, e.g. tributyltin (TBT). In
some cases this wastewater is led directly into the marine system. In the present paper, a cheap flocculation method (iron
flocculants) for removal of Cu and Zn from the wastewater is investigated and the method was shown successful. TBT concentration
in a sample from a German dockyard was also decreased during flocculation, but the TBT removed was already associated with
small particulates in the original sample. Low concentrations of heavy metals were obtained by flocculation: <0.05 mg Cu/l
and 0.2 mg Zn/l.
