Trichechus manatus ) in Puerto Rico is mortality due to human activities. We assessed 90 cases of manatee strandings in Puerto Rico based on
historical data and a coordinated carcass salvage effort from 1990 through 1995. We determined patterns of mortality, including
type of event, condition of carcasses, spatial and temporal distribution, gender, size/age class, and the cause of death.
The spatial distribution of stranding events was not uniform, with the north, northeast, and south coasts having the highest
numbers. Six clusters representing the highest incidence included the areas of Fajardo and Ceiba, Bahía de Jobos, Toa Baja,
Guayanilla, Cabo Rojo, and Rio Grande to Luquillo. The number of reported cases has increased at an average rate of 9.6%/yr
since 1990. The seasonality of stranding events showed a bimodal pattern, from February through April and in August and September.
Most identified causes of death were due to human interaction, especially captures and watercraft collisions. Natural causes
usually involved dependent calves. From 1990 through 1995, most deaths were attributed to watercraft collisions. A reduction
in anthropogenic mortality of this endangered species can be accomplished only through education and a proactive management
and conservation plan that includes law enforcement, mortality assessment, scientific research, rescue and rehabilitation,

The potential impact of exposure to heavy metals and health problems was evaluated at the Tar Creek Superfund site, Ottawa
County, Oklahoma, USA. Observed versus expected mortality was calculated for selected conditions in the County and exposed
cities. Excess mortality was found for stroke and heart disease when comparing the exposed County to the state but not when
comparing the exposed cities to the nonexposed rest of the County. However, sample sizes in the exposed area were small, population
emigration has been ongoing, and geographic coding of mortality data was incomplete. In an exposed community, 62.5% of children
under the age of 6 years had blood lead levels exceeding 10 μg/dl. The relationships between heavy-metal exposure and children’s
health and chronic disease in adults are suggestive that a more thorough investigation might be warranted. A number of possible
environmental and health studies are suggested, including those focusing on possible central nervous system impacts. Unfortunately,
the exposed population is dispersing. One lesson learned at this site is that health studies need to be conducted as soon
as possible after an environmental problem is identified to both study the impact of the most acute exposures and to maximize
study sample size—including those exposed to higher doses—and minimize the loss of individuals to follow-up. 相似文献

Supplementary feeding is often a knee‐jerk reaction to population declines, and its application is not critically evaluated, leading to polarized views among managers on its usefulness. Here, we advocate a more strategic approach to supplementary feeding so that the choice to use it is clearly justified over, or in combination with, other management actions and the predicted consequences are then critically assessed following implementation. We propose combining methods from a set of specialist disciplines that will allow critical evaluation of the need, benefit, and risks of food supplementation. Through the use of nutritional ecology, population ecology, and structured decision making, conservation managers can make better choices about what and how to feed by estimating consequences on population recovery across a range of possible actions. This structured approach also informs targeted monitoring and more clearly allows supplementary feeding to be integrated in recovery plans and reduces the risk of inefficient decisions. In New Zealand, managers of the endangered Hihi (Notiomystis cincta) often rely on supplementary feeding to support reintroduced populations. On Kapiti island the reintroduced Hihi population has responded well to food supplementation, but the logistics of providing an increasing demand recently outstretched management capacity. To decide whether and how the feeding regime should be revised, managers used a structured decision making approach informed by population responses to alternative feeding regimes. The decision was made to reduce the spatial distribution of feeders and invest saved time in increasing volume of food delivered into a smaller core area. The approach used allowed a transparent and defendable management decision in regard to supplementary feeding, reflecting the multiple objectives of managers and their priorities. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the contamination caused by polychlorinated naphthalenes in two polluted Mediterranean lagoons. Surface sediment samples from Venice and Orbetello lagoons were analysed using HRGC-HRMS. The levels of the sum of mono- to octa-CN ranged from 0.03 to 1.51 ng/g. Differences in PCN levels were observed as a function of the sampling site, with levels at the industrial sites exceeding those at the control sites. Although the PCN patterns and profiles resembled one another in different sediment samples, they differed considerably when compared with those in the technical PCN formulation Halowax 1014. 相似文献

A study was performed at a Gordon-Darby centralized inspection and maintenance (I/M) test lane in Phoenix, AZ, in December 1999 for the purpose of evaluating the accuracy of production Vehicle Mass Analysis System (VMAS) equipment relative to standard IM240 equipment. Simultaneous transient mass measurements were made on random vehicles using VMAS and IM240 systems on two test lanes during regular I/M testing. Cumulative mass emissions for 846 valid tests were correlated using least-squares regression analysis. Correlation indices were > 0.99 for both carbon monoxide (CO) and nitric oxide (NO) and 0.93 for hydrocarbon (HC), and the standard errors of regression were 1.38 g/mi, 0.123 g/mi, and 0.245 g/mi for CO, NO, and HC, respectively. These strong correlation results are reflected by high excess emission identification rates of 99.4% for CO, 99.3% for NO, and 94.5% for HC when applying final IM240 cut points with a < 2% error of commission for all pollutants. 相似文献

Tylosin is a macrolide antibiotic commonly used for therapeutic treatment and prophylaxis in livestock. As part of a larger ecotoxicological study, the potential phytotoxic effects of tylosin on the rooted macrophyte Myriophyllum spicatum and the floating macrophyte Lemna gibba were assessed under semi-field conditions using 15 12 000-L microcosms. Concentrations of 0, 10, 30, 300 microg/L (n = 3), and 600, 1000, and 3000 microg/L (n = 1) were evaluated as part of separate ANOVA and regression analyses over an exposure period of 35 days. Fate of tylosin was monitored over time in the highest three treatments, where dissipation followed pseudo-first order kinetics with associated half-lives ranging from 9 to 10 days. For both M. spicatum and L. gibba, tylosin was found to cause no biologically significant changes to any endpoint assessed compared to controls at a Type I error rate of 0.1. However, subsequent power analyses revealed that there was generally insufficient power to declare that there were no significant differences at a Type II error rate of 0.2. Conclusions concerning biologically significant impacts were therefore further assessed based on other statistical criteria including comparisons of percent differences between replicated treatments and controls, minimum significant and minimum detectable differences, and coefficients of variation. Based on these criteria, at an ecological effect size of >20% change, tylosin was concluded to elicit no biologically or ecologically significant toxicity to M. spicatum or L. gibba. A hazard quotient assessment indicated that tylosin poses little risk to either species of macrophyte, with an HQ value calculated to be nearly three orders of magnitude below 1 (0.002). 相似文献

Sorption and desorption of chlorinated benzenes were investigated in a series of column experiments using porous silica that had phenyl groups bonded to the surface; the mass-fraction organic carbon was 0.016. Both sorption and desorption curves were asymmetrical, but they were mirror images of each other for most experiments, indicating good sorption reversibility. The resulting breakthrough curves were fit to an advection-dispersion mathematical model, with sorption as a first-order, reversible reaction. Significantly greater tailing in the chlorinated-benzene breakthrough curves versus the salt-tracer ones was evidence of slow sorption and desorption. ΔH° values for di-, tri- and tetra-chlorobenzene were 13–21 kJ mol−1, indicative of strong van der Waals binding. Despite these small values, slow desorption was attributed to slow binding and release rather than diffusion through the bonded organic phase. Desorption rates decreased in going from di- to tri- to tetra- to penta-chlorobenzene. This decrease was significantly more than the decrease in molecular-diffusion coefficients in the same series, suggesting a chemical rather than a physical rate control. There was less difference in sorption rates through the series, suggesting an inverse relation between partition coefficient and desorption rate. ΔG° values were −17 to −23 kJ mol−1, giving TΔS° values of about 4 kJ mol−1. Thus enthalpic contributions to sorption appear to be of greater importance than entropic contributions. 相似文献

Summary The grave shortage of land suitable for development has always been a major constraint on urbanisation in Hong Kong. Rather lax or inappropriate planning controls in the past have resulted in haphazard city growth, leaving extensive areas of densely-packed tenement slums. Recent sluggish attempts at urban renewal have brought little relief. The objectives of environmental planning to rejuvenate the old districts are assessed in relation to their limitations and potential. The problems and opportunities of employing comprehensive redevelopment to upgrade environmental quality with reference to building stocks in the pre-war and post-war private residential, public housing and obsolete industrial sectors are evaluated. Cross-borehole ground penetrating radar (XBGPR) is used in monitoring a long-term vadose zone infiltration experiment at a test site in Socorro, NM in order to examine contaminant transport in the vadose zone. XBGPR attenuation tomography is conducted in order to test the ability of using images of electromagnetic attenuation for hydrogeologic investigations. The results of four pre-infiltration attenuation inversions shows standard deviations below 0.1 Np/m, and demonstrate the consistency of the XBGPR tomography technique for making time-lapse observations. Correlation to the core records indicates that XBGPR attenuation tomograms provide high-resolution images of clay distribution in the vadose zone. Water infiltration at the ground surface was initiated in February 1999 at a constant rate of 2.7 cm/day, and continued at this rate throughout the data collection experiment. Time-lapse attenuation tomograms show that attenuation increases by approximately 0.3 Np/m during the water infiltration, and indicate a snowplow effect may be occurring where salts are dissolved by the water and concentrated at the front of the plume. Seasonal temperature changes may also cause changes in electromagnetic attenuation images, and masking the evidence of water infiltration. Thus caution must be taken when using time-lapse attenuation images to interpret the movement of a water plume during a long-term experiment as temperature changes. 相似文献
