The fluorescent lamp recycling sector is growing considerably in Europe due to increasingly strict regulations aimed at inciting the consumption of low energy light bulbs and their end-of-life management. Chemical risks were assessed in fluorescent lamp recycling facilities by field measurement surveys in France, highlighting that occupational exposure and pollutant levels in the working environment were correlated with the main recycling steps and processes.The mean levels of worker exposure are 4.4 mg/m3, 15.4 μg/m3, 14.0 μg/m3, 247.6 μg/m3, respectively, for total inhalable dust, mercury, lead and yttrium. The mean levels of airborne pollutants are 3.1 mg/m3, 9.0 μg/m3, 9.0 μg/m3, 219.2 μg/m3, respectively, for total inhalable dust, mercury, lead and yttrium. The ranges are very wide. Surface samples from employees’ skin and granulometric analysis were also carried out. The overview shows that all the stages and processes involved in lamp recycling are concerned by the risk of hazardous substances penetrating into the bodies of employees, although exposure of the latter varies depending on the processes and tasks they perform. The conclusion of this study strongly recommends the development of a new generation of processes in parallel with more information sharing and regulatory measures. 相似文献

Urban lakes provide many ecosystem services, e.g., flood control, nature protection, coolness island, recreation. Hydrodynamic models will increasingly be used to enhance these benefits. We present the first validation of a three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic model on a small shallow lake with high resolution and high frequency measurements. Lake Créteil, France (area 0.4 km2, mean depth 4.5 m, and catchment area 1 km2) is a former gravel pit and now part of a regional park. The model Delft3D-FLOW was calibrated on a one-month period, with continuous measurements of temperature at five depths at the center of the lake and at three depths at two other stations, and with current speed profiles at the centre of the lake. The model was then verified on 18 1-month periods with similar temperature measurements. The model reproduced very well the temperature dynamics, including the alternation between mixing and stratification periods and internal wave patterns. The mean absolute errors over the five depths at the central point remained below 0.55°C in spring and summer, the most favorable seasons for phytoplankton growth. Horizontal temperature differences, which rose up to 3°C at the beginning of stratification periods, were also well reproduced, as well as current speeds. These results are very promising for assessing nutrient and pollutant diffusion, settling and resuspension, as well as for understanding how phytoplankton blooms start in small shallow lakes. 相似文献

Films of poly(hydroxybutyrate-co-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) and poly(propylene) (PP), PP/PHBV (4:1), blends were prepared by
melt-pressing and investigated with respect to their microbial degradation in soil after 120 days. Biodegradation of the films
was evaluated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry,
and X-ray diffraction. The biodegradation and/or bioerosion of the PP/PHBV blend was attributed to microbiological attack,
with major changes occurring at the interphases of the homopolymers. The PHBV film was more strongly biodegraded in soil,
decomposing completely in 30 days, while PP film presented changes in amorphous and interface phase, which affected the morphology. 相似文献

Barred plumage is common among bird species. It is often interpreted as a form of crypsis because pigmentation patterns are
less detectable against heterogeneous backgrounds. However, it has also been suggested that barred plumage could signal plumage
condition, because it makes irregularities in the plumage perceptually salient. Little empirical work exists on the function
of barred plumage, in part because we lack a way for quantifying the regularity of the pattern. Here, we present a method
to analyze digital photographs of barred plumage and quantify the regularity of its pattern, and also provide software to
perform the analysis. Using museum skins of five avian species, we tested under which conditions the method reliably captures
differences among conspecific males in the regularity of their barred pattern. We found that measurements of regularity were
highly repeatable when lighting conditions were standardized, unlike under variable illumination, and a relatively large area
of barred plumage was analyzed, rather than small and non-representative subsections of plumage. The range of conditions under
which the method performs well makes it adequate for use in the field, and we hope that it fosters research on the function

In October 1992, the Oceanographic Centre of Málaga of the Spanish Oceanographical Institute (IEO) started a monitoring project,Ecomálaga, which collects physical, chemical, biological and sedimentological data from the Alborán Sea shelf. The project is coordinated
with similar projects in the Atlantic and Mediterranean Centres of IEO. The ultimate objective is to, understand the long-term
changes of the essential marine-environmental parameters.
So far, nine quarterly surveys have been carried out—from October 1992 to December 1994. The following variables were registered:abiotic: location weather, water temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll a, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, silicate,biotic: zooplankton biomass and species composition, and ichthyoplankton. The granulometric composition and organic matter content
of sediments are also included.
Data are stored in a computerized data base named Ecomálaga Data Base, with contributions from geology, physics, plankton
biology and marine chemistry. The data base not only contains separate files for each research topic, but also allows for
interchange between these files, resulting in a synoptic data output. It offers the users an output in the form of synthetic
records of each station sampled.
The analysis of the data indicates seasonal influences and ainshore-offshore gradient, as well as an Atlantic influence on
the stations located in the transect closest to the Strait of Gibraltar. 相似文献

Scientific literacy can be considered as a new demand of post-industrial society. It seems necessary in order to foster education for sustainability throughout students' academic careers. Universities striving to teach sustainability are being challenged to integrate a holistic perspective into a traditional undergraduate curriculum, which aims at specialization. This new integrative, inter- and transdisciplinary epistemological approach is necessary to cultivate autonomous citizenship, i.e., that each citizen be prepared to understand and participate in discussions about the complex contemporary issues posed by post-industrial society. This paper presents an epistemological framework to show the role of scientific literacy in fostering education for sustainability. We present a set of 26 collaborative concept maps (CCmaps) in order to illustrate an instance of theory becoming practice. During a required course for first-year undergraduate students (ACH 0011, Natural Sciences), climate change was presented and discussed in broad perspective by using CCmaps. We present students' CCmaps to show how they use concepts from quantitative and literacy disciplines to deal with the challenges posed by the need of achieving a sustainable development. 相似文献
