The interaction between nitrate and ammonium uptake was examined as a function of preconditioning growth rate and nitrogen source by adding nitrate, ammonium, or both to nitrogen-sufficient,-deficient, and-starvedSkeletonema costatum (Grev.) Cleve and nitrogen-deficientChaetoceros debilis Cleve. By simultaneously measuring the internal accumulation of intermediates of nitrogen assimilation and the rates of nitrogen assimilation, the metabolic control of nitrogen uptake could be assessed. After the simultaneous addition of nitrate and ammonium to culture, both nitrate and ammonium uptake rates were decreased in comparison with the rates observed when each was added alone, although nitrate uptake was usually decreased more than ammonium uptake. Since both nitrate and ammonium uptake rates vary with time, preconditioning growth conditions, nitrogen sources present, and species, it was necessary to use several different indices to quantify inhibition. In general, ammonium inhibition of nitrate uptake inS. costatum was greatest in cultures preconditioned to ammonium and those at low growth rates, whereas ammonium uptake was inhibited most in cultures preconditioned to nitrate. In nitrogen-deficientC. debilis, nitrate uptake was more inhibited by ammonium, but uptake returned to normal rates more quickly than inS. costatum, whereas inhibition of ammonium uptake was similar. These results explain why the interaction between nitrate and ammonium uptake in the field can be so variable. Inhibition of uptake is not controlled by internal ammonium or total amino acids, nor is it related to the inability to reduce nitrate. Instead, inhibition must be determined in part by the external concentration of nitrogen compounds and in part by some intermediate(s) of nitrogen assimilation present inside the cell.Bigelow Laboratory Contribution No. 82022  相似文献

The process of deforestation in the Central Development Region (CDR) of Nepal is diverse in space and time, with rapid deforestation still occurring in areas outside the national parks and wildlife reserves. This paper identifies the spatial driving forces (SDFs) of deforestation in the CDR for 1975–2000 using satellite data of 1975 (MSS), 1990 (TM), and 2000 (ETM+) along with socio-demographic and socioeconomic variables. Radiometrically calibrated satellite images are individually classified into seven distinct classes and merged together to cover the entire CDR. Classification accuracies are also assessed. Areas of land use and cover within the areas of each Village Development Committee (VDC) and municipality represented by GIS polygons are calculated from the classified images by overlaying vector files of 1845 polygons representing sections of VDCs and municipalities in 30–1199 m, 1200–2399 m, 2400–4999 m and >5000 m elevation levels. These elevation levels were estimated from the DEM compiled from 24 ASTER scenes taken on different dates. Only the first three elevation levels are used in the analysis because area >5000 m is under permanent snow cover where human related forestry activities are almost negligible. A transition matrix is generated for 1975–1990 using classified images of 1975 and 1990 and then this product is used to further develop another transition matrix for 1990–2000 with the classified ETM+ 2000 images as the final stage. The GIS polygon layer is overlaid on the transition matrices to calculate deforestation areas for 1975–1990 and 1990–2000. Biophysical and socioeconomic information collected from various sources is then brought into a GIS platform for statistical analyses. Six linear regression models are estimated using SAS; in effect, two models for each elevation range representing the 1975–1990 and 1990–2000 periods of change to identify SDF influences on deforestation. These regression analyses reveal that deforestation in the CDR is related to multiple factors, such as farming population, genders of various ages, migration, elevation, road, distance from road to forest, meandering and erosion of river, and most importantly the conversion of forestland into farmland.  相似文献

This paper contributes to the calling literature by using self‐determination theory—a theory that makes distinctions between different types of motivation—in order to gain a better understanding of how enacting a calling may relate both positively and negatively to well‐being. We use a daily diary method novel to the calling field and a sample with a distinctive calling, Church of England clergy. We expect daily calling enactment to relate positively to daily well‐being via more autonomous forms of motivation (intrinsic and identified motivation) and negatively via less autonomous forms (introjected motivation). Furthermore, we consider how the relationship between calling enactment and motivation may be moderated by perceived competence. The hypotheses were tested using multi‐level structural equation modeling. There was strong support for calling enactment relating positively to well‐being, and this relationship was fully mediated by intrinsic and identified motivation; the hypothesized negative pathway, from calling enactment, to introjected motivation, to well‐being, was not supported. However, perceived competence was found to moderate some of the relationships between calling and the motivation types, where calling enactment is linked to lower introjected motivation at high levels of competence. Impervious surface is often used as an indicator of non-point source pollution in urban areas due to the strong relationship between percent impervious surface cover and water-quality impacts. In many cases, a threshold effect exists where water quality rapidly degrades above a given percent cover, but the exact threshold level appears to vary across regions. This study explores the relationship between pH, specific conductance, and percent impervious surface cover in the urbanizing coastal zone of New Jersey (USA) to determine the nature of the relationship in the region. The results of the analysis suggest the system is very sensitive to impervious surface, with a threshold potentially existing between 2.4% and 5.1% impervious surface cover. An examination of future conditions suggests that by 2020 water quality in more than 50% of the catchments in the study area will be negatively impacted by non-point source pollution associated with impervious surface.  相似文献

Skeletonema costatum was grown in chemostats under ammonium or silicate limitation to examine its growth kinetics and changes in cellular chemical composition at different steady-state growth rates. When the relationship between the effluent limiting substrate concentration and steady-state growth rates was examined, deviations from the simple hyperbolic form of the Monod growth equation were noted at low and high dilution rates. The data from the plot of growth rate and substrate concentration were divided into 4 regions and the relationship of these region to cell quota is discussed. Two physiological states were identified. All populations grown at D<0.05 h-1, regardless of the size of the cells or the magnitude of Q, exhibited a maximal growth rate of approximately 0.05 h-1, while populations grown at higher dilution rates (D>0.06 h-1 to 0.14 h-1). The maximal value of growth rate is obtained only in cultures grown at very high dilution rates where nutrient shift-up appears to occur, the cell quota approaches a maximum and the heterogeneous cell population becomes more homogeneous.Contribution No. 881 from the Department of Oceanography, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington 98195, USA. The vertical distributions of the spring populations of Calanus finmarchicus (Gunnerus) and C. helgolandicus Claus are described and compared. The differences we observed between the two species have probably confused the understanding of the vertical distribution and development of the populations of Calanus spp. in the shelf seas around the United Kingdom where the species occur together. The results imply that these two congeneric species have different behaviour patterns which minimise interspecific competition where the species have sympatric distributions. C. finmarchicus has its younger development stages overlying the older stages in the water column. In C. helgolandicus the converse is true; i. e., the majority of the populations of Stage I and II copepodites of the first spring generations are found below the thermocline. The biology of the chaetognath Sagitta elegans Verrill has been much researched, but detailed studies of population structure have generally been conducted in coastal water where dynamic tidal conditions may cause difficulty in interpretation of data. The resolution of sampling examining vertical distribution and diurnal migration has also been rather coarse. During a series of eight cruises to a seasonally thermally stratified sampling site in the Celtic Sea in 1978 and 1979, detailed vertical zooplankton profiles were taken to study the seasonal population structure, vertical distribution and migration of this species. The overwintering stock of S. elegans (22 to 52 individuals m-2, 0 to 90 m) had a wide range of lengths (5 to 20 mm) and matured in 1978 from early March, spawning several times before dying out by late July. Young produced by the overwintering stock started to mature in July and population numbers reached their highest in August (2483 m-2, 132.8 mg C m-2) when sea temperature peaked (17.1°C). By October, the population of S. elegans declined (284 m-2), which was thought to be due to a combination of lower sea-water temperature, competition for and availability of food, and predation. Because of the length range of the overwintering population (5 to 20 mm), it is assumed that reproduction continued at a low level over the winter, although eggs were not found in January and February, the coldest months of the year. In summer, the smallest S. elegans (2 to 6 mm) were found in the near-surface waters and did not migrate, but as their lengths increased they occupied deeper depth ranges and a portion of the population started to migrate diurnally. Individuals which did not migrate and stayed in the warmer surface waters, or those which migrated into it, matured faster than those remaining in the colder water below the thermocline. Migration to surface waters by mature individuals seemed to be stopped by high surface temperatures (17°C) and a sharp thermocline (3 C°). As sea temperature increased during the year from the winter minimum of 7.7°C, S. elegans matured at a progressively shorter length (14 mm in March 1978 to 10 mm in August).
