Years of political instability have left Lebanon with significant gaps in environmental knowledge. This paper reports new results for trace metals in bed sediments of the river Nahr-lbrahim. The drainage basin of the river Nahr-lbrahim is largely floored by karstified limestone. Metal pollution is operative within the catchment. The objectives of this study were first to identify possible sources of metals (geological and/or anthropogenic) and then to characterise the chemical partitioning of the metals in the sediments. Bed load sediments were sampled at five locations along a 13km stretch from the river mouth, during the dry season. Samples were collected on two dates, dried and then sieved into three mechanical fractions. We report total Fe, Cu, Pb and Zn contents of the <75m sediment fraction for the dry season and interpret the results in terms of geology and point and non-point discharges to the river. Total metal contents were derived from summing the concentrations of metals in the chemical fractions of the sediments. A sequential chemical extraction procedure was applied to the <75m fraction and the data showed that, except for Fe, the carbonate fraction had the largest role in metal sediment deposition. 相似文献

Analysis of material collected in settlement traps at regular intervals over a period of a year gave an estimate of the annual organic input to the bottom sediment of about 28 gC/m2 year, which is a little less than one third of the primary production in the overlying water column. The aerobic benthic community metabolism, estimated from in situ respiration measurements, was not significantly different from the carbon input. The rate of release of ammonia from the sediment was also measured in situ and would be sufficient to supply the greater part of the required input of inorganic nitrogen for photosynthesis in the water column. 相似文献

Acute static bioassays were performed using three freshwater invertebrate species (the oligochaete Lumbriculus variegatus, the fingernail clam Sphaerium corneum and the larvae Chironomus riparius) exposed separately to a variety of 14C radiolabelled contaminants. The aim of this work was to investigate if the chemicals remained as parent compounds after the treatments. Chemicals used were 2,4-dichlorophenol; 2,4,5-trichlorophenol; pentachlorophenol; pyrene; Fenpropidin, and Trifluralin. Homogenates of the whole body tissue of each organism were prepared and total radioactivity was measured. Contaminants were then extracted into organic solvents and analysed by high-pressure liquid chromatography techniques. Chromatograms showed that most of the substances extracted were present as parent compounds in S. corneum and in L. variegatus. In contrast, for C. riparius a low proportion of the chemicals was recovered as parent compounds. These results suggest that different metabolic processes could take place in the different species. 相似文献

Wild and farmed mussels, Mytilus edulis, coexist with salmon farms in Scottish sea lochs. A synthetic pyrethroid, cypermethrin, is licensed for use on fish farms to control sea lice infestations as a formulation called Excis. In this study, uptake of cypermethrin from Excis exposure is investigated through the use of gas chromatography with mass-spectrometry. The effects of Excis on mussels are also examined by measuring the neutral red retention time of lysosomes, aerial survival and shell closure. The isomeric ratios of cis:trans cypermethrin measured in mussels are around 80:20; a marked increase from 40:60 to which the mussels were exposed. This is most likely due to preferential metabolism of trans-isomers, as the same response is seen in vertebrates. There is a pronounced behavioural effect of shell closure, where mussels exposed to 1000 microg/l cypermethrin shut their shells within an hour of exposure. Arguments are presented for this effect being either a voluntary response on recognition of cypermethrin, or an effect arising from an involuntary action of cypermethrin on the adductor muscle. Even at 1000 microg/l cypermethrin, neutral red retention time and aerial survival are not affected. The data suggest that the responses of mussels shown here are unlikely to occur in the field, even at the concentrations of cypermethrin used in fish cages, for the treatment of sea lice. 相似文献

Progress toward the goal of restoring integrity to the waters in the United States has been difficult to assess. This difficulty may arise from the type of regulatory policy that has been traditionally used. With the advent of widespread wastewater treatment, the use of a planning approach employing receiving water impact standards may offer a more practical and direct means of defining and assessing integrity. Biological community response is shown to offer an integrated approach to implementing and evaluating water quality management policy. The state of Maine (USA) has revised its water quality law by utilizing biological community response to assess integrity. We examined changes in certain structural and functional aspects of the benthic invertebrate community in the Penobscot River, Maine, between 1974 and 1981. During this period, two pulp and paper manufacturers and three municipalities spent an estimated $33 million to reduce point source effluents harmful to aquatic life. We developed a biotic index based on objectively derived pollution tolerance values for resident taxa. Analysis of the benthic invertebrate community indicated that substantial improvement in water quality had resulted from pollution abatement. We established a four-group water quality classification scheme based on biotic index ranges, and showed that every site that was not in the best water quality classification in 1974 improved its classification to a better water quality group in 1981, and that the sites in the best group did not change. Relative abundances of functional feeding groups also changed, as were predicted by the river continuum theory. The effluents had acted as a “reset mechanism” that shifted polluted areas from autotrophic to more heterotrophic conditions. The direction of the shift was reversed in response to abatement efforts. Functional analyses of energy dynamics could lead to a more ecologically sound classification of water quality. 相似文献

The measurement of the Relative Penis Size Index (RPSI) in the dogwhelk Nucella lapillus (L.) depends upon reliable observations of the length of the penis (PL). Following removal of soft tissue from the shell, PL increases with time leading to a progressively greater over-estimation of the RPSI. The error is proportionally greater at low RPSI values. To retain comparability with previous data, it is suggested that dogwhelks should be examined as soon as possible after shell crushing. 相似文献
