A technique for measuring rates of RNA and DNA synthesis in sedimentary microbial communities has been adapted from methods developed for marine and freshwater microplankton research. The procedure measures the uptake, incorporation and turnover of exogenous [2, 3H]-adenine by benthic microbial populations. With minor modification, it is applicable to a wide range of sediment types. Measurement of nucleic acid synthesis rates are reported from selected benthic marine environments, including coral reef sediments (Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii), intertidal beach sands (Oahu and southern California) and California borderland basin sediment (San Pedro Basin), and comparisons are made to selected water-column microbial communities. Biomass-specific rates of nucleic acid synthesis in sediment microbial communities were comparable to those observed in water-column assemblages (i.e., 0.02 to 2.0 pmol deoxyadenine incorporated into DNA [ng ATP]-1 h-1 and 0.2 to 8.9 pmol adenine incorporated into RNA [ng ATP]-1 h-1). DNA synthesis rates were used to calculate carbon production estimates ranging from 2 g C cm-3 h-1 in San Pedro Basin sediment (880 m water depth) to 807 g C cm-3 h-1 in coral reef sediment from the Kaneohe Bay. Microbial community specific growth rate, (d-1), estimated from DNA synthesis rates in surface sediments ranged from 0.1 in San Pedro Basin to 4.2 in Scripps Beach (La Jolla, California) intertidal sand.  相似文献

During a study of midwater fish feeding in the oligotrophic North Pacific gyre in August 1978, nine specimens of a tropical-subtropical myctophid, Ceratoscopelus warmingii, were found to have been feeding on mats of diatoms, Rhizosolenia spp. Chemical analyses of the intestinal contents of several additional specimens showed significantly elevated levels of diatom degradation products. Therefore, C. warmingii, although known to feed on zooplankton, appears to be adapted for occasional herbivory. Such an adaptation is exceptional within a major ecological group of oceanic fishes that was previously thought to be exclusively carnivorous. Like omnivorous and herbivorous fishes in general, C. warmingii has a longer intestine than other myctophid species. As an adaptive response to competition from a diverse fish fauna in a low-productivity environment, occasional herbivory by C. warmingii runs counter to the theoretical expectation by expanding rather than narrowing the range of potential food types.  相似文献

The lipid content of the digestive gland and the gonad of cuttlefishes (Sepia officinalis L.) caught off the French coasts in 1979–1980 was determined and analysed by thinlayer chromatography. The total sterol and phospholipid levels were also determined. The results from immature and mature females and males were compared in an attempt to correlate variations of the lipids with sex or state of gonad maturation. The fluctuations in the lipid level of the digestive gland, which acts as a storage organ, seemed far better related to the diet than to sex or sexual maturity. In the gonads, the lipids were few and seemed to be mostly membrane constituents. However, the increase of phospholipids in the mature ovary could be related to yolk synthesis.  相似文献

A study was made on the vertical distribution of Chaetognatha in the Hilutangan Channel, based on analyses of 48 plankton samples. Thirty-min horizontal plankton tows were performed at depths of 1, 20, 50, 70 and 100 m in January 1972. Thirteen species of 3 genera of maturing and mature chaetognaths were identified and counted. Sagitta inflata was the most common and abundant species (63.0%), folloed by S. neglecta (9.7%), S. robusta (8.6%), S. regularis (5.4%), S. serratodentata (4.2%), Krohnitta pacifica (2.9%), S. bedoti (2.3%) and S. decipiens (2.0%). S. pulchra (0.7%), S. ferox (0.5%), K. subtilis (0.3%), Pterosagitta draco (0.2%) and S. hexaptera (0.2%) were represented by less than 1% each. Of these 13 species in the upper 100 m, 12 were epiplanktonic while one species, S. decipiens, is generally considered to be mesoplanktonic. Three species were classified as neritic, 3 as neritic-oceanic, and 6 as oceanic, indicating the dominant influence and strong influx of oceanic water into the Hilutangan Channel. Temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen content did not seem to influence the vertical distribution. Examination of gut contents showed that copepods, followed by arrow worms, were most common in the guts of the chaetognaths studied.  相似文献

Five standing stocks were measured together at similar latitudes and longitudes on seasonally repetitive cruises in 3 areas — western, eastern, and southern — of the eastern tropical Pacific. The stocks were chlorophyll a at 0 to 150 m depth (mg/m2), night and day zooplankton at 0 to 200 m depth (ml/1000 m3), and night crustacean micronekton and fish-pluscephalopod micronekton at 0 to 200 m depth (ml/1000 m3). The logarithms of the measurements of each stock in each area were subjected to analysis of variance with the following factors: season (2 month period), latitude, and longitude. Seasonal coverage was most comprehensive, with 7 successive periods, in the western area (approximately 16° N to 3° S latitude, 100° to 122° W longitude). Most stocks in most parts of the western area had a simple seasonal cycle of low amplitude, with a single maximum and minimum that usually differed by a factor <2; some stocks in some parts of the area exhibited no seasonal cycle; all statistically significant cycles, except for fish-plus-cephalopod micronekton, were similar in phase. In the other two areas, located broadly to the east and south of the western area, suitable measurements were made at only 2 periods (opposite seasons) of the year. There were indications of phase differences between chlorophyll a and zooplankton in the eastern area, which should be further investigated. Most standing stocks declined gradually from east to west, and were higher in known upwelling areas and areas of shoal thermocline than elsewhere.  相似文献

The tolerances of the first zoeal stage of the crab Scylla serrata (Forskal) have been investigated in 64 different temperature-salinity combinations. Exposure to temperatures above 25°C or to salinities below 17.5 caused considerable mortality; therefore, zoeae are unsuited to estuarine conditions. The larvae can tolerate temperatures down to 5°C is they are inactive below 10°C. It is suggested that 10°C is probably a lower limit and that female crabs which migrate to sea to release their eggs do not enter water with a temperature below 12°C. Hydrological conditions along the south-east coast of Africa indicate that females would, therefore, migrate less than 10 km offshore.  相似文献

The ultrastructure of the genera Althornia, Aplanochytrium, Japonochytrium, Schizochytrium and Thraustochytrium is described, and all are regarded as members of the new order Thraustochytriales Sparrow. Species considered are Althornia crouchii, Aplanochytrium kerguelensis, Hyalochlorella marina, Japonochytrium sp., Schizochytrium aggregatum, Thraustochytrium kinnei and T. striatum. All but H. marina are, on ultrastructural evidence, related genera, and some speculative suggestions are made about possible interrelationships both between the species discussed, between the Thraustochytriales and Labyrinthulales, and between these two and other major taxa.  相似文献

Uptake of 51Cr(III) is faster than uptake of 51Cr(VI), but it occurs mainly on the surface of the animals. Steady state is attained after 28 d. The resulting concentration factor is about 200. Although the uptake of 51Cr(VI) is slower, it is more intensively distributed into the organs and tissues of the animals. Steady state was not attained during the experiments (35 d); the highest concentration factor reached was about 10. The uptake of both 51Cr(III) and 51Cr(VI) seems to be passive. For both chemical forms of chromium, the loss rate is inversely proportional to the exposure time. When the uptake lasted longer, owing to the distribution of Cr(VI) into the organs and tissues, the loss rate of Cr(III) is somewhat faster relative to the loss rate of 51Cr(VI). The opposite is the case when the uptake of both forms lasts only two days. On the basis of the distribution and loss experiments, we argue that hexavalent chromium in living organisms is reduced to the trivalent form and then complexed with organic molecules.  相似文献

Alternate dense and less-dense skeletal bands in massive corals have been used for many years to record the history of growth in species such as Porites lutea and Montastrea annularis, based on the assumption that one dense band and one less-dense band is equivalent to a year's growth. This report demonstrates that specimens of Porites lutea Edwards and Haime (collected from the same neighbourhood in Phuket, Thailand, from November 1983 through November 1984) produce skeletal bands asynchronously and that one year's growth in corals from certain sites may regularly consist of four bands of varying density. The annual banding pattern observed at all sites includes the deposition of a dense band in response to high sedimentation loads and, probably, reduced light levels.  相似文献

The understanding of natural fluctuations of metal concentrations in mussels used as bio-indicators is indispensable for a good assessment of the disturbances due to pollution. We have studied thoroughly the factors which condition bioaccumulation by using controlled populations of mussels, Mytilus edulis L., sampled monthly over more than two years (March 1982–May 1984) in the Bay of Bourgneuf, France. Seasonal changes in metal levels have been recognized, maximum values being observed in winter and early spring and minimum in later spring and summer. Depending on metal and size group, the ratios between these maximum and minimum values varied between 1.56 and 3.43. The fluctuations in soft-tissue weight appear to be the main explanatory factor of seasonal variations in metal concentrations in mussels. Fluctuations in metal levels related to size of mussels were observed. Except for cadmium in mussels with a mean dry weight of soft tissues >0.2 g, a slight decrease in metal concentrations was observed for growing individuals: the regression coefficient b was -0.10, -0.11, -0.13 and -0.27 for Cd, Cu, Zn and Pb, respectively. The metals examined were rather uniformly distributed among the different groups of organs (visceral mass, gills and palps, remainder) and, consequently, several analyses of metals in different organs do not provide much more information than one analysis on the whole soft tissues. It is concluded that fluctuations related to size or season are reflected by only moderate differences in the maximum and minimum concentrations of metals in the mussels, but that they are nevertheless sufficient to conceal low chronic or short-term pollution, except at those sites where the normal environmental conditions are well-documented.  相似文献
