Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes, Mart solms) plants were employed to assess bioconcentration and genotoxicity of aquatic mercury. Plants were exposed to water contaminated with mercuric chloride (MC) or phenyl mercuric acetate (PMA) at 0.001 to 1.0 mg litre(-1), or mercury contaminated effluent from a chloralkali plant for various periods of 4 t0 96 h. Root samples taken after 4, 8, 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 h of exposure were analysed for bioconcentration of mercury spectrophotometrically, and the root meristems were fixed in aceto-ethanol for cytological analysis to determine the frequencies of cells with micronuclei (MNC). Ethyl methane sulfonate and tap water served as positive and negative controls, respectively. The results indicated that bioconcentration of mercury in root tissue was both time- and concentration-dependent, providing evidence that water hyacinth is a good absorbant of aquatic mercury. The frequency of root meristematic cells with MNC followed a concentration-response. The findings indicate the potential of water hyacinth plants for in situ monitoring and for mitigation of aquatic mercury pollution.  相似文献

Barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) was used to assess plant-availability, tissue-concentration and genotoxicity of mercury from the solid waste deposits of a chloralkali plant. Seeds of H. vulgare, presoaked in distilled water, were allowed to germinate and grow on agricultural soil mixed with solid waste containing 2550+/-339 mg Hg kg(-1) at different proportions (0.75, 1.5, 2.5 and 5%). Plants raised from germinating seeds on uncontaminated agricultural soil served as controls. On day 7, germination counts and seedling heights were recorded. The concentration of mercury in soil, and plant tissue (dry weight) were determined at different stages of plant growth from day 7 till maturity and harvest. The availability of mercury from the soil was assessed by extracting mercury at a range of pH values (2-6) and by chemical methods. The embryonic shoots excised at 36 h of germination were subjected to cytological analysis to determine mitotic index and frequency of mitoses with chromosomal aberrations. The pollen mother cells from anthers of young M1-spikes were analysed to score meiotic aberrations. Subsequently, the pollen fertility and seed set were determined. Furthermore, M2-seedlings were analysed for chlorophyll-deficient mutations. The cytogenetic analysis revealed the effects of mercury on the mitotic and meiotic chromosomes which were significantly correlated with soil-mercury. The bioconcentration of mercury in aerial tissues decreased with the age of the plant. Roots, in particular, were found to concentrate most of the mercury taken up by the plant. At the time of harvest, the bioconcentration of mercury in straw was at a minimum. The accumulation of mercury in grain, which was significant, did not increase with the increase in concentration of mercury in soil but maintained a plateau, indicating a restriction of transport of mercury through the phloem. The unique advantage with the use of Hordeum assay is that, besides assessing the germline toxicity, the assay takes into account the possible contamination of the agricultural food-chain.  相似文献

Female mate choice is regarded as a strong selective force that significantly affects male mating success. In extreme cases, mate rejection can result in sexual cannibalism. However, males may choose between their partners as well. The killing of potential female mates, i.e. reversed form of sexual cannibalism, may be related to male mate choice. We examined male mate choice in the spider Micaria sociabilis, focusing on the roles of female mating status (virgin/mated), size and age. Reversed cannibalism reached its highest frequency in the period of generation overlap, i.e. when young males from the summer generation met old(er) females from the spring generation. These results suggest discrimination against old(er) females. The frequency of cannibalism was not affected by female mating status or female size. However, larger males from the summer generation were more cannibalistic than smaller males from the spring generation. We conclude that reversed sexual cannibalism might be an adaptive mate choice mechanism and can be explained in the context of the aggressive spillover hypothesis.  相似文献

PCB 136 is an environmentally relevant chiral PCB congener, which has been found in vivo to be present in form of rotational isomers (atropisomers). Its atropselective biotransformation or neurotoxic effects linked with sensitization of ryanodine receptor suggest that it might interact also with other intracellular receptors in a stereospecific manner. However, possible atropselective effects of PCB 136 on nuclear receptor transactivation remain unknown. Therefore, in this study, atropselective effects of PCB 136 on nuclear receptors controlling endocrine signaling and/or expression of xenobiotic and steroid hormone catabolism were investigated. PCB136 atropisomers were found to exert differential effects on estrogen receptor (ER) activation; (+)-PCB 136 was estrogenic, while (?)-PCB 136 was antiestrogenic. In contrast, inhibition of androgen receptor (AR) activity was not stereospecific. Both PCB136 stereoisomers induced the constitutive androgen receptor (CAR)-dependent gene expression; however, no significant stereospecificity of PCB 136 atropisomers was observed. PCB136 was a partial inducer of the pregnane X receptor (PXR)-dependent gene expression. Here, (?)-PCB 136 was a significantly more potent inducer of PXR activity than (+)-PCB 136. Taken together, the present results indicate that at least two nuclear receptors participating in endocrine regulation or metabolism, ER and PXR, could be regulated in an atropselective manner by chiral PCB 136. The enantioselective enrichment of PCB atropisomers in animal and human tissues may thus have significant consequences for endocrine-disrupting effects of chiral ortho-substituted PCB congeners.  相似文献

PBDEs were measured in air and soil across Azerbaijan to establish contemporary concentrations at 13 urban and rural sites. Polyurethane foam passive air samplers (PUF-PAS) were deployed for a period of a month with surface soil samples collected at the same sites. Unlike organochlorine pesticides previously surveyed by our group, PBDE concentrations in both contemporary air and soil were low in comparison to recent European and Asian studies. For example, mean ∑9PBDE concentrations in air and soil were 7.13 ± 1.66 pg m?3 and 168 ± 57 pg g?1, respectively. The fully brominated BDE-209 was the most abundant congener observed in soil (174.8 ± 58.5 pg g?1), comprising ~ 96% of ∑10PBDE. However, the PAS-derived air concentrations for highly brominated congeners must be viewed with caution as there is uncertainty over the uptake rates of particle-bound chemicals using these devices. Some of the highest concentrations in air were observed at sites with the highest wind speeds and at several remote locations in the north of the country and this requires further research. Levels of BDE-47 and 99 (the two most abundant congeners in the widely used penta-formulation) were lower than levels reported elsewhere suggesting limited use/import of the penta-BDE formulation in Azerbaijan.  相似文献

The gross alpha and gross beta activities were estimated for radiological assessment of surface water quality around the proposed uranium mining site Kylleng Pyndengsohiong Mawthabah (Domiasiat), West Khasi Hills District, Meghalaya situated in a high rainfall area (12,000 mm) in India. 189 Surface water samples were collected over different seasons of the year from nine different locations covering around 100 km2. Gross beta activities were found to vary from 144 to 361 mBq/L which is much below the prescribed WHO limit of 1000 mBq/L for drinking water. Gross alpha activities varied from 61 to 127 mBq/L. These values are much below the reported gross alpha values by other countries. In about 7% of the samples the alpha activities remain exceeded the WHO guideline limit of 100 mBq/L. Surface water samples collected during the summer season of the year show higher activity whereas low activity was found from samples collected during monsoon season. Results show that all water sources are acceptable as drinking water for human consumption from the radiological point of view, the higher gross alpha concentrations in a few locations remains so only for short duration during the summer season.  相似文献

The paper presents a systematic study on suitability of various gamma lines for monitoring of 238U activity in soil samples around a uranium mineralized zone of Kylleng Pyndengsohiong Mawthabah (Domiasiat), Meghalaya in India. The area lies in a plateau region which recieves the highest average annual rainfall (12,000 mm) in the world. The geochemical behaviour of the uranium and its daughter products at such wet climatic conditions imposes restrictions to assess 238U through gamma lines of radon decay products. Soil samples were collected from nine locations around the uranium mineralization zone for analysis. The ratio of the concentration of uranium obtained from gamma energies of radium daughter products to the 63.29 keV of 234Th was found to vary from 1.01 to 2.07, which indicates a pronounced disequilibrium between uranium and radium daughters. The results obtained from various gamma energies were validated from the data generated by Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) technique. The 238U activities from the two analytical methods show a well fitted regression line with correlation coefficient 0.99 which validates the reliability of 63.29 keV energy for estimation of uranium in such conditions.  相似文献
