Combining capillary GC with ion-trap detection in the MS/MS mode allows the determination of trace levels of the highly toxic PCB congeners, CB 77, 126 and 169 in complex biological tissues, suspended matter and sediment. The high selectivity and sensitivity of MS/MS detection in the resonant and non-resonant modes yield detection limits of 60 fg, 300 fg and 200 fg for CB 77, 126, and 169, respectively.  相似文献

Ammonia toxicity resulted in the continuous mortality of Hyalella azteca for up to 10 weeks with similar mortality rates for adults and young. Growth was not reduced at concentrations below those causing chronic mortality (1 mM total ammonia in Lake Ontario water), but reproduction was reduced at concentrations as low as 0.32 mM. Chronic mortality was a function of total ammonia (or ammonium ion), and not un-ionized ammonia, when the pH was adjusted by addition of acid. However, a 1 in 10 dilution of Lake Ontario water in distilled water resulted in a 10-fold reduction in the 4 week LC50. In contrast to common practice, ammonia toxicity to Hyalella is best defined on a total ammonia basis, but variations in hardness and other ions must be taken into account.  相似文献

Stemwater running down the trunks of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) has an acidifying effect on soil near the stem. The deposition of acidifying substances may be two to four times higher close to the stem compared to in the stand in general. To study reversibility of soil acidification, 72 stumps of beech trees were chosen from five different year classes of felling (3, 6, 9, 14-15, 25-30), representing the years when stemflow ceased to affect the soil. The H(+) concentration (pH KCl) in the topsoil (0-5 cm) differed between the distances 10-30 cm and 230-250 cm from the stumps, the soil close to the stem being more acid. The longer the time since felling the smaller the differences in H(+) concentration became. This reduction in soil acidity amounted to ca. 50% after 15 years, and only small further changes occurred over the next ten years. This indicates that soil may not recover fully from acidification, or does so at a rather slow rate after the initial 15 years of recovery.  相似文献

To investigate the use of predators' stomach contents to measure the organochlorine load in free-ranging prey, the two zooplankton species Thysanoessa inermis (euphausiids) and Themisto libellula (amphipods) were collected simultaneously from the water column and from the seabird Brünnich's guillemot (Uria lomvia)'s stomach (from crop to proventriculus). The organochlorine compounds' concentrations and relative proportion of PCB-153 generally did not differ between the two sampling methods (least square mean of Sigma organochlorines=5.9 and 6.8 ng g(-1) wet weight for water column and stomach-sampled prey, respectively), indicating that the organochlorines in stomach-sampled prey were not yet affected by mechanical, chemical and bacterial degradation. Although the sample size is restricted, similar organochlorine concentrations and pattern in free-ranging and stomach-sampled prey may suggest that Brünnich's guillemots feed randomly on the zooplankton population rather than at more (or less) contaminated individuals. Alternatively or in addition, the similar concentrations and pattern suggest that the contaminant levels in Barents Sea zooplankton do not influence their behaviour to change the vulnerability to predation. In conclusion, the organochlorine concentrations and pattern in zooplankton collected from seabirds' stomach correspond with levels in free-ranging prey.  相似文献

Laboratory studies were conducted to determine the adsorption/desorption equilibrium of carbofuran between four divergently textured soils and distilled water and an aqueous solution of 0.01?mol?L?1 β-cyclodextrin using a batch equilibrium technique. The determined adsorption isotherms for silt loam soils were of L-shaped, for sandy loam soil S-shaped, in agreement with a Freundlich isotherm. In the presence of β-cyclodextrin, the adsorption of carbofuran to the four soils was lower than with distilled water. Positive hysteresis was observed in all soils with distilled water, negative hysteresis when using a solution of β-cyclodextrin as desorbent. The results indicate the potential use of β-cyclodextrin for remediation of pesticide-contaminated soils.  相似文献

Sediment samples were collected for texture, composition and nutrient such as organic carbon, total nitrogen and total phosphorus for a period of two years from three stations in Arasalar estuary. The sediment temperature, pH and nutrients were higher during summer season and lower during monsoon season. At station 1, sediment texture was loamy sand during summer and premonsoon season. At station 2, clay type soil was recorded. Whereas, at station 3, clay was observed in summer and premonsoon and then it shifted to sandy loam type soil during monsoon. Sediment nutrients were lower than that of values of various ecosystem of India.  相似文献

Research into the effects of ocean acidification (OA) on marine organisms has greatly increased during the past decade, as realization of the potential dramatic impacts has grown. Studies have revealed the multifarious responses of organisms to OA conditions, indicating a high level of intra- and interspecific variation in species’ ability to accommodate these alterations. If we are to provide policy makers with sound, scientific input regarding the expected consequences of OA, we need a broader understanding of these predicted changes. As a group of 20 multi-disciplinary postgraduate students from around the globe, with a study focus on OA, we are a strong representation of ‘next generation’ scientists in this field. In this unique cumulative paper, we review knowledge gaps in terms of assessing the biological impacts of OA, outlining directions for future research.  相似文献

In a Baltic herring (Clupea harengus membras L.) spawning ground study, carried out in summer 1982 in the northern Baltic proper, spawning herring were encountered on two line transects on June 14. The spawning behaviour of minor groups as well as of a large school was studied in situ by four divers for approximately three hours. No behavioural differences or systematic coordinated behaviour between the sexes could be detected. Most of the spawning took place in a limited depth interval, 0.5 to 4 m, and Ceramium tenuicorne was the substrate most used.  相似文献
