Three bacterial strains tolerant to the presence of 100 mg litre(-1) nickel ions were isolated from a water reclamation system. Each organism was tested for ability to accumulate nickel at the above-mentioned concentration. The organism capable of maximum nickel accumulation was identified as an Enterobacter sp. and intracellular nickel deposition by this microorganism was determined using energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX) and transmission electron microscopy. A metal-staining technique for light microscopy was developed. Further studies revealed that growth and glucose utilisation by this isolate was inhibited in culture by nickel. 相似文献

In most areas of the north-eastern Atlantic Ocean, diatoms have declined drastically in abundance in the last decade. Additionally, in areas to the north of 59°N Ceratium species and an index of total phytoplankton have also declined. South of 59°N the phytoplankton index has increased, diatoms have declined and Ceratium species have remained at a constant level of abundance. A possible explanation of the increase in the phytoplankton index at a time when the diatoms were declinig south of 59°N is the development of unidentified phytoplankton organisms such as microflagellates. As many of the variables influencing phytoplankton standing crop are governed in turn by the prevailing weather, the phytoplankton changes may well be a consequence of the general deterioration, since 1940, of North Atlantic weather. Changes in phytoplankton which may be attributed to an amelioration of climate since 1971 are evident as yet only in the southern North Sea. 相似文献

Nitrogen regeneration by two surf zone mysids,Mesopodopsis slabberi andGastrosaccus psammodytes, was determined under laboratory conditions. The mysids were collected from the lower Sundays River estuary, South Africa, from early spring 1984 to late summer 1985. The forms of nitrogen excreted and the effects of mass, temperature and feeding on excretion rate were determined for each species at three experimental temperatures. Comparison of the forms of nitrogen excreted revealed only slight differences between species, with ammonia the major form and urea and amino acids the secondary excretory products in both cases. Mass significantly influenced the rate of ammonia excretion at all experimental temperatures, with no significant difference in slope (common b=0.602) detected between species. During the day sediment deprivation resulted in a 15% and 20% increase in mean ammonia excretion rates of juvenile and adultG. psammodytes respectively, whereas no significant differences were found at night. The mean ammonia excretion rates of fedM. slabberi andG. psammodytes were 2 and 2.5 times higher than starved excretion rates, respectively.G. psammodytes andM. slabberi recycle 139 to 150 g N per running meter of surf zone per year and 1 007 to 1 208 g N m-1 yr-1, respectively. Sediments of various newly discovered deeps in the Red Sea were analyzed for the occurrence of denitrifying bacteria. The samples were collected in 1972 during the Valdivia cruises. Among the 27 different samples investigated, 17 revealed both coccoid and rod-shaped bacteria when enriched in complex nutrient broth (with 10% NaCl). Denitrifiers were recorded abundantly in the sediments, their population decreasing from some 106/g in the surface material to only a few in the subsediment. A total of 16 pure cultures of denitrifying bacteria were isolated from the Suakin-and Thetis-deeps and studied morphologically, physiologically and biochemically. Genetics (molar percentage of guanine plus cytosine, % GC) and numerical taxonomy were included to reveal relationships and improve taxonomic classification. Fifteen isolates were described as Gram-negative, aerobic and facultative anaerobic (with NO

as H+-acceptor), polarly flagellated rods (Pseudomonas spp.); one was an inmotile, Gram-positive, facultative anaerobic coccus. None of the 15 Pseudomonas-isolates could be identified with one of the denitrifying species so far described and recognized.
