Molasses-based distilleries are one of the most polluting industries generating large volumes of high strength wastewater called vinasse. Different processes covering anaerobic, aerobic as well as physicochemical methods have been employed to treat this effluent. This study evaluated the microbial communities present in the vinasse during different stages of its treatment by traditional and molecular methods. The analysis of the efficiency of each treatment was performed by physicochemical parameters and toxicity analysis. The treatment of vinasse was performed in the following steps: high flow fermentation; filtration; chemical flakes; low-flow fermentation; filtration; and neutralization. The physicochemical analysis in different stages of the vinasse treatment demonstrated that phases of treatment influenced the performance of the evaluated parameters. Among the 37 parameters, 9 were within the limits established by the Commission for Environmental Policy of Minas Gerais, Brazil (COPAM), especially BOD (96.7% of pollution reduction), suspended solids (99.9%), pH, copper (88%), iron (92.9%), and manganese (88%). Some parameters, even after treatment, did not fit the maximum allowed by legislation. The microbial population decreased reaching 3 log CFU/ml present in the steps of the flakes chemical and disinfection treatment of vinasse. Lactobacillus brevis and Pichia kudriavzevii were present in all stages of the treatments, showing that these microorganisms were resistant and demonstrated that they might be important in the treatment of vinasse. The vinasse showed a significant reduction of pollution load after the disinfection treatment however still should not be discarded into water bodies because the high values of tannins and sediment solids, but suggest the use of the effluent in the cooling coil during the distillation process of the beverage.  相似文献

Sea urchins are a key group of herbivores in both temperate and tropical food webs because they control macroalgal cover, and consequently influence primary productivity and phase shifts on reefs. Despite being abundant on southwestern Atlantic reefs, sea urchin distributions, and their association with abiotic and biotic variables, are poorly known. In this study, sea urchin assemblages were surveyed in 2011 at multiple depths at eight sites in Arraial do Cabo (Brazil, 22°57′S/41°01′W), with sites split between a colder, more wave-exposed location, and a warmer, more sheltered location. The influence of this large-scale physical gradient, along with changes in depth and substrate complexity, on sea urchin densities was then investigated. Predator biomass was low and did not vary significantly among sites. Among the seven species recorded, Paracentrotus gaimardi, Echinometra lucunter and Arbacia lixula were dominant. Linear mixed-effects models indicated that location was important, with mid-sized P. gaimardi individuals and A. lixula more common at cooler, exposed sites and E. lucunter more abundant at warmer, sheltered sites. Sea urchin densities typically decreased with increasing depth, probably caused by changes in factors such as light, wave exposure, and sedimentation. Substrate complexity had a positive effect on the abundance of all species, presumably because of the increased availability of refuges. Physical gradients have important consequences for urchin distributions and their ecological functions at relatively small spatial scales on these reefs, and should be incorporated into herbivore monitoring programmes. Research is also required to examine how differential sea urchin distributions affect benthic dynamics.  相似文献

Most hypotheses explaining the general gradient of higher diversity toward the equator are implicit or explicit about greater species packing in the tropics. However, global patterns of diversity within guilds, including trophic guilds (i.e., groups of organisms that use similar food resources), are poorly known. We explored global diversity patterns of a key trophic guild in stream ecosystems, the detritivore shredders. This was motivated by the fundamental ecological role of shredders as decomposers of leaf litter and by some records pointing to low shredder diversity and abundance in the tropics, which contrasts with diversity patterns of most major taxa for which broad-scale latitudinal patterns haven been examined. Given this evidence, we hypothesized that shredders are more abundant and diverse in temperate than in tropical streams, and that this pattern is related to the higher temperatures and lower availability of high-quality leaf litter in the tropics. Our comprehensive global survey (129 stream sites from 14 regions on six continents) corroborated the expected latitudinal pattern and showed that shredder distribution (abundance, diversity and assemblage composition) was explained by a combination of factors, including water temperature (some taxa were restricted to cool waters) and biogeography (some taxa were more diverse in particular biogeographic realms). In contrast to our hypothesis, shredder diversity was unrelated to leaf toughness, but it was inversely related to litter diversity. Our findings markedly contrast with global trends of diversity for most taxa, and with the general rule of higher consumer diversity at higher levels of resource diversity. Moreover, they highlight the emerging role of temperature in understanding global patterns of diversity, which is of great relevance in the face of projected global warming.  相似文献

There are many industrial sites where open aggregate conical piles exist to store granular materials, like coal, industrial residuals, or other minerals. Usually these storage piles are placed in open areas, making them susceptible to wind erosion, which can create health, environmental, and/or economical concerns. It is common to minimize the dust emission through the placement of windbreaks in the vicinity of the storage piles, which reduces the wind speed in the vicinity of the pile’s surface. In this work, some experimental results from a wind tunnel study on the erosion of a conical sand pile, exposed or protected by a fence with porosities of 0, 70, and 83%, are shown. For the sheltered cases, the windbreak was placed at several distances from the pile’s leading edge, ranging from H to 4H, where H is the initial height of the non-eroded pile. The evolution of the shape of the sand pile is shown, at different instances in time, and the pile deformation quantified, using a novel experimental setup developed for wind erosion studies. This information might be regarded as a useful dataset for the benchmark of computational models aiming to produce the transient simulation of the aeolian erosion of stockpiles. The CFD results are comprised of the modeling of several experimental scenarios. The computational results for the surface wind velocity show a good correlation with the initial deformation of the pile. Based on the results, the isocontours of (u s /u r ) presented might be regarded as a good basis for the estimation of the pile shear velocity.  相似文献

The present study evaluated the mutagenic potential of surface water from the Lucrecia dam. The Tradescantia-micronucleus (Trad-MCN) test and CBMN assay in human peripheral blood lymphocytes were applied, corresponding to an in vivo and in vitro system, respectively. Heavy metals and some physicochemical properties were also measured. Water samples were collected in November 2009 (dry season) and May 2010 (rainy season) at three different points. Results of both assays for raw water showed positive responses for the points analyzed when compared to the negative control. The CBMN assay showed that diluted water was still able to induce a significant increase in micronucleus frequency. For both assays, the highest mean MN was observed in the dry season. Chemical analyses detected an increase in heavy metal levels at the sampling points and in the different seasons. These findings indicate the presence of genotoxins, such as heavy metals, in the water, which may be affecting the entire ecosystem, as well as human health. More prolonged monitoring is recommended in order to better characterize this public water supply.  相似文献

Although the application of complex integrated models to wastewater systems is useful, it is often difficult to implement and not always suitable for the design of new systems or for their rehabilitation. Integrated simple approaches that allow assessing the environmental performance of urban wastewater systems may be advantageous, especially during the initial phases of the system planning process. This paper presents an original, straightforward approach that can be used for planning, design and operation of urban wastewater systems. The INtegrated Simplified Approach (INSA) combines the concepts of performance indicators with mass balances and can be applied to wastewater systems as a management support tool, particularly in situations where there is lack of data, economic limitations or time constraints. The INSA was applied to the Algés-Alcantara wastewater system to evaluate its environmental performance and to simulate the individual or combined impact of the rehabilitation measures proposed, thus defining their priority. The results clearly indicate that, despite the investment already made upgrading the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), the proposed interventions must be implemented to ensure an acceptable environmental performance of the system. In addition, the results demonstrate the significant pollution loads present in stormwater, frequently higher than the pollution loads discharged into receiving waters during dry weather.  相似文献
