ABSTRACT: A typical single family residence in Tucson, Arizona, was retrofitted to incorporate low-water-use fixtures and water reuse systems. The use of municipal water was reduced by 53 percent to 53 gallons per capita per day (gpcd) and total water use at the home was reduced by 33 percent to 74 gpcd.  相似文献

The lateral down-slope movement of water, NO3 -, NH4 +, SO4 2-, H+ and DOC through an ablation till was examined from 1987 to 1990 for a one hectaresoil catena on a steep hillslope with uniform forest cover at the Turkey Lakes Watershed (TLW), Ontario, Canada. Natural variation in the export of nutrients from the soil profile via soil water to Little Turkey Lake was assessed in relation to nutrient distribution in soil at different topographic positions.Subsurface throughflow exhibited dramatic differences in nutrientconcentrations and fluxes with slope position, largely reflectingthat of the soil horizons through which the water passed. GreaterNO3 -, SO4 2-, and DOC concentrations in subsurface water in the upper, well-drained hillslope were a reflection of enrichment by contact with more acidic, more developed podzols, and more favorable soil physical and biological conditions for NO3 - retention in solution.Nutrient inputs to the lake were strongly influenced by increaseddown-slope transport of water, and increased SO4 2-, N, and C retention in wetter, less-developed podzolic soils that characterize lower slope positions. An understanding of water movement and soil development variation withtopographic position was required to accurately estimate nutrient budgets for steep slopes at TLW.  相似文献

Summary We observed in the field how resident females of the social wasp, Polistes fuscatus, treated female nestmates, non-nestmate first cousins, and unrelated non-nestmates. Behavioral observations were made 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 11 weeks after the emergence of a colony's first workers. Resident females were highly tolerant of female nestmates but highly intolerant of unrelated non-nestmates throughout the post-worker-emergence phase of the colony cycle. First cousins were treated either highly tolerantly or highly intolerantly, although most cousins ( 63%) were treated highly intolerantly. The treatment of cousins suggests that they are treated either tolerantly (like nestmates) or intolerantly (like unrelated non-nestmates) depending on whether they fall above or below an acceptance threshold, respectively. Resident females did not significantly change their tolerance nestmates, first cousins, and unrelated females between different observation periods. However, all conspecifics were generally treated the most intolerantly 11 weeks post-worker-emergence, a time in the colony cycle when combs no longer contain brood. This decreased tolerance and its associated variance patterns late in the colony cycle are consistent with a more restrictive acceptance threshold. The optimal level of the acceptance threshold appears to be a compromise between the fitness consequences of accepting unrelated non-nestmates and rejecting one's nestmates. In a laboratory study, resident females were equally tolerant of female nestmates on and off the comb but significantly less tolerant of unrelated females on the comb than off the comb. Thus, females can modify their tolerance rapidly in different recognition contexts. In a second laboratory study, resident females were equally intolerant of unrelated females, regardless of whether they were from colonies 50 m or 50 km distant.Offprint requests to: G.J. The statistical analysis of continuous data that is non-negative is a common task in quantitative ecology. An example, and our motivation, is the weight of a given fish species in a fish trawl. The analysis task is complicated by the occurrence of exactly zero observations. It makes many statistical methods for continuous data inappropriate. In this paper we propose a model that extends a Tweedie generalised linear model. The proposed model exploits the fact that a Tweedie distribution is equivalent to the distribution obtained by summing a Poisson number of gamma random variables. In the proposed model, both the number of gamma variates, and their average size, are modelled separately. The model has a composite link and has a flexible mean-variance relationship that can vary with covariates. We illustrate the model, and compare it to other models, using data from a fish trawl survey in south-east Australia.  相似文献

Coffee beans were treated with the fungicide chlorothalonil (2,4,5,6‐tetrachloro‐1,3‐benzene‐dicarbonitrile) and the residues were determined by high‐performance liquid Chromatograph (HPLC). Several techniques including Soxhlet extraction (SE), microwave‐assisted extraction (MAE) and accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) were compared for the extraction of residues. A column clean‐up procedure was developed to remove the co‐extractives in the extract before HPLC analysis. The overall mean recoveries from extracts obtained by SE, MAE and ASE were 89.2 ±3.9, 88.4 ±1.9 and 82.8 ±0.3, respectively. The results show that MAE followed by HPLC is a viable alternative to the commonly used SE and gas Chromatographic analysis for the determination of chlorothalonil in coffee.  相似文献

Diel and lunar reproductive patterns of the Caribbean and Pacific sergeant major damselfishes Abudefduf saxatilis and A. troschelii respectively, were studied i the San Blas and Northern Perls Islands of Panama in 1981 and 1982. These are sister-species that have diverged since the uplift of the isthmus of Panama. Caribbean A. saxatilis females typically complete spawning in the nests of males earlier in the morning than do Pacific A. troschelii females. Spawning is rarely observed during the afternoon. Hatching occurs four or five days after spawning in the Caribbean species, and after four days in the Pacific species. In both, fry hatch during the hour following sunset. There also are differences in lunar patterns of spawning between the two species. The Caribbean A. saxatilis spawns throughout the month, exhibiting no lunar periodicity. In the Pacific A. troschelii spawns within nine days on either side of new moon. During the wet season, reproductive activity at a site spans three or four days, but is extended to eight or more days during dry season upwelling in the Bay of Panama. Thus, reproductive synchrony is much greater within than between colonies of the Pacific sergeant major, particularly in the wet season. Reproductive synchrony in the Pacific sergeant major might be beneficial because fry hatching at dusk encounter favorable tides for transport away from reef-based predators around new moon, or because reproductive synchrony reduces the risk of predation on unhatched embryos in nests guarded by males. Tidal amplitude and the rate of predation on embryos in nests are greater in the Pacific.  相似文献

The structure of the spermatozoa of 11 species from five families of archaeogastropod (Haliotidae, Fissurellidae, Trochidae, Turbinidae, Phasianellidae) has been examined using transmission electron microscopy. All sperm are of the primitive, or ect-aquasperm type and each species has a sperm head (nucleus and acrosome) with unique morphology. Furthermore, the results from the present study together with those published in the literature reveal that, although there are a few exceptions, the size (length to breadth ratio) and spape of the nucleus and acrosome of sperm of species within each family are similar. It is therefore possible to identify members of a family and differentiate between families using sperm morphology. The intrafamilial similarities and interfamilial differences in sperm structure indicate that a spermiocladistic study of the suborder Vetigastropoda could provide interesting insights into the phylogenetic relationships of this group.  相似文献
