The problem of vertical distribution and the movements of copepods was studied from several plankton samples collected by vertical hauls in the Saronic Bay, Greece during two cruises (8 to 17 August and 21 November to 1 December, 1969). The species, whose vertical movements were analyzed, were divided into 3 groups: (1) Those which perform diurnal vertical migration (generally psychrophilic species found in summer samples in deeper layers and in reduced numbers). In autumn, the number of specimens is generally increased and many individuals reach the surface at night. From surface hauls it is known that these species abound in night surface hauls during the cold period. (2) Those species which execute a seasonal vertical migration. These, too are, in general, psychrophilic and found in summer in the deep water layers. In autumn, the population of the upper layers increases. From surface hauls it is known that these species abound in day and night surface samples. (3) Copepods which remained at the surface layer in both seasons of our cruises. These species are thermophilic and are absent from surface hauls during the cold period.  相似文献

Sergestes lucens Hansen, a mesopelagic shrimp fished commercially in Suruga Bay, Japan, was successfully reared from egg to post-larval stage V under laboratory conditions. Chaetoceros ceratosporum and Artemia nauplii were found to be satisfactory food in the laboratory during rearing. Growth, mortality, food preference, and feeding and swimming activities during the various developmental stages were investigated. Temperature changes greatly affected the speed of development and the mortality of the larvae. The optimum temperature range for larval development was 18° to 25°C. The growth rate (length) of larval stages was as rapid as 0.16mm/ day at 20 °C and 0.21 mm/day at 23 °C. The larvae first started feeding on phytoplankton at elaphocaris stage I, and then gradually became predators in the post-larval stages. It is suggested that the critical period for the species occurs in the elaphocaris stages. Environmental data, vertical distribution of the species, and data obtained from laboratory experiments suggest that the fluctuation in the abundance of S. lucens is greatly influenced by the water temperature at around 50 m from June to August. Feeding mechanisms observed in the post-larval stages are described.  相似文献

Over a period of 6 weeks in aquaria, Portuguese oysters Crassostrea angulata, accumulate 65Zn to a greater extent than do native Ostrea edulis, although intake rates for any particular organ in either species are quite similar. The general distribution pattern of radioactivity in the tissues is similar to that observed for stable zine and 65Zn in other oyster species, concentration occurring to the greatest extent in gills and mantle, and least in muscle. The observed equilibrium concentrations and biological half-lives are considerably less than those measured in the natural environment, and the significance of this and its bearing on the mechanism of uptake is discussed. Cobalt and iron depress the rate of 65Zn uptake by both oyster soft tissues and the shell. The limiting effect in soft tissues is probably due to competition for sites at the actual point of uptake. The distribution of 65Zn in tissue subcellular fractions separated by centrifugation shows the greatest concentration of the radioisotope in the insoluble tissue components of gills, mantle and heart. Appreciable amounts of 65Zn are associated with tissue proteins.  相似文献

Distribution of chlorophyll pigments, carotenoids and abundance of phytoplankton in relation to certain environmental factors of the nearshore waters off the central west coast of India (latitudes 15°30 to 18°30N) were studied monthly at 7 stations during 1970/1971. Changes in the hydrographical factors and the biological processes occurring in the region during different months appear to be influenced by the pattern of upwelling along the northern and southern parts of the west coast of India. The pigment concentration shows a marked decrease in October, but is followed by a slow but steady rise, which reaches its maximum in April/May. A slightly smaller maximum is noticed in December/January. The composition of various chlorophyll pigments and carotenoids indicated the physiological state of phytoplankton populations during different months in the region investigated. Abundance of specific phytoplanktonic elements, consisting mainly of diatoms, in space and time, characterises the waters of the central west coast of India, indicating a clear succession of species.  相似文献

Tilapia mossambica (Peters), acclimated to and tested in fresh water at 30°C, maintained a routine respiratory quotient (R Q) of about unity and an ammonia quotient (A Q) (Vol. NH2/Vol. O2) of about 0.2 at high ambient oxygen concentrations. At low oxygen concentrations (below 2 ppm) R Q and A Q increased sharply to values of 8 and 1, respectively (at 0.6 ppm), indicating a close relationship of increase in anaerobic energy utilization and increase in protein metabolism at inadequate oxygen concentrations. T. mossambica (8 cm), exercised continuously with intervening sampling and flushing stops for 6 h, at a swimming speed of about 2 body lengths/sec, derived some anaerobic energy throughout the exercise (R Q: 1.2), utilizing more protein the longer the exercise. The coupling of the increased protein metabolism and anaerobic energy utilization may be of advantage in preventing acidosis and also in conserving sodium (Na+) in fish.Part of this work was included in a paper presented at the Centennial Meeting of The American Fisheries Society, September 13–16, 1970, New York.  相似文献

The effects of temperature on oxygen consumption and spontaneous rhythmic activity have been investigated in various stages of the life histories of 3 species of jellyfish from the Chesapeake Bay, USA. All 3 species clearly show the ability to acclimate positively to temperature change. Thermal sensitivity of metabolism in the winter medusa Cyanea capillata fulva is fairly low at temperature intervals which are experienced in nature. Polyps of the two summer medusae, Chrysaora quinquecirrha and Aurelia aurita, show reduced metabolic sensitivity at temperatures normally accompanying high developmental activity and the onset of strobilation.  相似文献

Several species of phytoplankton were grown in unialgal, but not bacteria-free, cultures. These clones when exposed to varying salinities, from 5 to 35, showed a marked increase in their rates of photosynthesis at low salinities. The optimum requirement of salinity, however, varied in different species. Observations on the relative abundance of phytoplankton in an estuary, where the salinity changes were fairly large, confirmed that, within limits, waters with low salinities support a greater abundance of phytoplankton in nature. The wide adaptability of phytoplankton to changes in salinity corresponds to the conditions brought about by the monsoon system along the southwest coast of India, where large dilutions are associated with the enrichment of water with nutrients.  相似文献

The mouthparts of Jaera albifrons Leach, Jaera ischiosetosa Forsman, Jaera praehirsuta Forsman and Jaera forsmani Bocquet were examined with the light microscope and the Stereoscan electron microscope, and were found to be identical in all species. The structure of the mouthparts indicate that all four species feed by scouring and abrading algal or bacterial films from rocks or Fucus. Food, therefore, does not seem to be an isolating factor involved in the microdistribution of the four species on a shore.  相似文献

Hemoglobin content of 3 Nile fishes — Tilapia nilotica Linnaeus, Lates niloticus Linnaeus and Labeo niloticus Forskal— were examined. Clear differences in hemoglobin and hematocrit values were observed, and seasonal variation in the hemoglobin content of Lates niloticus and Labeo niloticus were noticed. There is a correlation between hematocrit value and hemoglobin content of the 3 species examined. The chloride content is higher in the species with lower hemoglobin content.  相似文献

Observations and experiments on the associative behavior of the fish Cryptocentrus cryptocentrus (Valenoiennes) and the shrimp Alpheus djiboutensis De Man from the Red Sea were carried out in artificial burrows. A signal system, bringing about correlated behavior in fish and shrimp, consisted of antennal contact of the shrimp with the fish, tail undulations by the fish and, finally, emergence of the shrimp. The shrimp emerged from the burrow only in the presence of the fish. A constant antennal contact was maintained by the partners while the shrimp was outside the burrow. Emerging from the burrow, the shrimp pushed the fish towards the entrance. Following visual stimulation, the shrimp always retreated back into the burrow with the fish. However, the further back the shrimp was located inside the burrow, the less intense was its retreat with the fish. In the absence of the fish, visual stimulation of the shrimp had no effect. Cleaning of fish by shrimp was observed within the burrow.  相似文献
