Dynamics of toxic heavy metals in different compartments of a highly urbanized closed aquatic system
This paper deals with the dynamics of chromium, nickel, copper and lead among the different components namely water, surface sediments, submerged and free floating macrophytes and fish of the twin manmade lakes, Upper and Lower lakes, of Bhopal (M.P., India). Some basic parameters of water and sediment have also been studied. The basin of the lake system is densely populated and the water is used for various purposes including drinking. Ni and Pb along with nitrate in both lakes are significantly higher than the drinking water quality criteria of USEPA. The concentration of the metals in the sediments is noticeably higher than that present in the adjoining rock, particularly Ni and Pb. There is a significant uptake of metals by the macrophytes (Eichhornia crassipes and Hydrilla verticillata) and fish (Labeo rohita and Oreochromis niloticus) mainly in summer. The fish of Lower lake (O. niloticus) is unfit for human consumption. The data have been statistically treated. Principle component analysis and cluster analysis were performed to define the origin of metals and to assess the relationship among the sites. Overall the Lower lake is more polluted than the Upper lake. In aggregate, the lake system is under an environmental stress due to certain practices. 相似文献

Deplorable quality of groundwater arising from saltwater intrusion, natural leaching and anthropogenic activities is one of the major concerns for the society. Assessment of groundwater quality is, therefore, a primary objective of scientific research. Here, we propose an artificial neural network-based method set in a Bayesian neural network (BNN) framework and employ it to assess groundwater quality. The approach is based on analyzing 36 water samples and inverting up to 85 Schlumberger vertical electrical sounding data. We constructed a priori model by suitably parameterizing geochemical and geophysical data collected from the western part of India. The posterior model (post-inversion) was estimated using the BNN learning procedure and global hybrid Monte Carlo/Markov Chain Monte Carlo optimization scheme. By suitable parameterization of geochemical and geophysical parameters, we simulated 1,500 training samples, out of which 50 % samples were used for training and remaining 50 % were used for validation and testing. We show that the trained model is able to classify validation and test samples with 85 % and 80 % accuracy respectively. Based on cross-correlation analysis and Gibb’s diagram of geochemical attributes, the groundwater qualities of the study area were classified into following three categories: “Very good”, “Good”, and “Unsuitable”. The BNN model-based results suggest that groundwater quality falls mostly in the range of “Good” to “Very good” except for some places near the Arabian Sea. The new modeling results powered by uncertainty and statistical analyses would provide useful constrain, which could be utilized in monitoring and assessment of the groundwater quality. 相似文献

The chemical, physical and biological characteristics of water with respect to its suitability describe its quality. Concentration of pesticides or fertilisers degrades the water quality and affects marine life. A comprehensive environmental data information system helps to perform and complete common tasks in less time with less effort for data verification, data calculations, graph generation, and proper monitoring, which helps in the further mitigation step. In this paper, focus is given to a web-based system developed to express the quality of water in the imprecise environment of monitoring data. Water samples were analyzed for eight different surface water parameters, in which four parameters such as pH, dissolved oxygen, biochemical oxygen demand, and fecal coliform were used for the water quality index calculation following MPCB Water Quality Standards of class A-II for best designated use. The analysis showed that river points in a particular year were in very bad category with certainty level of 0–38 % which is unsuitable for drinking purposes; samples in bad category had certainty level that ranged from 38 to 50 %; samples in medium to good category had certainty levels from 50 to 100 %, and the remaining samples were in good to excellent category, suitable for drinking purposes, with certainty levels from 63 to 100 %. 相似文献

Regular exercise improves physiological processes and yields positive health outcomes. However, it is relatively less known that particulate matter (PM) exposure during outdoor exercises may increase several respiratory health problems depending on PM levels. In this study, the respiratory deposition doses (RDDs) in head airway (HD), tracheobronchial (TB), and alveolar (AL) regions of various PM size fractions (<10, <2.5, and <1 μm; PM10, PM2.5, and PM1) were estimated in healthy male and female exercisers in urban outdoors and within house premises. The highest RDDs were found for PM during morning hours in winter compared with remaining periods. RDDs in AL region for males and females, respectively, were 34.7 × 10?2 and 28.8 × 10?2 µg min?1 for PM10, 65.7 × 10?2 and 56.9 × 10?2 µg min?1 for PM2.5, and 76.5 × 10?2 and 66.3 × 10?2 µg min?1 for PM1. The RDD values in AL region were significantly higher in PM1 (27%) compared with PM2.5 (13%) and PM10 (2%) during exercise in all periods. This result showed that the morning peak hours in winter are more harmful to urban outdoor exercisers compared with other periods. This study also showed that the AL region would have been the main affected zone through fine particle (PM1) to all the exercisers.Implications: Size-segregated particle concentrations in urban outdoors and within house premises were measured. The highest respiratory deposition doses (RDDs) were found for PM during morning hours in winter compared with remaining periods. During light exercise, the RDD values in alveolar (AL) region for PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 for male exercisers were significantly higher, 20.4%, 15.5%, and 15.4%, respectively, compared with female exercisers during morning peak hours in winter. 相似文献

Biological treatment of high-strength nitrogenous wastewater is challenging due to low growth rate of autotrophic nitrifiers. This study reports bioaugmentation of Thiosphaera pantotropha capable of simultaneously performing heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification (SND) in sequencing batch reactors (SBRs). SBRs fed with 1:1 organic-nitrogen (N) and NH4 +-N were started up with activated sludge and T. pantotropha by gradual increase in N concentration. Sludge bulking problems initially observed could be overcome through improved aeration and mixing and change in carbon source. N removal decreased with increase in initial nitrogen concentration, and only 50–60 % removal could be achieved at the highest N concentration of 1000 mg L?1 at 12-h cycle time. SND accounted for 28 % nitrogen loss. Reducing the settling time to 5–10 min and addition of divalent metal ions gradually improved the settling characteristics of sludge. Sludge aggregates of 0.05–0.2 mm diameter, much smaller than typical aerobic granules, were formed and progressive increase in settling velocity, specific gravity, Ca2+, Mg2+, protein, and polysaccharides was observed over time. Granulation facilitated total nitrogen (TN) removal at a constant rate over the entire 12-h cycle and thus increased TN removal up to 70 %. Concentrations of NO2 ?-N and NO3 ?-N were consistently low indicating effective denitrification. Nitrogen removal was possibly limited by urea hydrolysis/nitrification. Although the effect of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) on the oxidation of dissolved sulfur dioxide by oxygen has been the subject of many investigations, this is the first study which examines the effect of a large number of precisely 16 hydroxy compounds. Wilt is a serious disease of the guava crop in India. Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. psidii and F. solani have been reported as causative agents of this disease. In this study, 42 isolates each of F. oxysporum f. sp. psidii and F. solani, were isolated from guava cultivars and characterized by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) method. Thirty RAPD primers were tested in the genome of Fusarium spp. and the number of scorable bands for corresponding primer ranged from 1-8 with an average of 5 bands per individual. DNA band size ranged from 200 bp to 5090 bp. A 0.21 per cent polymorphism was found in individual isolates of F. solani indicating that the 42 isolates were similar. However, a 2.58 percent polymorphism among individual isolates of F. oxysporum f.sp. psidii showed a higher level of genetic diversity. Cluster analysis of the RAPD band patterns clearly separated the isolates of F. oxysporum f.sp. psidii into three clusters. Two clusters were formed with F. solani isolates, showing a higher degree of similarity. Unique fingerprint profiles generated by the PCR-RAPD can be exploited for genetic characterization purposes. 相似文献

The global response to the 12 January 2010 earthquake in Haiti revealed the ability to mobilise medical teams quickly and effectively when academic medical centres partner non-governmental organisations (NGO) that already have a presence in a zone of devastation. Most established NGOs based in a certain region are accustomed to managing the medical conditions that are common to that area and will need additional and specialised support to treat the flux of myriad injured persons. Furthermore, an NGO with an established presence in a region prior to a disaster appears better positioned to provide sustained recovery and rehabilitation relief. Academic medical centres can supply these essential specialised resources for a prolonged time. This relationship between NGOs and academic medical centres should be further developed prior to another disaster response. This model has great potential with regard to the rapid preparation and worldwide deployment of skilled medical and surgical teams when needed following a disaster, as well as to the subsequent critical recovery phase. 相似文献

Forest cover is viewed as a resource for the nation as it provides ecosystem services. However, it becomes a burden and retards development for the people of the area, particularly the hills, where such forests flourish.
