In conditions of low water motion (<0.06 ms–1), the availability of essential nutrients to macroalgae, and thus their potential productivity, may be limited by thick diffusion boundary-layers at the thallus surface. The ability of macroalgae to take up nutrients in slow moving water may be related to how their blade morphology affects diffusion boundarylayer thickness. For the giant kelp, Macrocystis integrifolia Bory, morphological measurements indicate that blades of plants from a site exposed to wave action are thick, narrow and have a heavily corrugated surface. In contrast, blades from a site with a low degree of water motion are relatively thin, with few surface corrugations and large undulations along their edges. The aim of our work was to test the hypothesis that morphological features of M. integrifolia blades from a sheltered site allow enhanced inorganic nitrogen uptake at low seawater velocities compared to blades with a wave-exposed morphology. The rate of nitrate and ammonium uptake by morphologically distinct blades of M. integrifolia, from sites that were sheltered from and exposed to wave action, were measured in the laboratory at a range of seawater velocities (0.01 to 0.16 ms–1), between March and May 1993. For both sheltered and exposed blade morphologies, nitrate and ammonium uptake rates increased with increasing seawater velocity, reaching a maximum rate at 0.04 to 0.06 ms–1. Uptake parameters V max (maximum uptake rate) and U 0.37 (the velocity at which the uptake rate is 37% of the maximum rate) were estimated using an exponential decay formula. These parameters were similar for both blade morphologies, at all seawater velocities tested. Additional measurements suggest that the nitrogen status of M. integrifolia blades from wavesheltered and exposed sites were similar throughout the experimental period, and thus nitrogen status did not affect the rate of nitrogen uptake in these experiments. on the basis of these results, we conclude that blade morphology does not enhance nitrogen uptake by M. integrifolia in conditions of low water motion. Potential effects of diffusion boundary-layers on kelp productivity are discussed.  相似文献

Minimizing soil ammonia (NH3) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emission factors (EFs) has significant implications in regional air quality and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions besides nitrogen (N) nutrient loss. The aim of this study was to investigate the impacts of different N fertilizer treatments of conventional urea, polymer-coated urea, ammonia sulfate, urease inhibitor (NBPT, N-(n-butyl) thiophosphoric triamide)-treated urea, and nitrification inhibitor (DCD, dicyandiamide)-treated urea on emissions of NH3 and GHGs from subtropical wheat cultivation. A field study was established in a Cancienne silt loam soil. During growth season, NH3 emission following N fertilization was characterized using active chamber method whereas GHG emissions of N2O, carbon dioxide (CO2), and methane (CH4) were by passive chamber method. The results showed that coated urea exhibited the largest reduction (49%) in the EF of NH3-N followed by NBPT-treated urea (39%) and DCD-treated urea (24%) over conventional urea, whereas DCD-treated urea had the greatest suppression on N2O-N (87%) followed by coated urea (76%) and NBPT-treated urea (69%). Split fertilization of ammonium sulfate-urea significantly lowered both NH3-N and N2O-N EF values but split urea treatment had no impact over one-time application of urea. Both NBPT and DCD-treated urea treatments lowered CO2-C flux but had no effect on CH4-C flux. Overall, application of coated urea or urea with NPBT or DCD could be used as a mitigation strategy for reducing NH3 and N2O emissions in subtropical wheat production in Southern USA.  相似文献

When an airshed is affected by a spatially complex distribution of emitting sources, the angular distribution of tracer fluxes about one or more receptor sites may usefully distinguish the relative contributions of different upwind sources at that site. Such “fluxgrams” complement chemical-mass-balance receptor models to assist decisions affecting optimum emission controls and receptor placement. The technique is illustrated here with Bsp/PM10 in a heavily industrialized valley where, surprisingly, fluxgram analyses show that winter haze exceedances are associated with nighttime winds draining into the industrial lower valley from an upwind residential community.  相似文献

While riparin vegetation can play a major role in protecting land, water and natural habitat in catchments, there are high costs associated with tree planting and establishment and in diverting land from cropping. The distribution of costs and benefits of riparian revegetation creates conflicts in the objectives of various stakeholder groups. Multicriteria analysis provides an appropriate tool to evaluate alternative riparian revegetation options, and to accommodate the conflicting views of various stakeholder groups. This paper discusses an application of multicriteria analysis in an evaluation of riparian revegetation policy options for Scheu Creek, a small sub-catchment in the Johnstone River catchment in north Queensland, Australia. Clear differences are found in the rankings of revegetation options for different stakeholder groups with respect to environmental, social and economic impacts. Implementation of a revegetation option will involve considerable cost for landholders for the benefits of society. Queensland legislation does not provide a means to require farmers to implement riparian revegetation, hence the need for subsidies, tax incentives and moral suasion.  相似文献

Desiccation enhanced nitrogen uptake rates in intertidal seaweeds   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Desiccation increased nitrate and ammonium uptake rates upon resubmergence in late summer populations of the intertidal macroalgae Gigartina papillata (C.Ag.) J.Ag., Enteromorpha intestinalis (L.) Grev., Fucus distichus L., and Pelvetiopsis limitata (Setch) Gardn. The ratio of nitrogen uptake rates in desiccated plants to rates in hydrated plants (controls) was correlated with the position of the species in the intertidal zone. Gracilaria pacifica Abbott., the species occurring at the lowest shore level, showed no enhancement of nitrogen uptake following desiccation. The high intertidal species such as P. limitata and F. distichus showed a two-fold enhancement of nitrate and ammonium uptake following more extensive desiccation (>30%) and continued uptake even following severe desiccation (50 to 60%). After the plants had been desiccated, the increase in nitrate uptake rates upon submergence lasted much longer than a similar enhancement of ammonium uptake. The duration of the enhanced nitrate uptake was similar to the time required for total rehydration but the uptake rates were not related to the state of rehydration. The potential contribution that this enhanced nitrogen uptake following desiccation could make to total nitrogen procurement for growth is discussed. The experiments were carried out in 1979 or 1980 and repeated in 1981.This paper is dedicated to Dr. R. F. Procedures have been developed for the extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxins from Protogonyaulax spp. grown in batch culture. Using these procedures, the toxin content of two isolates of P. tamarensis (NEPCC 183 and 255) and one isolate of P. catenella (NEPCC 355) were examined. Total toxin and individual toxin concentrations were measured for each isolate during the exponential and stationary phases of growth in batch culture. The total toxicity of each isolate as measured by HPLC analysis was found to agree with toxicity as determined by the standard mouse bioassay. Two of the isolates (255 and 355) were found to be toxic and the third (183) was non-toxic. The toxic isolates (255 and 355) both showed higher average total PSP toxin content during the exponential phase (35 and 23 fmol toxin cell-1, respectively) than during the stationary phase (21 and 8 fmol toxin cell-1, respectively). These cultures differed dramatically in their toxin composition. P. tamarensis (255) contained a large proportion of the N(21) sulfo toxins (B1, B2, C1, C2) while P. catenella (355) contained primarily Gonyautoxins 1 through 4. The percent composition of individual toxins was found to be constant throughout the growth cycle for both toxic isolates, even though the total toxin concentration varied. Our results suggest that PSP toxin profiles might be useful as chemotaxonomic indicators.  相似文献
