Abstract: Conservation of rare plant species often involves small, local populations dispersed within apparently suitable habitat. We used enzyme electrophoresis to study genotypic diversity in 32 populations of Calystegia collina , a self-incompatible clonal plant endemic to serpentine substrate in northern California's Coast Range. Genotypic diversity within a population was a good predictor of seed set by randomly marked flowers. Ramets from the most abundant genotypes in a population were most likely to produce flowers, but flowers from abundant genotypes were less likely to produce seed capsules than were flowers from rarer genotypes. These results are consistent with previous findings that reproductive success in C. collina is limited by the availability of compatible pollen. On small serpentine outcrops supporting only one or two populations, C. collina did not show reduced genotypic diversity or heterozygosity compared with populations on large outcrops supporting many populations. Instead, genotypic diversity and outcrop size had strong but independent influences on reproductive success. Although large serpentine outcrops contain more populations and provide better conditions for flower and seed production, significant diversity of unique genotypes clearly exists in isolated serpentine outcrops. Our findings suggest that plant conservation strategies must take into account the natural distribution of populations. The effects of habitat fragmentation on C. collina and other plant species that occur naturally in small, discrete patches may be unlike those that have been documented in more recently fragmented species.  相似文献

A study of fungi associated with wastes from a rubber processing factory was carried out. Rubber processing wastes, natural rubber waste serum (NRWS) and washing effluents were obtained from Greenpark Rubber Industries Ltd, Umutu, Delta State, Nigeria. The NRWS was collected from seepage from starks of coagulated rubber in the factory and effluents were collected from the four tanks used for washing the coagulated rubber. Three fungal species, Mucor racemous, Mucor sp. and Aspergilus niger, were isolated from the NRWS. From the effluents collected from the four wash tanks, five fungal species were isolated. Mucor recemous, Mucor sp., Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus, sp. and Rhizopus sp. Of all the species isolated, the Mucor species were found capable of utilizing NRWS as a growth substrate. Optimal growth of Mucor in NRWS was achieved at near-neutral pH of 7.1. It was also observed that as biomass of Mucor increased in NRWS, the BOD of NRWS decreased. Pollution strength of the wastes as determined by biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total solids were found to be highest with NRWS (440 and 4520) and wash tank (A) (370 and 3520) respectively.  相似文献

Recent models of the evolution and dynamics of family structure in cooperatively breeding vertebrates predict that the opening of breeding vacancies in cooperatively breeding groups will result in (1) dispersal movements to fill the reproductive position, and (2) within-group conflict over access to reproduction. We describe the behavioral and demographic changes that followed the creation of breeding vacancies in three wild groups of cooperatively breeding common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus). Replacement of the breeding female was rapid when no adult females remained in the group, but did not occur for several months when other adult females were present. Aggression of adult animals towards same-sex potential immigrants was associated with a period of reduced affiliation, increased intragroup agonism, no intragroup sexual behavior, and frequent extragroup copulations. This ended with the fissioning of groups along sexual lines. After replacement, multiple males copulated with multiple females and vice versa, with no increases in sexually related aggression. Female-female conflict was resolved through infanticide. The lack of direct conflict between males is consistent with cooperative polyandry. After a breeding vacancy appeared, marmoset groups showed conflict of interests among group members similar to those shown by cooperatively breeding birds, but they used different behavioral mechanisms to resolve those conflicts. Our data provide important evidence from a cooperatively breeding mammal to support Emlen’s model for the evolution of vertebrate families, but they suggest that species-specific inter- and intrasexual competitive strategies should be considered before the model can be applied to other cooperatively breeding vertebrates. Nitrate and ammonium uptake rates were measured for three year-classes of the perennial macrophyte Laminaria groenlandica Rosenvinge, collected from nitrogen-depleted waters in Barkley Sound, British Columbia, Canada, in summer 1981. A time course of uptake rate revealed that ammonium uptake was high during the first hour and then decreased for all three year-classes; the opposite pattern was exhibited for the time course of nitrate uptake rate. Nitrate uptake rate increased linearly with nitrate concentration up to the highest level tested (60 M). The nitrate uptake rate of first-year plants was three times higher than second- and third-year plants; ammonium uptake rates showed similar patterns to those for nitrate. The interaction between nitrate and ammonium was examined for first-year plants. Nitrate and ammonium were taken up simultaneously and uptake rates were identical and equal to uptake rates when only nitrate or ammonium was present in the medium. Therefore, first-year plants are able to take up twice as much inorganic nitrogen per unit time when both nitrate and ammonium are present. First-year plants showed significant diel periodicity in ammonium uptake rates, whereas second- and third-year plants showed no periodicity in nitrate or ammonium uptake rates.  相似文献

Toxin production was measured by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) when the marine dinoflagellate Protogonyaulax tamarensis (NEPCC 255) was grown under nitrogen or phosphorus limitation. The major toxins found in P. tamarensis (255) consisted of (N21-SO 3 - )STX (11%), (N21-SO 3 - )NeoSTX (44%), and [(N21-SO 3 - )GTX2 plus (N21-SO 3 - )GTX3] (20%). Total toxin content on a per cell basis was high for cultures in log phase (30 to 40 fmol cell-1) and then decreased to ca 20 fmol cell-1 as the cultures entered stationary phase. There was a gradual decrease in the toxin content per cell during nitrogen-limited stationary phase to ca 3 fmol cell-1 or less. Phosphorus-limited cultures showed a markedly different response than nitrogen-limited cultures. Toxin content in P-limited cells dramatically increased at the start of stationary phase, reaching levels 3 to 4 times that observed in control and nitrogen-limited cultures. These results cannot be explained by changes in the average cell volume. Eventhough dramatic effects on the total toxin concentration were observed in response to nutrient limitation (N or P), the toxin composition (on a percent basis) remained constant. This suggests that the individual toxin composition of a given isolate is a fixed genetic trait and not a transient response to changing environmental factors.  相似文献

Nitrogen uptake, assimilation and accumulation were studied in three populations of Gracilaria pacifica Abbott in Bamfield Inlet, British Columbia, Canada, over three summers, 1979–1981. Two of these populations were in the intertidal one high and one low, and the third was a subtidal cultured population. Nitrate uptake rates, internal nitrate content and nitrate reductase activities were highest in the low intertidal population. Time-courses of uptake and uptake kinetics were studied. Both nitrate and ammonium were taken up simultaneously. Thalli from the high-intertidal population showed enhanced nitrate and ammonium uptake following mild desiccation, and greater tolerance to desiccation in terms of maintaining nitrogen uptake after severe desiccation. Transplants were made to determine the effect of intertidal height and geographic location on responses to desiccation, nitrogen uptake, assimilation and accumulation. Nitrate and ammonium uptake rates were dependent on intertidal height and geographic location. Transplanting up the intertidal increased nitrate uptake and nitrate reductase activity, but decreased the nitrate content of the thalli. There were few significant differences in ammonium uptake rates, and ammonium, amino acid, and soluble-protein content of the various populations. All high-intertidal populations, transplanted or natural, showed enhanced nitrate uptake rates following desiccation. Enhanced ammonium uptake rates following desiccation were restricted to the high-intertidal thalli in only one geographic location. Tolerance to higher levels of desiccation also appeared to be intertidal height-dependent, but required more than five weeks to fully develop or disappear.  相似文献

Six cases of sonographically diagnosed fetal sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) are presented and illustrate the variable features of fetal SCT. The sonographic findings assisted the parents and perinatal team in making decisions, and in two of the cases the children survived after elective Cesarean section and prompt neonatal resection of the tumors. None of the patients showed signs of malignant degeneration of the teratoma or metastases. Fetal SCT no longer should be considered a uniformly fatal condition. The literature on sacrococcygeal teratoma detected after birth indicates that the mortality rate is correlated with the degree of extension of the tumor. Therefore, the classification of sonographically diagnosed fetal SCT according to its size and position is important for decisions regarding pregnancy management.  相似文献

Although polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are no longer manufactured, they are still entering the environment. In some compartments of the environment, PCB concentrations are a serious concern. This is especially true in compartments which accumulate PCBs, and in food items consumed by humans and wildlife. Also, there are situations in which management decisions require rapid, sensitive, accurate measurements, which can be made in real time under field conditions. Methods to use an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for PCBs were developed and applied to sediments and fish muscle homogenates collected from the Great Lakes. The extraction methods developed can be applied in the field with non-hazardous solvents, in the absence of sophisticated laboratory equipment. The method detection limit for PCBs in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) extracts of sediment was 0.9 mg/kg. For PCBs in isopropanol extracts of fish tissue, the method detection limit was 0.6 mg/kg. The resolution of the ELISA was 0.83 mg/kg at 1.1 mg/kg and 1.6 mg/kg at 1.7 mg/kg, for sediment and fish tissue, respectively.  相似文献

Novel aerial methane (CH4) detection technologies were used in this study to identify anomalously high-emitting oil and gas (O&G) facilities and to guide ground-based “leak detection and repair” (LDAR) teams. This approach has the potential to enable a rapid and effective inspection of O&G facilities under voluntary or regulatory LDAR programs to identify and mitigate anomalously large CH4 emissions from a disproportionately small number of facilities. This is the first study of which the authors are aware to deploy, evaluate, and compare the CH4 detection volumes and cost-effectiveness of aerially guided and purely ground-based LDAR techniques. Two aerial methods, the Kairos Aerospace infrared CH4 column imaging and the Scientific Aviation in situ aircraft CH4 mole fraction measurements, were tested during a 2-week period in the Fayetteville Shale region contemporaneously with conventional ground-based LDAR. We show that aerially guided LDAR can be at least as cost-effective as ground-based LDAR, but several variable parameters were identified that strongly affect cost-effectiveness and which require field research and improvements beyond this pilot study. These parameters include (i) CH4 minimum dectectable limit of aerial technologies, (ii) emission rate size distributions of sources, (iii) remote distinction of fixable versus nonfixable CH4 sources (“leaks” vs. CH4 emissions occurring by design), and (iv) the fraction of fixable sources to total CH4 emissions. Suggestions for future study design are provided.

Implications: Mitigation of methane leaks from existing oil and gas operations currently relies on on-site inspections of all applicable facilities at a prescribed frequency. This approach is labor- and cost-intensive, especially because a majority of oil and gas–related methane emissions originate from a disproportionately small number of facilities and components. We show for the first time in real-world conditions how aerial methane measurements can identify anomalously high-emitting facilities to enable a rapid, focused, and directed ground inspection of these facilities. The aerially guided approach can be more cost-effective than current practices, especially when implementing the aircraft deployment improvements discussed here.  相似文献
