Tuzla geothermal basin is situated in north-western Turkey on the Biga Peninsula, which is located at the west end of the Northern Anatolian Fault system. Soil and water samples were collected between August 2003 and June 2004 to initiate development of a geochemical profile of surface and subsurface waters in the geothermal basin and radionuclide concentrations in soils. All water samples were found to fall within Turkish Water Quality Class 4, meaning they were remarkably contaminated for any water consumption sector (industrial, human use or agricultural) based on sodium and chloride ions. Such waters could be used only after appropriate water treatment. The water samples are of the chloride type in terms of geochemical evaluation. Preliminary geochemical evidence shows that the N-S flowing part of the Tuzla River acts as a natural barrier within the basin. Heavy metal concentrations in the soil samples show slight elevations, especially those obtained from the east part of the basin where thermal springs are dominant. Geochemical calculations were carried out with PHREEQC software to determine equilibrium concentration of chemical species and saturation indices, by which it is suggested that chloride is the most important ligand to mobilize the heavy metals in the studied system. In addition, the activity concentration and gamma-absorbed dose rates of the terrestrial naturally occurring radionuclides were determined in the soil using gamma-ray spectrometry. The soil activity ranged from 42.77 to 988.66 Bq kg(-1) (averaging 138 Bq kg(-1)) for ( 238 )U, 13.27 to 106.31 Bq kg(-1) (averaging 32.42 Bq kg(-1)) for ( 232 )Th, and 99.28 to 935.36 Bq kg(-1) (averaging 515.44 Bq kg(-1)) for ( 40 )K. The highest value of ( 238 )U was found in the soil samples obtained from an area close to the hot spring.  相似文献

The vast coastal and marine resources that occur along the southern edge of Bangladesh make it one of the most productive areas of the world. However, due to growing anthropogenic impacts, this area is under considerable environmental pressure from both physical and chemical stress factors. Ship breaking, or the dismantling and demolition of out-of-service ocean-going vessels, has become increasingly common in many coastal areas. To investigate the extent of ship breaking activities in Bangladesh along the Sitakunda coast, various spatial and non-spatial data were obtained, including remote sensing imagery, statistical records and published reports. Impacts to coastal and marine life were documented. Available data show that ship breaking activities cause significant physical disturbance and release toxic materials into the environment, resulting in adverse effects to numerous marine taxonomic groups such as fish, mammals, birds, reptiles, plants, phytoplankton, zooplankton and benthic invertebrates. Landsat imagery illustrates that the negatively impacted coastal area has grown 308.7 % from 367 ha in 1989 to 1,133 ha in 2010. Physicochemical and biological properties of coastal soil and water indicate substantially elevated pollution that poses a risk of local, regional and even global contamination through sea water and atmospheric transport. While damage to the coastal environment of Bangladesh is a recognized hazard that must be addressed, the economic benefits of ship breaking through job creation and fulfilling the domestic demand for recycled steel must be considered. Rather than an outright ban on beach breaking of ships, the enterprise must be recognized as a true and influential industry that should be held responsible for developing an economically viable and environmentally proactive growth strategy. Evolution of the industry toward a sustainable system can be aided through reasonable and enforceable legislative and judicial action that takes a balanced approach, but does not diminish the value of coastal conservation.  相似文献

Because environmental pollution caused by plastic waste is a major problem investigations concerning biodegradable packaging are important and required. In this study, the biodegradation of PCL composite films with organic (glycerol monooleate and oleic acid) and inorganic additives (organo nano clay) was investigated to understand which additive and the amount of additive was more effective for biodegradation. The relationship between the degree of crystallinity and the effect of additives on the biodegradability of polycaprolactone (PCL) was examined. PCL composite films were prepared using organo nano clay (0.1–0.4–1–3 wt%) and oleic acid (1–3–5 wt%) or GMO (1–3–5 wt%). The 35 films prepared with PCL (P), clay (C), oleic acid (O), or glycerol monooleate (G) are coded as P_C#wt%_O (or G)#wt%. The composite films, P_C0.4_O5 contains 0.4 wt% clay and 5 wt% oleic acid and the P_C3_G1 contains 3 wt% clay and 1 wt% glycerol monooleate. The biodegradation of PCL films in simulated soil was studied for 36 months. The films were periodically removed from the simulated soil and film thicknesses, weight losses, visual changes, crystal structures, and a functional group analyses were performed. PCL composite films are separated into three groups, depending on degradation time, (1) films that degraded before 8 months (fast degradation), (2) films that degraded around 24 months (similar to neat PCL), and (3) films that take longer to degrade (slow degradation). The films in the first group are PCL films with 1 and 3 wt% clay additive and they begin to biodegrade at the 5th month. However, a composite film of PCL with only 0.4 wt% clay and 5 wt% GMO addition has the shortest degradation time and degraded in 5 months. The films in the last group are; P_G3, P_G5, P_C0.1, P_C0.1_O1, and P_C0.1_O5 and they took around 30 months for biodegradation. It was observed that increasing the organo nanoclay additive increases the biodegradability by disrupting the crystal structure and causing a defective crystal formation. The addition of GMO with organo nano clay also accelerates biodegradation. The addition of organo nano clay in an amount as small as 0.1 wt% acts as the nucleating agent, increases the degree of crystallinity of the PCL composites, and slows the biodegradation period by increasing the time.  相似文献
