Central-place foraging theory has been unable to explain the load selection behavior of leaf-cutting ants (Atta spp., Attini: Formicidae). We suggest that this is due to incomplete consideration of the sequence of behaviors involved in resource acquisition by these ants. Unlike most central-place foragers, leaf-cutting ants do not return to their nests with food. Instead, the leaf fragments they gather must be processed within the nest to convert them to substrate for fungal gardens. We have shown previously that leaf fragment size affects the rate of distribution and processing of leaf tissue inside laboratory nests of Atta colombica. Including these tasks in the calculation of foraging rate may help explain load selection and other features of central-place foraging by Atta colonies. Here we develop a mathematical model of the complete sequence of external and internal tasks that lead to addition of substrate to fungal gardens. Using realistic parameter values, the leaf fragment sizes predicted to maximize a colony's rate of foraging in this broad sense correspond well with the mean fragment sizes actually collected by Atta colonies in the field. The optimal fragment size for global performance in the model is below the size that would maximize the delivery rate by above-ground foragers. The globally optimal size also fails to maximize the rate of either fragment distribution or fragment processing within the nest. Our results show how maximum collective performance of an ensemble of linked tasks may require behavior that would appear suboptimal in a piecemeal analysis of tasks. 相似文献

Local medical systems are key elements of social-ecological systems as they provide culturally appropriate and locally accessible health care options, especially for populations with scarce access to biomedicine. The adaptive capacity of local medical systems generally rests on two pillars: species diversity and a robust local knowledge system, both threatened by local and global environmental change. We first present a conceptual framework to guide the assessment of knowledge diversity and redundancy in local medicinal knowledge systems through a gender lens. Then, we apply this conceptual framework to our research on the local medicinal plant knowledge of the Tsimane’ Amerindians. Our results suggest that Tsimane’ medicinal plant knowledge is gendered and that the frequency of reported ailments and the redundancy of knowledge used to treat them are positively associated. Few data are available to quantify the transfer of both natural and anthropogenic radionuclides to detritivorous invertebrates to facilitate estimation of the internal dose to such biota in models used to assess radiation exposure. To enhance the available data, activity concentrations of 137Cs, 40K, 90Sr, 239?+?240Pu, 241Am, 235U and 238U were measured in ants (Formicidae) and corresponding undisturbed soil collected from the Zlatibor mountain in Serbia and ant/soil concentration ratios (CR) calculated. The 241Am concentration ratios for ants were fourfold higher than those calculated for ants in a previous study whereas they are similar to the more numerous data previously reported for a range of detritivorous invertebrates in other studies. CR values for 137Cs in ants were similar to the few other reported values and slightly lower than those for a range of detritivorous invertebrates. Those for 239?+?240Pu were slightly higher than those for ants in two other studies but they were close to upper limit of a range of data reported for detritivorous invertebrates. Levels of ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B: 280–315 nm) reaching the earth’s surface have increased over the past few decades due to ozone depletion. It is well documented that exposure to UV-B radiation increases mortality in marine fish larvae. However, few studies have examined sub-lethal effects of UV-B radiation such as, for example, the possibility that it affects prey consumption by fish larvae. Atlantic cod larvae were exposed to a sub-lethal level of ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B: 280–315 nm) for 15 h. After the exposure, rotifers (4/mL) were fed to cod larvae at three different post-exposure intervals (20 min, 3 and 6 h). Trials were replicated three times for each post-exposure interval. The number of rotifers in the gut and the percent of empty guts (number of fish with empty gut/number of fish examined × 100) were analyzed. Results were compared to those of unexposed fish (the control treatment). UV-B exposed cod larvae had consumed significantly fewer rotifers than control fish at all post-exposure intervals. There was no significant difference in the frequency of empty guts between fish in the UV-B treatment versus fish in the control treatment at any of the post-exposure time points (although the difference at 20 min post-exposure was borderline significant). These observations suggest that cod larvae exposed to sub-lethal levels of UV-B have lower net energy gain which may lead to reduced growth rate and possibly poorer survival. 相似文献
