Water samples from rivers, streams, springs, and shallow wells in Alayi-Ovim area of southeast Nigeria have been analyzed for Pb, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mg, PO4, NO3, CO3, SO4, Cl, and pH. The analyses were carried out using atomic absorption spectrometer and Hach Direct Reading Equipment. Results of the analyses from the area conform to the WHO (1995) standards for drinking water. However, the results show relative enrichment of Ca, pH, Mg, CO3, and Cl. Low values were obtained for Fe, SO4, and NO3. While the Cl and Pb enrichment in the area north of Alayi-Ovim axis is attributed to proximity to the lead–zinc and chloride-rich formations of the Turonian Eze-Aku and the Albian Asu River; the Ca, Mg, SO4, and CO3 enrichment in Southern part of Alayi-Ovim is due to the limestone-bearing Late Maastrichtian Nsukka Formation. Furthermore, the very low values of less than 5 ppm for these characters in water in the central region correlate well with the relatively clean Maastrichtian quartz arenite Ajali Sandstone Formation. The Pb–Zn and Cl incursions into the water system from the Older Albian Asu River/Turonian Eze-Aku Formations in the northern part of Alayi-Ovim area and the leaching of Mg, and Ca into the water system in the Maastrichtian limestone area in the south thus constitute geochemical indices for chemical pollution and mineral exploration for brine and dolomitic limestone in the area.  相似文献

This research focuses on the effect of debris-flow on thevarious hydrogeochemical processes occurring at Cross-River as aresult of disposal of industrial and household wastes as well as sewage into the river. It also focuses on development anddetermination of the saline nature of the rivers dry land. The study is carried out by a survey at different depths of theriver for water and soil samples analysis. The results show that concentrations of cations and anionsreasonably high and uniform except for nitrates which is quitehigh due to agricultural activities occurring in the study areas. Also Mg and SO4 ions are high due to reactions within thecolluvium include ion exchange of calcium for sodium in basalclays; dissolution of sodium chloride from dust – derived saltparticles in the clay-rich colluvium reactions. The Electrical conductive shows that Cross-River containsdissolved solids. Soil analysis indicates the presence of K, Ca,Mg, and Cl. pH values were also deducted from soil samples (6.30–6.45).  相似文献

Breast milk is known to discharge dioxins from the human body. However, to date, no direct comparison has been made of the concentrations of dioxin analogues in breast milk obtained from identical population after successive deliveries. We present here follow-up survey results of PCDDs, PCDFs, and dioxin-like PCBs concentrations in human breast milk samples from 35 women living in Tokyo from whom samples had been obtained and analyzed to determine the corresponding concentrations in the past. The average concentrations of total PCDDs, PCDFs, dioxin-like PCBs were 8.5, 5.5, 11 TEQ pg/g fat for the first samples and 5.4, 4.0, 6.6 TEQ pg/g fat for the second samples, respectively. The degrees of reduction of total PCDDs and total dioxin-like PCBs were higher than that of total PCDFs because 1,2,3,7,8-PeCDD, 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF and 3,3',4,4',5-PeCB (#126), which were the predominant congeners among PCDDs, PCDFs, and dioxin-like PCBs, respectively, had different degrees of reduction. Moreover we observed a significant increase of the concentrations of PCDDs, PCDFs, and dioxin-like PCBs in samples from three women in this follow-up survey, and the patterns of increased isomers differed among the three samples. It was conjectured that the increase of the concentrations was due mainly to dietary intake between deliveries. It is important for pregnant women to have a balanced diet to mitigate the exposure of infants to these chemicals.  相似文献
