New PbO2, Support for the Measurement of Sulfation

Since 1966, the Division of Laboratories of the Department of Health of the City of Montreal is carrying on measurements of gaseous pollutants. In order to efficiently use the technical staff that our administrators wanted to devote to the fight against air pollution, a new lead dioxide support for the determination of sulfur dioxide has been devised. The preparation of candies according to the standard method requires much time and skill from the operator, whereas the technique that is proposed is rapid, easy, and provides plates of a high degree of uniformity. A technician with little experience can coat a great number of plates per day with no difficulty. N. A. Huey working at the National Center for Air Pollution Control in Cincinnati published in the September 1968 issue of this Journal a new technique which consists of coating the inside of a plastic Petri dish with a PbO² paste. His method also has the above mentioned advantages. The plates that are suggested allow a simplification of the preliminary work for several types of analyses such as gra-vimetry,¹ colorimetry,³ turbidimetry,^4,5 titrimetry,⁶ and nephelemetry.⁸     

Automotive Exhaust Emission Levels by Geographic Area and Vehicle Make A Nationwide Survey

Gross average automotive exhaust emissions data collected by the Atlantic Richfield Clean Air Caravan during the summer of 1970 showed only slight geographical variations when the specific makes were ignored. When considering specific makes, significant differences were found on an average emissions basis. Vehicle population—emission distributions showed wide variations in the 50% population levels and in the percent of vehicles with emissions greater than specified values. Hydrocarbon (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO) data are given on a gross basis for the 1970, 1968-69, 1966-67, and pre-1966 model year group vehicles. Average HC and CO emissions and vehicle population-Idle emissions distribution curves are included for specific make vehicles in selected areas.     

Turbulent Plume in a Turbulent Cross Flow: Comparison of Wind Tunnel Tests with Field Observations

Plume rise downwind of a large stationary gas turbine was measured in the field and the conditions were then scaled in the laboratory. For the laboratory, the plume exit conditions, wind velocity and temperature profiles, and wind direction were matched. It was found that for high temperature exhaust, the buoyancy is best matched by calculating a dimensionless density difference. With properly calculated buoyancy length scales, the plume trajectories were compared and were found to agree quite well. The probability distributions of the entrainment constant and the average values of the entrapment constant with downwind distance were compared. The field data showed about 15% greater plume rise. The median entrainment constant was about 10% greater for the lab test and the shape of the probability distribution matched very closely.     

Cyclic Trends in Los Angeles Fine Participates

Noontime visibilities in downtown Los Angeles, averaged over the smog season of June through November, show two cycles of general deterioration and improvement. The improvement since 1962 is confirmed by available high volume filter data and conditions in 1974/75 are at least as good as at anytime since observations were begun in 1933. The decrease in frequency of “rule 57” days suggests that the improvement of the last decade and perhaps the cyclic variation of the past 40 years has been primarily of meteorological origin.     

Testing and Commercialization of Byproduct Dibasic cids as Buffer Additives for Limestone Flue Gas esulfurization Systems

Pilot plant (0.1 MW) tests and utility boiler full scale demonstration (194 MW) of byproduct organic dibasic acids (DBA) as buffer additives to limestone scrubbers have shown performance improvements equivalent to those achieved by the addition of pure adipic acid. Both SO₂ removal efficiency and limestone utilization increased, and no significant operating problems were observed with three of the four DBA tested. Chemical and biological evaluations of scrubber samples taken during the DBA testing indicated no detectable tOxicity or mutagenicity, and no significant environmental impact is expected as a result of DBA addition. Economic estimates indicate that substitution of DBA for pure adipic acid as a buffer additive will result in additive cost savings of 30 % or greater.
