Towards institutional analysis of sustainability science: a quantitative examination of the patterns of research collaboration 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
This paper examines quantitatively the patterns of collaboration over geographical boundaries in the emerging field of sustainability
science by empirically analyzing the bibliometric data of scientific articles. The results indicate that an increasing number
of countries are engaged in research on sustainability, with the proportion of articles published through international collaboration
rising as well. The number of countries engaged in international collaboration on sustainability research has been increasing,
and the diversity of countries engaged in research collaboration beyond national borders is also increasing. The geographical
patterns of collaboration on sustainability show that research collaboration tends to be conducted between countries which
are geographically located closely, suggesting that communication and information exchange might be limited within the regional
clusters. The focused fields of research activities on sustainability are significantly different between countries, as each
country has its focused fields of research related to sustainability. The specialization of research activities is also observed
in international collaboration. While these patterns of international collaboration within regional clusters focusing on specific
fields could be effective in promoting the creation, transmission, and sharing of knowledge on sustainability utilizing the
already existing regional networks, they could pose a serious obstacle to collecting, exchanging, and integrating diverse
types of knowledge, especially when it is necessary to deal with problems involving large-scale complex interactions with
long-term implications, such as climate change. It would be of critical importance to establish inter-regional linkages by
devising appropriate institutional arrangements for global research collaboration on sustainability science. 相似文献

Sex-biased predation is thought to have important implications for sexual selection, sex allocation, and population dynamics (Magnhagen, 1991; Le-Galliard et al., 2005 for an example in lizards). Most studies found that males are subjected to higher predation pressure than females during the reproductive season (Korpimäki, 1985; Lodé et al., 2004; Christe et al., 2006; Costantini et al., 2007). In that period, males are very mobile, emit acoustic signals and exhibit brilliant colourations, which are needed to attract females but may make them more visible to predators. With regard to lizards, a recent study provided the first evidence that males of a lizard species may be preyed on more than females (Costantini et al., 2007). In the present study, we investigated whether there is sex-biased predation on two small lacertid species, the common wall lizard Podarcis muralis (Laurenti, 1768) and the Italian wall lizard Podarcis sicula (Rafinesque-Schmaltz, 1810), by Eurasian kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) during the reproductive season. As plants constitute the foundation of the food chain, concerns have been raised about the possibility of toxic concentrations of metals and metalloids being transported from plants to the higher food chain strata. In this perspective, the use of important phytotoxicity endpoints may be of utmost significance in assessing the hazardous nature of metals and metalloids and also in developing ecological soil screening levels. The current study aimed to investigate the role of glutathione (GSH) and its associated enzymes in the metabolic adaptation of two grass species namely Eriophorum angustifolium Honck. and Lolium perenne L. to metals and metalloids stress in the vicinity of a chemical industrial complex (Estarreja, Portugal). Soil and plant samples were collected from contaminated (C) and non-contaminated (reference, R) sites, respectively, near and away from the Estarreja Chemical Complex, Portugal. Soils (from 0 to 10 and 10 to 20 cm depths) were analyzed for pH, organic carbon, and metals and metalloids concentrations. Plant samples were processed fresh for physiological and biochemical estimations, while oven-dried plant samples were used for metals and metalloids determinations following standard methodologies. Both soils and plants from the industrial area exhibited differential concentrations of major metals and metalloids including As, Cu, Hg, Pb, and Zn. In particular, L. perenne shoot displayed significantly higher and lower concentrations of Pb and As, respectively at contaminated site (vs. E. angustifolium). Irrespective of sites, L. perenne shoot exhibited significantly higher total GSH pool, oxidized glutathione (GSSG) and oxidized protein (vs. E. angustifolium). Additionally, severe damages to photosynthetic pigments, proteins, cellular membrane integrity (in terms of electrolyte leakage), and lipid peroxidation were also perceptible in L. perenne shoot. Contrarily, irrespective of the sites, activities of catalase and GSH-regenerating enzyme, GSH reductase, and GSH-metabolizing enzymes such as GSH peroxidase and GSH sulfotransferase were significantly higher in shoot of E. angustifolium. Despite the higher total GSH content, L. perenne is vulnerable to multi-metals-induced stress in comparison to E. angustifolium as depicted by increased GSH- and protein oxidation, low reactive oxygen radical-processing potential (exhibited in terms of low catalase activity) and poor GSH pool utilization efficiency (in terms of lower GSH-associated enzymes activities). The outcome of the present study may be significant for understanding vital GSH-mediated metals and metalloids tolerance mechanisms in plants as well as their unsuitability for animal consumption due to higher metals and metalloids burdens. 相似文献

Efficient and sustainable management of rapidly mounting environmental issues has been the focus of current intensive research. The present study aimed to investigate the impact of plant phenological development stage variation on mercury (Hg) tolerance, accumulation, and allocation in two salt marsh macrophytes Triglochin maritima and Scirpus maritimus prevalent in historically Hg-contaminated Ria de Aveiro coastal lagoon (Portugal). Both plant samples and the sediments vegetated by monospecific stands of T. maritima and S. maritimus were collected from reference (R) and sites with moderate (M) and high (H) Hg contamination in Laranjo bay within Ria de Aveiro lagoon. Hg tolerance, uptake, and allocation in T. maritima and S. maritimus, physico-chemical traits (pH, redox potential, and organic matter content) and Hg concentrations in sediments vegetated by these species were impacted differentially by phenological development stages variation irrespective of the Hg contamination level. In T. maritima, Hg concentration increased with increase in Hg contamination gradient where root displayed significantly higher Hg followed by rhizome and leaf maximally at H. However, in S. maritimus, the highest Hg concentration was perceptible in rhizome followed by root maximally at M. Between the two studied plant species, S. maritimus displayed higher Hg tolerance index (depicted by higher plant dry mass allocated to reproductive stage) and higher available Hg at M (during all growth stages) and H (during senescent stage) when compared to T. maritimus. Both plant species proved to be Hg excluder (low root/rhizome–leaf Hg translocation). Additionally, T. maritima also acted as Hg stabilizer while, S. maritimus as Hg accumulator. It can be inferred from the study that (a) the plant phenological development stage variations significantly influenced plant Hg sensitivity by impacting sediment chemistry, plant growth (in terms of plant dry mass), Hg accumulation, and its subsequent allocation capacity, contingent to Hg contamination gradient; (b) S. maritimus accumulated higher Hg but restricted its translocation to above-ground part using exclusion process at both M and H due to its accelerated growth during Hg-tolerant reproductive/metabolically active phenological development stage greater than its counterpart T. maritima; and (c) the studied salt marsh plants although hailed from the same C3 and monocot group did not necessarily display similar phenotypic plasticity and behavior towards Hg-contaminated scenario during their life cycle. 相似文献

Because ecosystem services are generally not produced and used in the same place, their assessment should consider the flows
of services from ecosystems to users. These flows depend on the characteristics and spatial distribution of ecosystems and
users, the spatial relationships between them, and the presence of filters or barriers between ecosystems and users. The objective
of this paper is to map the ecosystem services provided to the Costa Rican and Nicaraguan hydroelectric sectors, which are
crucial sectors for national sustainable development and depend directly on hydrological ecosystem services. The paper presents
an approach for modelling the flows of multiple services from diverse ecosystems to diverse users through different kinds
of filters in a landscape. The approach uses expert knowledge and fuzzy numbers to handle uncertainties. The analyses for
Costa Rica and Nicaragua show how the approach helps identify priority areas for the conservation and restoration of forests
for the services they provide to the hydroelectric sector. As such, it is a useful tool for defining spatially targeted policies
for the conservation of ecosystem services and for involving the users of ecosystem services in ecosystem management. 相似文献

Climate change and human disturbance drive catchment erosion and increase riverine sediment load sensitively in small and
medium-sized watersheds. This is not always true in large basins, where aggregation and buffering effects have dampen the
ability to determine the driving forces of sedimentation. Even though there are significant responses to sedimentation in
large river basins, it is difficult to get a precise quantitative assessment of specific drivers. This paper develops a methodology
to identify driving forces that change suspended sediment load in the Upper Yangtze river. Annual runoff and sediment load
data from 1954 to 2005 at the Yichang gauging station in the Upper Yangtze basin, daily precipitation data from 60 meteorological
stations, and survey data on reservoir sediment were collected for the study. Sediment load/rainfall erosivity (S/R), is a
new proxy indicator introduced to reflect human activities. Since the mid-1980s, S/R in the Upper Yangtze has dramatically
declined from 0.21 to 0.03 (×1010 t ha h MJ−1 mm−1), indicating that human activity has played a key role in the decline of the suspended sediment load. Before the mid-1980s,
a higher average S/R is attributed to large-scale deforestation and land reclamation. A significant sediment decrease occurred
from 1959 to 1961 during an extreme drought condition, and an increase in sedimentation in 1998 coincided with an extreme
flood event, which was well recorded in the S/R curve. This indicates that the S/R proxy is able to distinguish anthropogenic
from climate impacts on suspended sediment load, but is not necessarily indicatory in extreme climate events. In addition,
typical drivers of riverine sediment load variation including soil conservation projects, reservoirs construction, and land

Observing the many and varied reactions to the Kyoto Protocol, it becomes clear that different governments find themselves
in different contexts that eventually direct them toward taking dissimilar positions on energy issues. This paper, through
five integrated studies, investigates whether contextualizing energy issues is (are) relevant to support energy policy formulation
and evaluation and provides insights into how to operationalize the contextualization. Instead of considering the most widely
accepted tools currently used to assess and evaluate energy policy, this research proposes the utilization of a holistic framework
that incorporates social, economic and environmental factors as well as their relations to the energy sector to better contextualize
global, regional and national energy issues. This framework, which accounts for feedback loops, delays and non-linearity,
is applied to case studies to investigate the longer-term performance of selected energy policies. Results of the study indicate
the likely emergence of various unexpected side effects and elements of policy resistance over the medium and longer term
due to the interrelations existing between energy and society, economy and environment. Furthermore, while side effects and
unintended consequences may arise both within the energy sector and in the other sectors, they simultaneously influence society,

Supply of international environmental public goods must meet certain conditions to be socially efficient, and several reasons
explain why they are currently undersupplied. Diagnosis of the public goods failure associated with particular ecosystem services
is critical to the development of the appropriate international response. There are two categories of international environmental
public goods that are most likely to be undersupplied. One has an additive supply technology and the other has a weakest link
supply technology. The degree to which the collective response should be targeted depends on the importance of supply from
any one country. In principle, the solution for the undersupply lies in payments designed to compensate local providers for
the additional costs they incur in meeting global demand. Targeted support may take the form of direct investment in supply
(the Global Environment Facility model) or of payments for the benefits of supply (the Payments for Ecosystem Services model). 相似文献

This study projected responses of forest net primary productivity (NPP) to three climate change scenarios at a resolution
of 5 km × 5 km across the state of Louisiana, USA. In addition, we assessed uncertainties associated with the NPP projection
at the grid and state levels. Climate data of the scenarios were derived from Community Climate System Model outputs. Changes
in annual NPP between 2000 and 2050 were projected with the forest ecosystem model PnET-II. Results showed that forest productivity
would increase under climate change scenarios A1B and A2, but with scenario B1, it would peak during 2011–2020 and then decline.
The projected average NPP under B1 over the years from 2000 to 2050 was significantly different from those under A1B and A2.
Forest NPP appeared to be primarily a function of temperature, not precipitation. Uncertainties of the NPP projection were
due to large spatial resolution of the climate variables. Overall, this study suggested that in order to project effects of
climate change on forest ecosystem at regional level, modeling uncertainties could be reduced by increasing the spatial resolution

The aim was to describe spatiotemporal patterns of colonization of spruce branches by algae and lichens and the relationship
with decreasing deposition of N and S. Coverage was estimated annually over 10 years for four Swedish Integrated Monitoring
catchments with varying deposition levels. Initial hypotheses were that algal coverage would be positively correlated with
deposition and that lichen coverage would be negatively correlated with S and positively with N deposition. Data were analyzed
using regression, ANOVA, and partial least square regression. The results showed a temporal decrease in the coverage of algae
but an increase in colonization rates, while lichens showed less uniform patterns. Within catchments, algae and lichen coverages
were positively correlated with mainly S deposition. Across catchments, coverage of algae increased, while the coverage of
lichens decreased with increasing N and S deposition. Colonization rates of both algae and lichens showed weak correlations
with both spatial and temporal trends in N and S deposition. Thus, while N and S deposition had an effect on the colonization
and coverage of algae and lichens, other factors are also important. 相似文献
