The removal of toxic metals from wastewaters by biosorption, based on the metal-binding capacities of various biological materials,
has received much interest. However, the success of this approach depends on economic feasibility, which can be obtained by
optimization of the environmental conditions. This paper evaluates, for the first time, the use of low-cost biosorbent (date
stones (DS) and palm-tree waste (PTW)) to eliminate Cu(II) from aqueous solutions. The effect of some parameters on copper
biosorption has been studied using date stones and palm-tree waste as solid sorbents. Results show that the highest percentage
of copper adsorption was obtained for the smallest size of the sorbent particles. The biosorption process was found to occur
rapidly, i.e. the maximum sorption capacity was reached within 20 min. The process involved pseudo-second-order kinetics with
an activation energy value within the normal range considered for processes, where a physical interaction between the sorbate
and the sorbent solid predominated. The thermodynamic parameters of the copper ions uptake onto the solid sorbents indicated
that, the process was endothermic and proceeds spontaneously from the date stones. However, the thermodynamic studies of the
adsorption of copper on palm-tree waste indicated that the process was exothermic and proceeds spontaneously. 相似文献

An major research area in environmental chemistry is the development of methods for the analysis of biomarkers. Metallothioneins
are used as biomarkers in studies of heavy metals exposure in water, because metallothioneins are synthesized and accumulated
when organisms are exposed to toxic concentrations of pollutants. In this work, simple and sensitive voltammetric methods
were developed for metallothionein and copper (II) determinations in fish liver Lepomis gibbosus. Both analytical methodologies were optimized and applied to samples extracted from individuals previously submitted to sub-lethal
toxicological trials with copper sulphate (CuSO4) and cadmium chloride (CdCl2). The obtained results showed that both methods are very precise, sensitive, and involve simple sample preparation processes.
Moreover, metallothioneins showed better correlation with the toxic exposure than Cu2+. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that hepatic metallothioneins and Cu2+ contents are voltammetrically determined in order to be compared in their function as heavy metal biological indicators. 相似文献

A new method for the determination of submicromolar and nanomolar concentrations of herbicide Bifenox using differential pulse voltammetry at a mercury meniscus modified silver solid amalgam electrode is described. This new type of working electrode is non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and compatible with principles of green analytical chemistry, and its surface can be easily electrochemically renewed in the case of passivation. The newly developed direct differential pulse voltammetric determination of Bifenox gives limit of determination 6.7·10?7 and 6.9·10?7?M in drinking and river water, respectively. Both the selectivity and the sensitivity can be further increased by preliminary separation and preconcentration using solid phase extraction. This combination enables to reach limit of determination 0.9?×?10?9 and 1.5?×?10?9?M for drinking and river water, respectively. Because of lower running and investment costs, this electroanalytical method can be used for large scale monitoring of possible water contamination with tested herbicide. 相似文献

The levels of a wide variety of pharmaceuticals and hormones, in source and potable-water supplies of French drinking water
treatment plants, were assessed. In surface waters, 27 of the 51 target compounds were determined at least once. Paracetamol,
salicylic acid and carbamazepine were quantified in more than 80% of samples. The highest concentration of 71 ng/L was observed
for paracetamol. Twelve other substances were widely found in the surface waters studied, contaminating between 33 and 80%
of the samples. These compounds include analgesics, psychotropic drugs, antibiotics and beta-blockers consistent with the
French consumption, as well as natural hormones (oestrone, progesterone and androgens) and synthetic progestatives. In drinking
water supplies, 25 compounds were also present, salicylic acid being the most frequently detected. Carbamazepine and the β-blocker
atenolol found at lower levels (maximum 2 ng/L), are also present in more than 30% of the contaminated drinking waters. The
pharmaceuticals exhibit different reactivity towards the treatments, while progestagens and androgens seem resistant to most
of them. The effectiveness of the treatments is discussed, as well as the consequences of the presence of all these compounds
on human health. This is the first time that such a long list of compounds (51) is proposed to assessment, and consequently
this study provides the first data on pharmaceuticals and steroids occurrences in French drinking waters and represents a
basis for the assessment of risks for humans. Moreover, at the international level, this is the first time that so many substances

The present study investigated the influence of 241Am on microbial growth and the degradation of organic waste. Leachate samples collected in a lysimeter were periodically analyzed
for bacterial growth, under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. 241Am inhibited bacterial growth, and the degradation of organic matter was delayed in comparison with the control. Minimal inhibitory
concentration assays and survival curves revealed that it inhibits the growth of Pseudomonas putida F1. The assay also revealed that 241Am is more toxic than 238U, Zn2+ and Cd2+. This study further led to the finding of four new radionuclide-tolerant bacterial strains: Flavobacterium spp., Pseudomonas gladioli, Chryseobacterium indologenes and Ochrobactrum anthropi. The survival curves of P. gladioli, C. indologenes revealed that these bacteria are resistant to metal as consortia. 相似文献

The increasing order of the mean concentrations of Cd, Cu, and Zn in the tissues of Mugil cephalus of seven coastal lagoons of Sinaloa State (NW Mexico) was liver > gills > muscle, while for Pb it was gills > muscle ≥ liver. There were no differences between the mean concentrations of Cd and Pb of the three tissues determined in the samples of the seven lagoons and, although there were some significant differences, there was no indication of a latitude-related trend in the distribution of Cu and Zn: the Cu content of the muscle tended to be higher in the northern than in the southern lagoons, although in the case of the gills the highest and lowest mean values indicated an opposite trend, with the highest and lowest values in one southern and one northern lagoon. In the case of the liver, there were no differences and no indication of a regional trend. There were no differences in the mean Zn contents of muscle and gills; in the case of the liver, one of the lagoons of the central part of the state had a significantly higher value than one of the southern lagoons and all the rest had similar values. In addition, there was no clear indication of season-related differences in any of the three tissues. According to our results, the metal contents of the muscle of this species are not of concern for human health, since the allowable ingestion would be in the order of 0.9 kg/day. 相似文献

Urban and agricultural areas affect the hydraulic patterns as well as the water quality of receiving drainage systems, especially of catchments smaller than 50 km(2). Urban runoff is prone to contamination due to pollutants like pesticides or pharmaceuticals. Agricultural areas are possible sources of nutrient and herbicide contamination for receiving water bodies. The pollution is derived from leaching by subsurface flow, as well as wash-off and erosion caused by surface runoff. In the Luxembourgish Mess River catchment, the pharmaceutical and pesticide concentrations are comparable with those detected by other authors in different river systems worldwide. Some investigated pesticide concentrations infringe current regulations. The maximum allowable concentration for diuron of 1.8 μg l(?-?1) is exceeded fourfold by measured 7.41 μg l(?-?1) in a flood event. The load of dissolved pesticides reaching the stream gauge is primarily determined by the amount applied to the surfaces within the catchment area. Storm water runoff from urban areas causes short-lived but high-pollutant concentrations and moderate loads, whereas moderate concentrations and high loads are representative for agricultural inputs to the drainage system. Dissolved herbicides, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, analgesics and hormones can be used as indicators to investigate runoff generation processes, including inputs from anthropogenic sources. The measurements prove that the influence of kinematic wave effects on the relationship between hydrograph and chemographs should not be neglected in smaller basins. The time lag shows that it is not possible to connect analysed substances of defined samples to the corresponding section of the hydrograph. 相似文献

This study was aimed at assessing the levels of 210Pb and 210Po concentrations as well as gross alpha and beta activities in environmental monitors from the Catalan stretch of the Ebro River (Spain), potentially influenced by the presence of sediments with high concentrations of 238U and its decay chain daughters in the Flix reservoir. The chronic daily intake of 210Pb and 210Po through ingestion and inhalation of soils was evaluated, and the derived non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were characterized. The low concentration of radioisotopes in soils resulted in a negligible annual effective dose. The levels of 210Pb and 210Po were determined in various groups of highly consumed food (fish and seafood, vegetables, fruits, and rice), and their dietary intake was calculated. The annual effective dose for the adult people from food intake was estimated in 3.3 × 10???2 mSv, mostly due to 210Po. Overall, the current radioactivity levels in the Catalan stretch of the Ebro River should not mean any additional health risk for the population living nearby. However, an integral assessment of the risks derived from exposure to other pollutants (e.g., metals and organochlorine compounds) jointly with radionuclides could be of great interest. 相似文献
