Heavy metals in soils may adversely affect environmental quality. In this study, we investigated the release of Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cu from four contaminated soils by column leaching and single and sequential batch extractions. Homogeneously packed soil columns were leached with 67 mL/g 10(-2) M CaCl2 to investigate the exchangeable metal pool and subsequently with 1400 mL/g 10(-2) M CaCl2 adjusted to pH 3 to study the potential of metal release in response to soil acidification. In two noncalcareous soils (pH 5.7 and 5.1), exchange by Ca resulted in pronounced release peaks for Zn and Cd that were coupled to the exchange of Mg by Ca, and 40 to 70% of total Zn and Cd contents were rapidly mobilized. These amounts compared well with exchangeable pools determined in single and sequential batch extractions. In two soils with near-neutral pH, the effluent concentrations of Zn and Cd were several orders of magnitude lower and no pronounced elution peaks were observed. This behavior was also observed for Cu and Pb in all four soils. When the soils were leached at pH 3, the column effluent patterns reflected the coupling of CaCO3 dissolution (if present) and other proton buffering reactions, proton-induced metal release, and metal-specific readsorption within the soil column. Varying the flow rate by a factor of five had only minor effects on the release patterns. Overall, Ca exchange and subsequent acidification to pH 3 removed between 65 and 90% of total Zn, Cd, Pb, and Cu from the four contaminated soils.  相似文献

During the JCO-accident in Tokai-mura in 1999, the surrounding village was irradiated by an uncontrolled neutron flux. At some locations in that village, the thermal neutron flux was determined retrospectively by measurement of the very low activity of 51Cr and 60Co in stainless-steel spoons using gamma-ray spectrometry in underground laboratories. Activities determined in the HADES underground facility are presented here, together with calibrations performed using a well-defined thermal neutron flux to directly estimate the fluence of thermal neutrons independent of most assumptions. The results show measurable 51Cr in three samples and 60Co in four samples taken from locations at distances of up to 430m from the accident location despite the elapse of 4 half-lives of 51Cr before measurement. Effects of air transport of the samples were considered and shown to be negligible.  相似文献

The main objectives of this study were to estimate the dietary intake of dioxins by the population of Catalonia, Spain, to determine which food groups showed the greatest contribution to this intake, and to assess the health risks potentially associated with the dietary dioxin intake. From June to August 2000, food samples were randomly acquired in seven cities of Catalonia. Dioxin concentrations were determined in 108 samples belonging to the following groups: vegetables, fruits, pulses, cereals, fish and shellfish, meats and meat products, eggs, milk and dairy products, and oils and fats. Estimates of average daily food consumption were obtained from recent studies. Total dietary intake of dioxins for the general population of Catalonia was estimated to be 95.4 pg WHO-TEQ/day (78.4 pg I-TEQ/day), with fish and shellfish (31%), diary products (25%), cereals (14%) and meat (13%) showing the greatest percentages of contribution to dioxin intake. The contribution of all the rest of food groups to the total dietary intake was under 20%. The non-carcinogenic risk index of dioxin intake through the diet was in the range 0.34-1.36, while the carcinogenic risk level was 1,360 excess cancer over a lifetime of 70 years. Our results corroborate the decreasing tendency in dietary intake of dioxins found in recent studies (2000-2001) from various countries.  相似文献

To facilitate the distinction among different engine types, this paper indicates first a general classification of gasoline engines. This classification contains the group of stratified charge engines, and shows that, within this group, the divided combustion chamber engine type constitutes a major subdivision. Three characteristic designs of this type of engine are described in some detail, and fuel economy and emission results are presented. Data obtained with one of these engines indicate excellent fuel consumptions, showing at light loads values close to those achieved by Diesel engines. Data also show that automobiles equipped with another of the engines described in the paper have passed, with ample margin, the 1975 Federal Emission Standards, without added devices for exhaust gas treatment, while maintaining satisfactory fuel economy. Some aims that should be pursued in order to achieve, simultaneously, both the optimal fuel economy and emission reduction potential of the stratified engine are outlined. It is concluded that substantial improvements should yet be expected if the proven advantages of the divided combustion chamber engine are recognized and sufficient efforts are applied for further development.  相似文献

Sulfide-bearing mine tailings are a serious environmental problem around the world. In this study, the vertical distribution and speciation of Zn and Pb in the fine-grained flotation residues of a former sulfide ore mine in Germany were investigated to assess the inorganic weathering processes that effect the environmental risk arising from this site. Total metal contents were determined by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF). Mobilizable fractions of Zn, Pb, Fe, and Mn were quantified by sequential chemical extractions (SCE). Furthermore, the speciation of Zn was analyzed by Zn K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) to identify the residual Zn species. The variations in pH and inorganic C content show an acidification of the topsoil to pH 5.5. EXAFS results confirm that Zn is mainly bound in sphalerite in the subsoil and weathering reactions lead to a redistribution of Zn in the topsoil. A loss of 35% Zn and S from the topsoil compared with the parent material with 10 g kg-1 Zn and neutral pH has been observed. If acidification proceeds it will lead to a significant release of Zn, S, and Pb to the ground water. In contrast to Zn, Pb is enriched in the mobile fraction of the topsoil by more than a factor of two compared with the subsoil which contains a total of 2 g kg-1 Pb. Thus, the high bioavailability of Pb and the potential for Pb uptake by plants and animals currently represent the most severe threat for environmental health.  相似文献

The effects of six clarification agents [egg albumin, blood albumin, bentonite + gelatine, charcoal, polyvinylpolypyrrolidine (PVPP) and silica gel] on the removal of residues of three fungicides (famoxadone, fluquinconazole and trifloxystrobin) applied directly to a racked red wine, elaborated from Monastrell variety grapes from the D.O. Region of Jumilla (Murcia, Spain) were studied. The clarified wines were filtered with 0.45 μ m nylon filters to determine the influence of this winemaking process in the disappearance of fungicide residues. Analytical determination of fluquinconazole and trifloxystrobin was performed by gas chromatography with electron captor detector (ECD), while that of famoxadone using an HPLC equipped with a diode array detector (DAD). Generally, trifloxystrobin is the fungicide that is the lowest persistent one in wines, except in the egg albumin study whereas, the most persistent one is fluquinconazole. The elimination depends on the nature of the active ingredient, though the water stability in the presence of light within it has more influence than the solubility and polarity of the product itself. The most effective clarifying agents were the charcoal and PVPP. The silica gel and bentonite plus gelatine were not enough to reduce considerably the residual contents in the wine clarified with them. In general terms, filtration is not an effective step in the elimination of wine residues. The greatest removal after filtration is obtained in wines clarified with egg albumine and bentonite plus gelatine, and the lowest in those clarified with PVPP.  相似文献
