Heavy metals disposed through anthropogenic activities find their way into the oceans and seas through the rivers or through direct fall out from factory effluents. These heavy metals resuspend back into the water column along with the sediments and are known to affect the marine animals. Marine animals like fish, prawn, crab and mussel were collected along the East Coast (off Pulicat lake to Chennai Harbour) to evaluate trace metal concentrations in various tissues. The above specimens accumulated heavy metals such as Zn, Pb, Cu, Co, Cr, Ni and Cd. Fish, prawn, crab and mussel revealed higher concentration of heavy metals such as Zn, Pb, Cr Co, Cu and Ni and Cd in low levels. The results revealed that the heavy metal concentrations in the marine animals are below the threshold levels associated with the toxicological effects and the regulatory limits. The bioconcentration factors revealed that the animals have accumulated heavy metals along the food chain rather than from the water column and sediment. 相似文献

The cytogenotoxicity and histopathological alterations induced by xenobiotics in Lekki Lagoon and Ogun River on Synodontis clarias were investigated. Fish from these water bodies and a fish farm (control) were examined for micronucleated, binucleated, and immature erythrocytes in both gill and peripheral blood. Also gill, liver, kidney, and ovary were processed for histopathology using hematoxylin-eosin staining. Concentrations of cadmium, zinc, lead and copper in the water were determined. There was significant (p < 0.05) increase in micronucleated, binucleated, and immature erythrocytes in both gill and peripheral blood of S. clarias from the lagoon and river compared to the reference site. Loss and disorganization of the primary and secondary lamellae, multifocal degeneration, hemorrhages, cellular infiltration, congestions, vacuolations, atresia, and necrosis were common lesions in the examined tissues of fish from the lagoon and river. Cd, Zn, Pb, and Cu in water samples from the lagoon and river were higher than the reference site. Xenobiotics in Lekki Lagoon and Ogun River, mostly metals, induced deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and pathological damage in S. clarias. 相似文献

Divergence of sexual signals in sympatry can arise as a consequence of (1) interspecific competition for resources, (2) selection against maladaptive hybridization, or (3) as a result of selection to reduce the cost of interspecific aggression; termed agonistic character displacement (ACD). Calopterygid damselflies have emerged as a model system for studying the evolution of divergent sexual signals due to the repeated evolution of sympatric species pairs with fully and partially melanized wings. Damselfly wing patterns function during both courtship and territory defense. However, the relative contributions of natural and sexual selection to phenotypic divergence and enhanced isolation in sympatry remain unclear in many cases. Here, we investigated the hypothesis that interference competition, in the form of increased interspecific male–male aggression, drives the evolution of character displacement in sympatry between two species of North American damselflies, Calopteryx aequabilis and Calopteryx maculata, that show no evidence of ecological divergence or ongoing hybridization. In paired behavioral trials, we found that interspecific male aggression related to territory defense varied between site, species, and as a function of the relative abundance of con- vs. hetero-specific males. Specifically, we found that large-spotted C. aequabilis males received increased intra- and interspecific aggression but that aggression against large-spotted males declined during the middle of the flight season when both species were equally abundant. Based on these results, we suggest that ACD leads to enhanced species recognition, and may be a common outcome of the antagonism between interspecific male–male competition and the countervailing force of intraspecific sexual selection favoring increased wing melanization among territorial damselfly species. 相似文献

Atlantic silversides, Menidia menidia, were collected by seine-net from the Newport River estuary, North Carolina, USA and maintained in the laboratory. Direct measurement showed that the amount of mucus sloughed off individual silversides was 567 g h-1 at a swimming speed of 50 cm s-1. Individual M. menidia were also allowed to swim in a flowtank filled with 0, 1, and 10 ppm of the synthetic drag-reducer Polyox to determine if any changes in tailbeat frequency or amplitude could be correlated with the level of this sloughed material. Tailbeat measurements between seawater controls and either Polyox concentration did not differ significantly. Calculations based on this evidence indicate that the amount of solubilized mucus sloughed off a school of 10 000 M. menidia would be at least two orders of magnitude less than the highest concentration of Polyox tested. We conclude that solubilized mucus in the water column does not confer drag-reduction to schooling M. menidia. 相似文献

When hunting for fish Noctilio leporinus uses several strategies. In high search flight it flies within 20–50 cm of the water surface and emits groups of two to four echolocation signals, always containing at least one pure constant frequency (CF) pulse and one mixed CF-FM pulse consisting of a CF component which is followed by a frequency-modulated (FM) component. The pure CF signals are the longest, with an average duration of 13.3 ms and a maximum of 17 ms. The CF component of the CF-FM signals averages 8.9 ms, the FM sweeps 3.9 ms. The CF components have frequencies of 52.8–56.2 kHz and the FM components have an average bandwidth of 25.9 kHz. A bat in high search flight reacts to jumping fish with pointed dips at the spot where a fish has broken the surface. As it descends to the water surface the bat shows the typical approach pattern of all bats with decreasing pulse duration and pulse interval. A jumping fish reveals itself by a typical pattern of temporary echo glints, reflected back to the bat from its body and from the water disturbance. In low search flight N. leporinus drops to a height of only 4–10 cm, with body parallel to the water, legs extended straight back and turned slightly downward, and feet cocked somewhat above the line of the legs and poised within 2–4 cm of the water surface. In this situation N. leporinus emits long series of short CF-FM pulses with an average duration of 5.6 ms (CF 3.1 and FM 2.6) and an average pulse interval of 20 ms, indicating that it is looking for targets within a short range. N. leporinus also makes pointed dips during low search flight by rapidly snapping the feet into the water at the spot where it has localized a jumping fish or disturbance. In the random rake mode, N. leporinus drops to the water surface, lowers its feet and drags its claws through the water in relatively straight lines for up to 10m. The echolocation behavior is similar to that of high search flight. This indicates that in this hunting mode N. leporinus is not pursuing specific targets, and that raking is a random or statistical search for surface fishes. When raking, the bat uses two strategies. In directed random rake it rakes through patches of water where fish jumping activity is high. Our interpretation is that the bat detects this activity by echolocation but prefers not to concentrate on a single jumping fish. In the absence of jumping fish, after flying for several minutes without any dips, N. leporinus starts to make very long rakes in areas where it has hunted successfully before (memory-directed random rake). The induction of reproductive activity by blue light in female gametophytes of the brown alga Lamnaria saccharina has been investigated and related to other effects of red and blue light on these plants. Although germination of zoo-spores is slightly delayed in red light, female gametophytes grow at similar rates in blue and red light of the same quantum irradiance up to an age of 8 to 10 days, when plants in blue light begin to form eggs. The percentage of plants forming eggs is proportional to the total quanta of blue wavelengths received up to a saturating value of about 400 μE·cm-2; a 50% response is induced by 200 μE·cm-2. The action spectrum for the induction of fertility has a main peak at 430 to 450 nm, with two subsidiary peaks in the blue and one in the near-ultraviolet light, but the action spectrum for photosynthesis is quite different, with peaks in the red, green and blue regions. These results indicate that egg formation in female gametophytes occurs as a specific morphogenetic response to blue light, which is independent of photosynthesis and growth, and trial experiments with male gametophytes of L. saccharina and gametophytes of other species of Laminariales indicate that these plants react similarly. 相似文献

A small 2, 271-1 (600-gallon) prototype recirculating marine water system was designed and evaluated (26 months). The system employed a quaternary (mechanical, algal, bacterial and chemical) series of processing units with the aim of achieving long-term seawater quality and constancy without water replacement. Total ammonia (0.05±0.005 ppm), un-ionized ammonia (0.0036±0.0003 ppm), nitrite (0.10±0.014 ppm), nitrate (24.6±2.0 ppm), phosphate (14.0±2.1 ppm), dissolved oxygen (6.5–7.2 mg/l) and pH (7.80 to 8.25) were maintained at acceptable levels for the entire period. The biomass load (1.82 kg/397 l) consisted of 4 nurse sharks which were fed ad-lib twice a week. Further, low levels of total bacteria (1.5×102 bacteria/ml) and coliforms [most probable number (MPN) index 17/dl] were present in the seawater. InEmerita asiatica, the quantitative fluctuations in the glycogen content of the hepatopancreas were markedly related to the moult cycle. The glycogen content of the hepatopancreas was maximum during premoult stages. It has been suggested that reserve glycogen, in addition to meeting general metabolic needs, may be especially involved in the genesis of the sugar precursors of chitin. The marked fall in the hepatopancreas glycogen values following moulting is probably due to its utilization in chitin synthesis during and immediately following moulting. InE. asiatica, the storage of glycogen was found to be meagre in muscles, and muscle glycogen had no bearing on chitin synthesis during moulting. InLigia exotica, glycogen is stored to a lesser extent than inE. asiatica, and was found in connective tissue and muscles. Significant fluctuations were noted in glycogen values correlated with the phases in the moult cycle when chitin synthesis took place. InL. exotica, the hepatopancreas does not serve as a storage depot for glycogen related to chitin synthesis. 相似文献

An intertidal and underwater survey of the zonation of seaweed in St. Margaret's Bay, NovaScotia, Canada showed 8 major zones as one proceeded away from shore: (1) Fucus and Ascophyllum; (2) Chorda with filamentous browns; (3) Chondrus crispus; (4) Zostera marina; (5) Laminaria digitata with L. longicrusis; (6) Laminaria longicruris; (7) L. longicruris with Agarum cribrosum; (8) Agarum cribrosum with Ptilota serrata. Zostera occurred at the same level as O. crispus but replaced it in sheltered water. Ascophyllum was more abundant in sheltered water. L. digitata was confined to the more exposed, steeper shore. The average horizontal extent of the seaweed zone was 369 m, and the greatest depth of significant amounts of seaweed 20 to 30 m. Laminaria longicruris contributed 36% of the total biomass, and Laminaria spp. and Agarum together constituted 83%, while intertidal seaweeds contributed less than 10% of the biomass. The estimated average total biomass per m of shore line was 1,481 kg fresh weight, 326 kg dry weight, 98 kg carbon, or 980x103 kcal. When averaged over the whole area of the bay, the corresponding figures were 1.38 kg/m2 fresh weight, 0.30 kg/m2 dry weight, 91 g/m2 carbon or 912 kcal/m2. Dry matter of Laminaria was 15 to 27% of fresh weight in blades, 10 to 12% in stipes. Bayesian network analyses can be used to interactively change the strength of effect of variables in a model to explore complex relationships in new ways. In doing so, they allow one to identify influential nodes that are not well studied empirically so that future research can be prioritized. We identified relationships in host and pathogen biology to examine disease‐driven declines of amphibians associated with amphibian chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis). We constructed a Bayesian network consisting of behavioral, genetic, physiological, and environmental variables that influence disease and used them to predict host population trends. We varied the impacts of specific variables in the model to reveal factors with the most influence on host population trend. The behavior of the nodes (the way in which the variables probabilistically responded to changes in states of the parents, which are the nodes or variables that directly influenced them in the graphical model) was consistent with published results. The frog population had a 49% probability of decline when all states were set at their original values, and this probability increased when body temperatures were cold, the immune system was not suppressing infection, and the ambient environment was conducive to growth of B. dendrobatidis. These findings suggest the construction of our model reflected the complex relationships characteristic of host–pathogen interactions. Changes to climatic variables alone did not strongly influence the probability of population decline, which suggests that climate interacts with other factors such as the capacity of the frog immune system to suppress disease. Changes to the adaptive immune system and disease reservoirs had a large effect on the population trend, but there was little empirical information available for model construction. Our model inputs can be used as a base to examine other systems, and our results show that such analyses are useful tools for reviewing existing literature, identifying links poorly supported by evidence, and understanding complexities in emerging infectious‐disease systems. 相似文献
