The level of chromosome aberrations at different stages of mitosis has been studied in the seed sprout meristem of four conifer species growing in the Southern Urals in areas differing in the kind and degree of industrial pollution. The results provide evidence for the adverse effect of pollution on the chromosomal machinery of these species. With respect to environmental quality assessment, the Scots pine is the most sensitive indicator species among conifers growing in the Southern Urals and analysis of chromosome aberrations in anaphase-telophase cells is most effective among the cytogenetic methods tested. 相似文献

The fungicide captan (cis-N-((trichloromethyl)thio) 4-cyclo-hexene-1,2-dicarboximide) was applied at the rate of 2.4 g/l to apple trees (c.v. Golden Delicious) individually or as part of a standard treatment program where it was applied eight times during the growing season together with several pesticides. Leaf samples (100 discs of 2.2 cm diameter) were collected from treated and control trees before treatment and at 0, 1, 3, 7, 14, 28, 56, 90 and 112 days after treatment. Fruit samples were taken at mid-season (56 days) and at harvest (112 days). The objective of this study was to determine the captan residue and mutagenicity of leaf and fruit extracts to ascertain the potential health hazard to agricultural workers in these orchards. Surface residues were extracted from leaves and fruits with methylene chloride. These extracts were subsequently analyzed for captan by gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) utilizing an electron-capture detector, and for mutagenicity with two strains (TA98 and TA100) of Salmonella typhimurium, with and without microsomal enzyme activation. Positive mutagenic effects were observed with strain TA100 at 0-14 days post spray, even with extracts from one leaf disc's surface (3.8 cm2) of the single treatment. Captan residues in these samples indicated a decline from 9.3 micrograms/cm2 at 0 days to 0.80 micrograms/cm2 at 14 days and a trace after 112 days. With the standard treatment, in which captan was incorporated eight times in the program starting at the 7-day interval, leaf extracts showed mutagenic activity at 7, 14, 28 and 90 days. Captan residues at these intervals were 11.4, 5.0, 4.1 and 3.4 micrograms/cm2, respectively. Fruit sample extracts of the standard spray were mutagenic to the tester strains TA100 and TA98 both at mid-season and at harvest. Residues of captan on fruits declined from 10.4 micrograms/cm2 at mid-season to 1.1 micrograms/cm2 at harvest. No mutagenic activity was detected with extracts from fruit samples from the single captan application. 相似文献

Determining the scale of larval dispersal and population connectivity in demersal fishes is a major challenge in marine ecology.
Historically, considerations of larval dispersal have ignored the possible contributions of larval behaviour, but we show
here that even young, small larvae have swimming, orientation and vertical positioning capabilities that can strongly influence
dispersal outcomes. Using young (11–15 days), relatively poorly developed (8–10 mm), larvae of the pomacentrid damselfish,
Amblyglyphidodon curacao (identified using mitochondrial DNA), we studied behaviour relevant to dispersal in the laboratory and sea on windward and
leeward sides of Lizard Island, Great Barrier Reef. Behaviour varied little with size over the narrow size range examined.
Critical speed was 27.5 ± 1.0 cm s−1 (30.9 BL s−1), and in situ speed was 13.6 ± 0.6 cm s−1. Fastest individuals were 44.6 and 25.0 cm s−1, for critical and in situ speeds, respectively. In situ speed was about 50% of critical speed and equalled mean current speed.
Unfed larvae swam 172 ± 29 h at 8–10 cm s−1 (52.0 ± 8.6 km), and lost 25% wet weight over that time. Vertical distribution differed between locations: modal depth was
2.5–5.0 and 10.0–12.5 m at leeward and windward sites, respectively. Over 80% of 71 larvae observed in situ had directional
swimming trajectories. Larvae avoided NW bearings, with an overall mean SE swimming direction, regardless of the direction
to nearest settlement habitat. Larvae made smaller changes between sequential bearings of swimming direction when swimming
SE than in other directions, making it more likely they would continue to swim SE. When swimming NW, 62% of turns were left
(more than in other directions), which would quickly result in swimming direction changing away from NW. This demonstrates
the larvae knew the direction in which they were swimming and provides insight into how they achieved SE swimming direction.
Although the cues used for orientation are unclear, some possibilities seemingly can be eliminated. Thus, A. curacao larvae near Lizard Island, on average swam into the average current at a speed equivalent to it, could do this for many hours,
and chose different depths in different locations. These behaviours will strongly influence dispersal, and are similar to
behaviour of other settlement-stage pomacentrid larvae that are older and larger. 相似文献

The dispersion of 222Rn from emitted waste gases at Wairakei geothermal power station, New Zealand, is modelled. It is concluded that resulting concentrations in the nearby township of Taupo will never exceed the maximum permissible in any meteorological situation. The greatest possible accumulation is calculated to be less than one eighth of the normal background radon concentration. A more realistic set of assumptions predicts long-term mean concentrations about 4% of background levels. A new geothermal power station, Ohaaki, a factor of three times more distant, is calculated to produce ten times lower concentrations than Wairakei. Measurements using a few passive solid-state radon detectors show that the natural variation of radon concentrations greatly exceeds any calculated contribution from either geothermal station; hence, much of the radon is probably due to more local minor sources. Local sources have increased due to draw-off of ground water by the Wairakei station. Thus, there could be some indirect contribution to radon concentrations by its operation. The measured six-month integrated mean radon concentration at Taupo is a significant fraction of the maximum permissible concentration. It seems likely that natural sources alone may lead to levels in air which are above the maximum when temperature inversion exists. Radioecological conditions have been estimated in Lake Chervyanoe located on the central axis of the Eastern Ural Radioactive Trace (EURT) about 100–110 km northeast of the Mayak Production Association. Data on the 90Sr and 137Cs contents in the main components of the lake, the distribution of these radionuclides over the profile of bottom sediments, and their amounts in the lake are presented. The experimental data have been used to construct mathematical models for estimating changes in the radionuclide concentrations and amounts in the water and bottom sediments of the lake over a long period after the nuclear accident, as well as the tritium content of the lake water in different periods of time. 相似文献

The structural-temporal organization of a murine rodent community in the taiga has been studied near Lake Teletskoe, Mountain Altai. The results show that the long-term dynamics of indices characterizing community diversity depend mainly on changes in the structure of dominance rather than on the population dynamics of species. The distribution of species in the factor space corresponds to their preference for certain biotopes, from dry to relatively moist. An analysis of relationships within the rodent community has revealed the synchronous dynamics of species abundance and antiphase pattern of changes in the structural indices of dominant species. 相似文献
