Oil and gas activities have occurred in the Bakken region of North Dakota and nearby states and provinces since the 1950s but began increasing rapidly around 2008 due to new extraction methods. Three receptor-based techniques were used to examine the potential impacts of oil and gas extraction activities on airborne particulate concentrations in Class I areas in and around the Bakken. This work was based on long-term measurements from the Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE) monitoring network. Spatial and temporal patterns in measured concentrations were examined before and after 2008 to better characterize the influence of these activities. A multisite back-trajectory analysis and a receptor-based source apportionment model were used to estimate impacts. Findings suggest that recent Bakken oil and gas activities have led to an increase in regional fine (PM2.5—particles with aerodynamic diameters <2.5 µm) soil and elemental carbon (EC) concentrations, as well as coarse mass (CM = PM10–PM2.5). Influences on sulfate and nitrate concentrations were harder to discern due to the concurrent decline in regional emissions of precursors to these species from coal-fired electric generating stations. Impacts were largest at sites in North Dakota and Montana that are closest to the most recent drilling activity.
Implications: The increase in oil and gas activities in the Bakken region of North Dakota and surrounding areas has had a discernible impact on airborne particulate concentrations that impact visibility at protected sites in the region. However, the impact has been at least partially offset by a concurrent reduction in emissions from coal-fired electric generating stations. Two species of marine mussel, Mytilus edulis and M. galloprovincialis hybridize on the coasts of western Europe. Studies of hybrid mussel populations have shown that natural selection favors
M. galloprovincialis-like genotypes within this hybrid zone. Many hypotheses have been proposed to explain differential mortality in these populations.
This study tests two hypotheses addressing factors of mortality in a population, and describes yearly energy storage and reproductive
cycles of these two species and their hybrids. No evidence was found that the two taxa have different overall levels of reproductive
effort or parasite infestation. They do, however, have asynchronous spawning periods and divergent energy storage strategies.
In the year of this study, 1993, the M. edulis genotypic class spawned as a group in June and July. After spawning, they built up a high level of mantle energy-storage
tissues that are probably used for gametogenesis in the following winter and spring. The M. galloprovincialis genotypic group, however, spawned asynchronously, beginning in June and finishing by August, and did not build up high levels
of energy-storage tissues in summer. These results add a temporal component to the interpretation of selective forces acting
to shape this hybrid zone. Vulnerability of each species to mortality factors may differ because of their divergent reproductive
and energy-storage cycles.

Emissions of air pollutants cause damage to health and crops, but several air pollutants also have an effect on climate through radiative forcing. We investigate efficiency gains achieved by integrating climate impacts of air pollutants into air quality strategies for the EU region. The pollutants included in this study are SO2, NH3, VOC, CO, NOx, black carbon, organic carbon, PM2.5, and CH4. We illustrate the relative importance of climate change effects compared to damage to health and crops, as well as monetary gains of including climate change contributions. The analysis considers marginal abatement costs and compares air quality and climate damage in Euros. We optimize abatement policies with respect to both climate and health impacts, which imply implementing all measures that yield a net benefit. The efficiency gains of the integrated policy are in the order of 2.5 billion Euros, compared to optimal abatement based on health and crop damage only, justifying increased abatement efforts of close to 50%. Climate effect of methane is the single most important factor. If climate change is considered on a 20- instead of a 100-year time-scale, the efficiency gain almost doubles. The hygroscopic nature of atmospheric fine aerosol was investigated at a rural site in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park during July and August 1995. Passing the sample aerosol through an inlet, which housed an array of Perma Pure diffusion dryers, controlled the sample aerosol's relative humidity (RH). After conditioning the aerosol sample in the inlet, the light scattering coefficient and the aerosol size distribution were simultaneously measured. During this study, the conditioned aerosol's humidity ranged between 5% < RH < 95%. Aerosol response curves were produced using the ratio bspw/bspd; where bspw is the scattering coefficient measured at some RH greater than 20% and bspd is the scattering coefficient of the "dry" aerosol. For this work, any sample RH values below 15% were considered dry. Results of this investigation showed that the light scattering ratio increased continuously and smoothly over the entire range of relative humidity. The magnitude of the ratio at a particular RH value, however, varied considerably in time, particularly for RH values greater than approximately 60%. Curves of the scattering coefficient ratios as a function of RH were generated for each day and compared to the average 12-hour chemical composition of the aerosol. This comparison showed that for any particular RH value the ratio was highest during time periods of high sulfate concentrations and lowest during time periods of high soil or high organic carbon concentrations. 相似文献

Aerosol water content was determined from relative humidity controlled optical particle counter (ASASP-X) size distribution measurements made during the Southeastern Aerosol and Visibility Study (SEAVS) in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park during summer 1995. Since the scattering response function of the ASASP-X is sensitive to particle refractive index, a technique for calibrating the ASASP-X for any real refractive index was developed. A new iterative process was employed to calculate water mass concentration and wet refractive index as functions of relative humidity. Experimental water mass concentrations were compared to theoretically predicted values assuming only ammonium sulfate compounds were hygroscopic. These comparisons agreed within experimental uncertainty. Estimates of particle hygroscopicity using a rural aerosol model of refractive index as a function of relative humidity demonstrated no significant differences from those made with daily varying refractive index estimates. Although aerosol size parameters were affected by the assumed chemical composition, forming ratios of these parameters nearly canceled these effects. 相似文献

Aquaculture is the fastest growing animal producing sector in the world and is expected to play an important role in global
food supply. Along with this growth, concerns have been raised about the environmental effects of escapees and pollution,
fish welfare, and consumer health as well as the use of marine resources for producing fish feed. In this paper we present
some of the major challenges salmon farming is facing today. We discuss issues of relevance to how to ensure sustainability,
by focusing on animal production systems, breeding approaches, sources for feed ingredients, and genetic engineering strategies.
Other crucial issues such as animal welfare, environmental quality, and ethics are elaborated with regard to relevance for
the sustainability of aquaculture. Additionally, we comment on socio-economic distributive implications by intellectual property
rights (IPR) strategies on access to genetic material and traceability. To improve sustainability of salmon farming we suggest
that there is a need for new approaches to guide research, for identification of ethical issues, and for engaging stakeholders

ABSTRACT. Despite radical differences in water laws, water management agencies, approaches to water planning, and financial resources, Mexico and the United States forged a common program to manage water and related land on the Rio Grande. Actions of Rio Grande Commissions related to stream gaging, boundary definition, and multiple-purpose construction projects are among the more successful international water-management efforts in the world. Cost-sharing arrangements promoted rapid completing of international works. However, joint action accomplished only part of expectations. International developments were competitive rather than complementary until basin water appropriation was virtually complete. Moreover, Commissions were not empowered to consider long-range competitive water needs, or regional water requirements, throughout the basin. International groundwater use coordination does not exist. International structures produce less than anticipated benefits. Hydroelectric generators are financial liabilities, irrigated acreage exceeds dependable streamflow, and soil salinization is experienced. Unanticipated environmental changes occurred in every major program. The Rio Grande experience points to the need for society to specify goals to which the use of water should contribute and to specify priorities for water use among different sectors of river basins and various segments of society. 相似文献

Despite increasing attention to management of headwater streams as sources of water, sediment, and wood to downstream rivers,
the extent of headwater channels and perennial flow remain poorly known and inaccurately depicted on topographic maps and
in digital hydrographic data. This study reports field mapping of channel head and perennial flow initiation locations in
forested landscapes underlain by sandstone and basalt lithologies in Washington State, USA. Contributing source areas were
delineated for each feature using a digital elevation model (DEM) as well as a Global Positioning System device in the field.
Systematic source area–slope relationships described in other landscapes were not evident for channel heads in either lithology.
In addition, substantial variability in DEM-derived source area sizes relative to field-delineated source areas indicates
that in this area, identification of an area–slope relationship, should one even exist, would be difficult. However, channel
heads and stream heads, here defined as the start of perennial flow, appear to be co-located within both of the lithologies,
which together with lateral expansion and contraction of surface water around channel heads on a seasonal cycle in the basalt
lithology, suggest a controlling influence of bedrock springs for that location. While management strategies for determining
locations of channel heads and perennial flow initiation in comparable areas could assign standard source area sizes based
on limited field data collection within that landscape, field-mapped source areas that support perennial flow are much smaller
