The formation of stable and potentially hazardous compounds as a result of photochemical transformation of pharmaceutical
substances in the aquatic environment implies a demand for standard compounds within environmental analysis. The major phototransformation
products of diclofenac are comprised of substituted diphenylamines and carbazoles. Substituted diphenylamines were synthesized
by Ullmann condensation reactions between anilines and halobenzenes. Monochlorocarbazoles were obtained from palladium-catalyzed
intramolecular coupling reactions of monochlorinated diphenylamines, photocyclization of dichlorinated diphenylamines or by
direct chlorination of carbazole. The availability of synthetic photoproducts of diclofenac is of critical importance for

Summary. Dufour glands of Paratrechina longicornis were analyzed chemically using GC-MS techniques. The glands contained twelve alkanes between C9 and C20 chain length with undecane and tridecane as the main components, six alkenes (1- and 4-undecene, 1-, 4-, and 6- tridecene,
and heptadecadiene), two alkyl formates (C11 and C13), and saturated and polyunsaturated acids. Many of the alkanes and alkenes were behaviorally active causing a short lasting
attraction of ants with different intensity. Detection of the major gland compound undecane in recruitment trails by in vivo
SPME sampling provided evidence for its use as a recruitment pheromone. Both poison gland (formic acid) and Dufour gland (undecane)

A new approach was developed to evaluate the implications of the spatiotemporal variability of green vegetation for the dispersion of livestock that is required to access quality forage in semi-arid Africa. Maximum NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) at 1 km2 resolution was determined for concentric rings (0–31 km radii) around 227 individual sample locations within the study area for 14 dates (between 1 April to 1 November) annually over the 2000–2010 period. A sigmoidal curve was fitted to points within the maximum NDVI × distance radii space to determine the asymptote distance (AD) – the radius at which further dispersion from the sample location does not lead to significant gains in access to green forage. AD was found to: increase with latitude (or increasing aridity); decline as the rainy season proceeds; and show no trend over the 2000–2010 period. These results introduce much-needed empirical data to current debates surrounding the scales of governance to support livestock mobility. 相似文献

The use of intensive forestry on part of the forested area in Sweden increases the production of forest biomass and enables an increased use of such biomass to mitigate climate change. However, with increasing conflicting interests in forests and forestry, the success of such a strategy depends on the public acceptance. In this paper, the results of a mail survey show that although a majority of the general public in Sweden supports measures to increase forest growth, they oppose the use of intensive forestry practices such as the cultivation of exotic tree species, clones, and forest fertilization. The acceptance of such practices is mainly influenced by the perceptions of their environmental consequences. Public acceptance was highest for forest fertilization, whereas clone cultivation was the least accepted practice. 相似文献

Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are commonly considered as the main source of pharmaceuticals in surface waters. Here, however, we show that an open-air festival, attracting approximately 10,000 visitors per year at the shores of River Fyris upstream of Uppsala WWTP, can temporarily result in a higher pharmaceutical input into the river water than the WWTP. Studying the influence of Uppsala Reggae festival on the occurrence of ten commonly used acidic and basic pharmaceuticals upstream, in the effluent, and downstream of the Uppsala WWTP, we found that occasional heavy rainfalls during the festival in 2008 severely increased the mass flows of all pharmaceuticals at the WWTP upstream site. Also, strong increases in ammonium (210-fold), nitrate (21-fold), and total nitrogen (21-fold) mass flows were observed. The pharmaceutical mass flows at the upstream site were up to 3.4 times higher than those observed in the WWTP effluent. In contrast, in 2009, the festival was not accompanied with rainfalls and no major additional input of pharmaceuticals and nitrogen was observed. The replacement of fossil fuels by biofuels could be an important means of reducing net carbon dioxide (CO2) emission. An estimation of the CO2 mitigation efficiency of biofuel systems depends on the method and assumptions used. Here, different parameters and methods are discussed for comparing fossil-fuel- and biofuel-based systems. Three parameters are suggested: the monetary cost, the primary energy cost and the biofuel cost of CO2 mitigation. They are defined as the difference in monetary expenditure, primary energy use and biofuel use between the compared systems, divided by the difference in net CO2 emission between the systems. Cogeneration and separate production of electricity and heat is then compared using these parameters and the methods of multi-functional products or subtraction. In both methods, either electricity or heat is regarded as the main product and the other is regarded as a by-product. The multi-functional method is preferable due to its transparency as both the main product and the by-product are part of the functional unit. Using heat as the main product illustrates the typical situation that the heat demand limits the use of cogeneration. When comparing systems the output from them should not differ. If the by-product is not fully, cogenerated part of the by-product has to be produced separately. A logical choice for producing this part of the by-product is to use a similar fuel and technology as used for cogeneration. 相似文献

Interactive effects of three alternating normoxia-hypoxia cycles on benthic prey exploitation by mobile fish (spot, Leiostomus xanthurus; and hogchoker, Trinectes maculatus) and a burrowing crustacean (Squilla empusa) were investigated in the York River, Chesapeake Bay, Virginia, USA, in 1989. Predators collected in four depth strata (A: 5 to 10 m; B: 10 to 14 m; C: 14 to 20 m; D:>20 m) variously affected by hypoxia were separated into size classes (three for spot and two each for hogchoker and mantis shrimp) to examine potential ontogenetic influences in prey selection. The most severe effects of hypoxia on the benthos occurred in the two deepest strata (C and D) and decreased in shallower strata (B>A), with Stratum A never affected by low oxygen. Predators investigated exhibited dietary evidence of optimal prey exploitation during or immediately after hypoxic events. In most instances gut contents contained significantly larger, deeper-burrowing prey during periods of low oxygen than during alternating peroids of normal oxygen levels. Spot consumed a greater biomass (45 to 73%) of polychaetes than other prey, with crustaceans initially also constituting a main dietary component but decreasing in importance later in the study period. The deep-burrowing anemone, Edwardsia elegans, was an important prey species for spot, particularly in the lower depth strata affected by hypoxia. Prey consumed by 10-to 15-cm-long spot increased significantly in size during some hypoxic events, suggesting a sublethal effect of hypoxia on large benthic species. Polychaetes (primarily Glycera americana, Notomastis latericeus and Loimia medusa) were dominant dietary components in hogchoker, making up between 85 and 98% of the diet. Bivalve siphons became important prey for hogchoker in the three deepest strata and were only consumed after the August hypoxia. Stomach contents of mantis shrimp were difficult to identify in most instances due to the near complete mastication of consumed prey. Crustaceans were important prey initially but became less conspicuous in the diet subsequent to the July hypoxia event, when hydroids became more dominant. Overall, predator species exhibited optimal exploitation of moribund or slowly recovering benthos affected by hypoxia. The sublethal effects of hypoxia through increased availability of benthos to resident predators can have important consequences for energy flow in areas such as the York River which experience periodic low-oxygen cycles. 相似文献
