Lake Apopka in Florida, USA, is a large (area=124 km2), hypertrophic (mean total phosphorus=0.220 g/m3; mean chlorophylla=60 mg/m3) lake, with a large sedimentary store of available P (1635 × 106 g P). Phosphorus loading from floodplain farms (132 × 106 g P/yr) has been the primary cause of eutrophication. Assuming elimination of farm P loading, the Vollenweider model predicts
a decline in equilibrium P concentration from 0.270 to 0.024 g/m3, if the P sedimentation coefficient (σ) remains constant. It is likely, however, that the value for σ will fall with the
elimination of farm loading due to unabated internal P loading from the sediments. Under a worst-case scenario (σ=0), the
model predicts that exportation of P from the lake via wetland filtration will greatly accelerate the lake's recovery. Recirculation
of lake water through a 21-km2, created wetland and elimination of farm P loading is projected to result in a negative P balance for the lake (−23 × 106 g P/yr) leading to depletion of P stores in the lake in about 60 yr. The estimated cost of the project, $20 million, is less
than 3% of the estimated cost of dredging. A 3.65-km2 demonstration project is underway to test and refine the wetland filtration technique. We believe the technique could be

Egress models typically use one of three methods to represent the physical space in which the agents move: coarse network, fine network or continuous. In this work, we present a novel approach to represent space, which we call the ‘Hybrid Spatial Discretisation’ (HSD), in which all three spatial representations can be utilised to represent the physical space of the geometry within a single integrated software tool. Anaerobic digestion (AD) as a waste treatment practice has existed for nearly 200 years and has become an accepted option for many farming and small-scale residential operations. Many developing countries now encourage the use of AD in order to meet new environmental regulations and/or to provide small amounts of energy resulting from methane generated during the process. This development has been met with some difficulty due to the lack of resources and knowledge of the systems in many of the rural communities in which these digesters are placed. A properly designed AD system can help prevent soil and water pollution as well as help mitigate methane emissions by capturing them for use as a potential energy source. This paper focuses on providing guidance to the proper design and sizing of an AD system for typical small farms, which account for the majority of dairy farms worldwide. A focus was on the implementation of such systems as they might be applied in Central America, although the aspects studied here can be applied for AD systems handling animal waste streams practically anywhere. We provide a method for sizing of anaerobic digester systems based on design standards from the US National Resource Conservation Service and using field sampled data of holding pen wash water runoff. An overview of the decision process for alternative designs is given, and simple-to-use nomographs are presented for use in sizing of an anaerobic digester system for smaller (non-industrial)-scale farms. 相似文献

Both companies have endorsed the CERES principles, a model corporate code of environmental conduct developed by the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Economies (CERES). This model code generally goes well beyond what is now typically required of industry to maintain compliance with already stringent requirements established by regulatory agencies. And the CERES principles are not the only game in town. Many other environmental initiatives have surfaced both in the United States and abroad over the past few years. Postelsia palmaeformis were collected from the lower intertidal at Pigeon Point, California, USA, in May 1987, and the proximate composition and allocation of energy to the various body components were determined. The holdfast and stipe have a proximate composition (% dry weight) of ca. 40% ash, 5.3% protein, 1% lipid, 2% soluble carbohydrate, and 55% insoluble carbohydrate. The fronds have a proximate composition of ca. 25% ash, 6.5% protein, 2% lipid, 3% soluble carbohydrate, and 65% insoluble carbohydrate. The energetic level was ca. 12 kJ g-1 dry wt and ca. 19 kJ g-1 ash-free dry wt. The relative proportion of three plant components varied, comprising 26, 39, and 35% wet wt and 20, 42, and 38% kJ for the holdfast, stipe, and fronds, respectively. A plant with a basal stipe diameter of 33 mm contains 114 g wet wt and 266 kJ. The maximal density found in May 1987 was 826 plants, 49 301 g wet wt, and 106 157 kJ m-2.P. palmaeformis differs in these characteristics from another intertidal pheophyte,Durvillaea antarctica, that is found in a high-energy intertidal zone. 相似文献

The resonant interaction of surface and internal waves produces a nonlinear mechanism for energy transfer among wave components in oceans, lakes, and estuaries. In many field situations, the stratification may be well approximated by a two-layer fluid with a diffuse interface. The growth and damping rates of sub-harmonic interfacial waves generated by a surface wave through a three-wave resonant interaction are measured in the laboratory. These measurements are compared with theoretical predictions. A diffuse interface reduces the damping rate and increases the growth rate. The predicted growth rate provides excellent comparison with the laboratory measurements. The inclusion of the effects of a diffuse interface significantly improve the comparison. 相似文献

The southern Yucatán contains the largest expanse of seasonal tropical forests remaining in Mexico, forming an ecocline between the drier north of the peninsula and the humid Petén, Guatemala. The Calakmul Biosphere Reserve resides in the center of this region as part of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor. The reserve's functions are examined in regard to land changes throughout the region, generated over the last 40 years by increasing settlement and the expansion and intensification of agriculture. These changes are documented from 1987/1988 to 2000, and their implications regarding the capacity of the reserve to protect the ecocline, forest habitats, and butterfly diversity are addressed. The results indicate that the current landscape matrix serves the biotic diversity of the reserve, with several looming caveats involving the loss of humid forests and the interruption of biota flow across the ecocline, and the amount and proximity of older forest patches beyond the reserve. The highly dynamic land cover changes underway in this economic frontier warrant an adaptive management approach that monitors the major changes underway in mature forest types, while the paucity of systematic ecological and environment-development studies is rectified in order to inform policy and practice. 相似文献

Training has been an important component of the environmental audit profession since its outset some 15–20 years ago. Training and education have taken on a variety of forms—from audit texts and articles, to formal courses, to videotapes, to on-the-job training programs. These efforts have helped to advance the sophistication of environmental auditing over the past few years. Now, with the advent of the international ISO 14012 Environmental Auditor Qualification Guidelines,1 the auditing profession in the United States and around the world likely will be transformed in the near future. In fact, many organizations are now reengineering their programs in anticipation of the emerging Guidelines. The expected transformation holds for training and education programs as well. This article suggests some of the ways in which environmental audit training is likely to be reshaped as a result of ISO 14012. Offerors of training courses and seminars would be wise to anticipate the changes and modify their programs accordingly. A quick response could provide a competitive advantage. Moreover, corporate audit program managers should conduct critical evaluations of commercial offerings to assure that the programs' contents are consistent with ISO 14012 “auditor certification” expectations. 相似文献
