Sustainability projects initiated by community groups can be significant in their contribution to the overall process of Local Agenda 21 planning and in their substantive contribution to sustainable communities. Community gardens differ from public gardens in that they are managed by community members rather than by local governments, although they may be located on council land. Community gardens vary in type from collections of individual plots to large-scale collaborative projects for the benefit of the wider community. Their roles include the production of fresh organic food; the creation of community places; and the use and dissemination of community science and innovative technologies. This paper reviews the types and roles of community gardens, and provides a case study of a community garden in Western Australia. It analyses the lessons learned from this particular case and the potential contribution of community gardens to Local Agenda 21 planning and to physical, ecological, sociocultural and economic sustainability. 相似文献

Recruitment is essential for the maintenance of populations, but far more is typically known about the more easily-observed
adult stages than their smaller, often microscopic early life-history counterparts. This discrepancy can be particularly problematic
for populations of foundation species that create biogenic habitat for a multitude of other taxa, but are themselves prime
candidates for exploitation, fragmentation, and loss, and therefore become the focus of restoration efforts partly or fully
dependent on recruitment. The purpose of this study was to improve ecological understanding for early life-history stages
of the habitat-forming marine alga Cystoseira barbata (Stackhouse) C. Agardh (Fucales: Sargassaceae), member of a genus that has experienced considerable fragmentation and population
decline on European coasts. Using experimental manipulations of water temperature, light intensity, and sediment accumulation,
we observed that sediment virtually precluded recruitment of C. barbata, and greatly impacted the survival of recently settled germlings (up to ~83% mortality). Stronger intensities of light facilitated
the growth of germlings, including the capacity for ~50% of them to outgrow detrimental sediment and survive. Temperature
(10 vs. 16°C) had no effect on early recruitment, survival, or growth. This information helps to identify likely causes and
locations of recruitment failure, and by extension, the conditions needed (either naturally or through human intervention)
to facilitate recruitment and possible habitat restoration. Ultimately, this knowledge can increase our capacity to predict

ABSTRACT: Forestation of riparian areas has long been promoted to restore stream ecosystems degraded by agriculture in central North America. Although trees and shrubs in the riparian zone can provide many benefits to streams, grassy or herbaceous riparian vegetation can also provide benefits and may be more appropriate in some situations. Here we review some of the positive and negative implications of grassy versus wooded riparian zones and discuss potential management outcomes. Compared to wooded areas, grassy riparian areas result in stream reaches with different patterns of bank stability, erosion, channel morphology, cover for fish, terrestrial runoff, hydrology, water temperature, organic matter inputs, primary production, aquatic macroinvertebrates, and fish. Of particular relevance in agricultural regions, grassy riparian areas may be more effective in reducing bank erosion and trapping suspended sediments than wooded areas. Maintenance of grassy riparian vegetation usually requires active management (e.g., mowing, burning, herbicide treatments, and grazing), as successional processes will tend ultimately to favor woody vegetation. Riparian agricultural practices that promote a dense, healthy, grassy turf, such as certain types of intensively managed livestock grazing, have potential to restore degraded stream ecosystems. 相似文献

We sampled residues from high-order and low-order blow-in-place detonations of mortars and projectiles filled with Composition B (Comp B), a TNT and RDX mixture. Our goals were to (1) characterize the types of explosive particles, (2) estimate the explosive 'footprint' for different munitions, and (3) estimate the mass of Comp B remaining after each detonation. The aerial deposition of Comp B particles helps estimate how large of an area is contaminated by a low-order detonation and how best to sample residue resulting from different rounds. We found that the high-order detonations deposited microgram to milligram quantities whereas the low-order detonations deposited gram quantities of Comp B. For the high-order detonations the concentration of Comp B in the residue decreased as a function of distance from the blast. The low-order tests scattered centimeter-sized chunks and millimeter-sized or smaller particles of Comp B. The chunks were randomly scattered whereas the number of millimeter-sized particles decreased with distance from the detonation. For both high- and low-order detonations we found that the smaller munitions deposited less Comp B than the larger munitions and deposited it closer to the detonation point. 相似文献

Previous studies have identified the tropopause height (TH) as a promising fingerprint of climatic change. In the present paper, we report variations in TH for the Eurasian region over the period 1973–1998 and analyse the influence of the Northern Annular Mode (NAM) on these variations. As previous studies indicate that the greatest increases in TH occur in the extratropics, we focused our attention on this area. We applied a set of homogenization procedures to radiosonde data and considered three different scenarios that take into account change points and the main volcanic eruptions over the study period. Our results demonstrate that the number of stations with positive TH trends is very sensitive to the quality of data and the methods used to remove inhomogeneities. Consequently, when change points were included in the analysis, the number of stations with positive trends decreased markedly. Environmental conditions greatly impact the dynamics of host–pathogen relationships, affecting outbreaks and emergence of new diseases. In corals, epizootics have been a main contributor to the decline of reef ecosystems and rising sea surface temperatures associated with climate change are thought to exacerbate virulence of pathogens and/or compromise the immune responses of coral hosts. Among pathogens strategies, protease secretion is a common virulence factor that promotes colonization of the host. As such, protease inhibitors play an invaluable role to the host for protection against pathogen invasion. This study describes changes in activity of proteases secreted by the fungal pathogen, Aspergillus sydowii, and protease inhibitors of Gorgonia ventalina under ambient and elevated temperatures and health conditions (disease and healthy). G. ventalina colonies were collected from Florida Keys, Florida (24° 34.138N, 81° 22.905W) or La Parguera, Puerto Rico (17° 56.091N, 67° 02.577W) in 2007 and 2012, respectively. At elevated temperatures, protease activity was significantly higher than at ambient temperatures in A. sydowii. Temperature stress did not induce a change in protease inhibitor activity, but in healthy G. ventalina colonies, inhibitor activity against proteases was higher than in diseased individuals. Healthy colonies appear capable of resisting proteolytic activity, but diseased individuals are still likely affected by pathogen infections. These data suggest that rising sea surface temperatures due to climate change may increase levels of virulence (protease activity) of A. sydowii, while immunity (protease inhibitor) of G. ventalina may not be affected. 相似文献

The present study was aimed at the reclamation of harbour sediments contaminated with butyltin compounds (BTCs) by means of biostimulation and/or bioaugmentation experiments carried out in a 5-L slurry bioreactor. In the biostimulation experiment with inorganic nutrients, almost 50% of TBT was degraded in 20 weeks. In the bioaugmentation experiment with a microbial consortium, no significant degradation of TBT was observed. Conversely, bioaugmentation combined with biostimulation led to a decrease of ~50% in TBT after four weeks. A simple kinetic model fitted to the experimental data of BTC concentration allowed us to estimate that 10 weeks are needed to decrease BTC contamination by 90% using a strategy based on both biostimulation and bioaugmentation, and 29 weeks for a strategy using biostimulation only. Overall, our study indicates that strategies based on biostimulation coupled to bioaugmentation can be effective in significantly reducing the concentration of BTCs over relatively short timescales. 相似文献

Over the next century, elevated quantities of atmospheric CO2 are expected to penetrate into the oceans, causing a reduction in pH (?0.3/?0.4 pH unit in the surface ocean) and in the concentration of carbonate ions (so-called ocean acidification). Of growing concern are the impacts that this will have on marine and estuarine organisms and ecosystems. Marine shelled molluscs, which colonized a large latitudinal gradient and can be found from intertidal to deep-sea habitats, are economically and ecologically important species providing essential ecosystem services including habitat structure for benthic organisms, water purification and a food source for other organisms. The effects of ocean acidification on the growth and shell production by juvenile and adult shelled molluscs are variable among species and even within the same species, precluding the drawing of a general picture. This is, however, not the case for pteropods, with all species tested so far, being negatively impacted by ocean acidification. The blood of shelled molluscs may exhibit lower pH with consequences for several physiological processes (e.g. respiration, excretion, etc.) and, in some cases, increased mortality in the long term. While fertilization may remain unaffected by elevated pCO2, embryonic and larval development will be highly sensitive with important reductions in size and decreased survival of larvae, increases in the number of abnormal larvae and an increase in the developmental time. There are big gaps in the current understanding of the biological consequences of an acidifying ocean on shelled molluscs. For instance, the natural variability of pH and the interactions of changes in the carbonate chemistry with changes in other environmental stressors such as increased temperature and changing salinity, the effects of species interactions, as well as the capacity of the organisms to acclimate and/or adapt to changing environmental conditions are poorly described. 相似文献

Microbial degradation of azo dyes usually starts in anaerobic conditions with a reductive cleavage of the azo bond, followed by an aerobic step necessary for the degradation of the aromatic amines formed. Because some reductive processes take place also in presence of molecular oxygen, a one-step azo dye degrading process has been investigated. A microbial consortium able to degrade ethyl orange in aerobic conditions has been selected and immobilized in alginate beads coated with polyacrylamide resin. Different concentrations of ethyl orange have been completely degraded in the presence of 1% glucose or starch as cosubstrates, and different beads preparation procedures have been studied to determine the best condition for microbial degradation. The catalytic activity of the immobilized consortium improved during five serial processes carried out for 30 days at room temperature. Three pure cultures were then isolated from the consortium. The one with the greatest degrading activity, a filamentous fungus, had a degradative capacity similar to that of the whole consortium. 相似文献
