Marine sponges harbor dense and highly diverse bacterial communities, and some percentage of the microflora appears to be specialized for the sponge habitat. Bacterial diversity was examined in Chondrilla nucula Schmidt to test the hypothesis that some subset of sponge symbiont communities is highly similar regardless of the species of host or habitat requirements of the host. C. nucula was collected from a mangrove channel on Lower Matcumbe Key in the Florida Keys (25°53′N; 80°42′W) in August 1999. Domain-specific universal bacterial primers were used to amplify the 16S rDNA gene from genomic DNA that had been extracted from sponges and the surrounding water. An RFLP technique was used to assess diversity of sponge-associated and environmental bacterial communities. The clone library from C. nucula contained 21 operational taxonomic units (OTUs). None of the 53 OTUs from adjacent water samples were found in the C. nucula library indicating that a distinct community was present in the sponge. Sequence analysis indicated that C. nucula harbors a microbial community as diverse as the microbes from other sponges in different habitats around the world. Phylogenetic analysis placed several C. nucula clones in clades dominated by bacteria that appear to be sponge specialists (e.g., Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Cyanobacteria). Proportional representation of major bacterial taxonomic groups represented in symbiont communities was compared as a function of geographic location of sponge hosts. This study supports the hypothesis that sponges from different oceans existing in dissimilar habitats harbor closely related bacteria that are distinct from other bacterial lineages and appear specialized for residing within sponges.  相似文献

Gannet (Sula bassana) eggs collected from Ailsa Craig, Western Scotland between 1977-1998 have been analyzed retrospectively for several PCB congeners. Concentrations of a range of congeners were determined in 8-10 eggs analyzed separately for several individual years. All congeners declined in concentrations throughout the time period, but the rates of decline differed for different congeners. Declines were first order and half-lives varied between 5.4 years for PCB-101 to 10.1 years for PCB-180. Egg concentrations reflect the maternal body burden, which itself is controlled by the birds rate of intake (principally via the diet) and losses (via metabolism and other clearance mechanisms). The declining concentrations in eggs, therefore, broadly reflect reductions in prey concentrations (principally herring and mackerel) and--in turn--water column concentrations. Rates of change in PCB concentrations from this study were similar to those noted in fish-eating birds from the Baltic Sea and North American Great Lakes, and ambient air in the UK. This provides indirect evidence that gannet eggs are broadly reflecting regional/global scale clearance/removal mechanisms which are controlling ambient PCB concentrations.  相似文献

Summary Foundresses in pre-emergence and post-emergence nests of Belonogaster petiolata were organized into linear dominance hierarchies according to their level of physical aggression towards cofoundresses. The female at the top of the hierarchy became the queen, while foundresses ranked below her became worker-like subordinates. In pre-matrifilial colonies, worker offspring were socially subordinate to both their queen and the subordinate foundresses. Queens of matrifilial colonies retained full social dominance over their workers. Queens were reproductively dominant over subordinates and workers, and laid the majority of, if not all, surviving eggs. Subordinate-laid eggs were invariably discovered and destroyed by the queen through oophagy; workers in pre-matrifilial and matrifilial colonies never laid or ate eggs. Colonies contained a single (and the same) functional queen throughout the pre- and post-emergence periods and were, therefore, long-term monogynous. In both established pre-emergence colonies and post-emergence colonies, virtually all foraging for food and nesting material was performed by the subordinates and workers. More dominant subordinates generally foraged less than low-ranked subordinates. Queens were more active builders than subordinates or workers in pre-matrifilial and matrifilial colonies. Queens enjoyed a surplus in exchanged food loads, while subordinates and workers did not. Among cofoundresses, an advantage in food exchange was also positively associated with dominance rank. Queens solicited larvae for their salivary fluid more often than did subordinates and workers. Among cofoundresses, frequency of adult-larva trophallaxis was positively associated with rank. Queens rested most often in the central zones of the nest containing late instar larvae and pupae, while subordinates and particularly workers spent more time in the peripheral, broodless regions of the nest. This paper is dedicated to the late Professor Leo Pardi, whose pioneering studies of Belonogaster served as a constant source of inspiration and reference for the present work  相似文献

Summary The contributions of adult (>18 months) and yearling (10–18 months) African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus), to raising pups were quantified at eight natal dens, where pups remain for their first three months of life.Adults between 2–6 years of age did most of the hunting, and the dominant male often made the first grab at fleeing prey. Yearlings contributed to the hunting but were reluctant to tackle large prey animals. Yearlings and breeding females had prior access to food. Yearlings and adults regurgitated comparable amounts of food, but in one pack watched at a time of food shortage, the yearlings failed to regurgitate and stole food from the pups.Dominant dogs chased predators, especially spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) from the area of the den more frequently than other adults or yearlings chased predators. Mothers, particularly in the first six weeks post-partum, stayed and protected the pups when the pack hunted. There is a positive, but non-significant correlation between the number of adult helpers and the number of pups raised. However, the sex ratio bias towards males at birth suggests that male helpers (which predominate) usually increase pup survivorship. The roles of direct and indirect selection in the evolution of the helping behavior are discussed. Indirect selection has probably played an important role in the unusual post-reproductive survival of males and their helping behavior.Serengeti Wildlife Research Institute contribution number 284  相似文献

Management of marine mega-fauna in a changing climate is constrained by a series of uncertainties, often related to climate change projections, ecological responses, and the effectiveness of strategies in alleviating climate change impacts. Uncertainties can be reduced over time through adaptive management. Adaptive management is a framework for resource conservation that promotes iterative learning-based decision making. To successfully implement the adaptive management cycle, different steps (planning, designing, learning and adjusting) need to be systematically implemented to inform earlier steps in an iterative way. Despite the critical role that adaptive management is likely to play in addressing the impacts of climate change on marine mega-fauna few managers have successfully implemented an adaptive management approach. We discuss the approaches necessary to implement each step of an adaptive management cycle to manage marine mega-fauna in a changing climate, highlighting the steps that require further attention to fully implement the process. Examples of sharks and rays (Selachimorpha and Batoidea) on the Great Barrier Reef and little penguins, Eudyptula minor, in south-eastern Australia are used as case studies. We found that successful implementation of the full adaptive management cycle to marine mega-fauna needs managers and researchers to: (1) obtain a better understanding of the capacity of species to adapt to climate change to inform the planning step; (2) identify strategies to directly address impacts in the marine environment to inform the designing step; and (3) develop systematic evaluation and monitoring programs to inform the learning step. Further, legislation needs to flexible to allow for management to respond.  相似文献

Social network analysis has become a vital tool for studying patterns of individual interactions that influence a variety of processes in behavior, ecology, and evolution. Taxa in which interactions are indirect or whose social behaviors are difficult to observe directly are being excluded from this rapidly expanding field. Here, we introduce a method that uses a probabilistic and spatially implicit technique for delineating social interactions. Kernel density estimators (KDE) are nonparametric techniques that are often used in home range analyses and allow researchers studying social networks to generate interaction matrices based on shared space use. We explored the use of KDE analysis and the effects of altering KDE input parameters on social network metrics using data from a natural population of the spatially persistent forked fungus beetle, Bolitotherus cornutus.  相似文献

There are multiple challenges regarding use and governance of landscapes’ goods, functions and intangible values for ecosystem health and human well-being. One group of challenges is to measure and assess principal sustainability dimensions through performance targets, so stakeholders have transparent information about states and trends. Another group is to develop adaptive governance at multiple levels, and management of larger geographical areas across scales. Addressing these challenges, we present a framework for transdisciplinary research using multiple landscapes as place-based case studies that integrates multiple research disciplines and non-academic actors: (1) identify a suite of landscapes, and for each (2) review landscape history, (3) map stakeholders, use and non-use values, products and land use, (4) analyze institutions, policies and the system of governance, (5) measure ecological, economic, social and cultural sustainability, (6) assess sustainability dimensions and governance, and finally (7) make comparisons and synthesize. Collaboration, communication and dissemination are additional core features. We discuss barriers bridges and bridges for applying this approach.  相似文献
